Softball Preview: Blue Devils host River Falls Tuesday, close home season Friday with Pointers on Senior Day

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (5-22, 0-12 WIAC) will wrap up regular season play this week when they host UW-River Falls (10-14, 5-7 WIAC), Tueday, May 4, at 4 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader, then host UW-Stevens Point (20-13, 6-6 WIAC), Friday, May 7 at 5 p.m. on Senior Night. The Blue Devils will recognize graduating seniors Michala Belter, Melea Bruns, Jessica Christiansen, Meghan Kelly and Sommer Kunstmann.

THE 2021 WIAC SCHEDULE:  Teams will play their usual 14-game regular-season league schedule, while the conference tournament has been expanded to eight teams with quarterfinal games between the No. 8 seed/No. 1 seed, No. 7 seed/No. 2 seed, No. 6 seed/No. 3 seed and No. 5 seed/No. 4 seed on May 11. The winning teams will advance to the semifinals on May 13. The quarterfinal and semifinal games will be hosted by the higher seed. The championship will feature the two semifinal winners in a three-game series on May 15 and 16 (if necessary) at the higher seed. The teams will also play several non-conference games among themselves.

PARKING: There is no free parking for weekday baseball & softball games.   Regular parking restrictions are strictly enforced. Parking for baseball and softball spectators during weekday games is restricted to on-street parking and in Lot 29.  Spectators that park in Lot 29 (located just north of the outdoor track) must pay parking fees and register their license plate at the pay station near the main East entrance of the Sports & Fitness Center.  Lot 29 parking restrictions end at 4 pm on Monday through Friday.   DO NOT PARK in Lot 4 during the week. Lot 4 is the parking lot located to the west of the Sports & Fitness Center and north of Don & Nona Williams Stadium (the football stadium). Lot 4 is only open to the general public from 1 p.m. on Fridays until 9 p.m. on Sundays. There is no general parking in Lot 4 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays and not until 1 pm on Fridays. Team buses may park on the east side (outdoor track side - not the metered side) of 3rd Street East. Parking is permitted in all university lots on weekends.


UW-STOUT: Stout carries a large, 25-player roster, led by seniors, first baseman Meghan Kelly, catcher Michala Belter and pitchers Melea Bruns and Sommer Kunstmann. Juniors Jessica Christianson, Korin HallKelly Beck, Maddie Kleinschmidt, Addison MurryKaylee Peterson, and Shannon Jones, sophomores Kayli PfefferKate FunkAllegra LarsonMaggie O'Brien, and Mackensie Wolterstorff, and freshmen Ashley JacobsonKatelyn BelleauTaylor ManclAlyssa AlbrechtJordan CabyLexy KupczakAmanda Shipley and Bella Anderson make up the remainder of the roster. It was 356 days in between games from when the 2020 season was canceled to when the Blue Devils opened with UW-Superior, Feb. 27. Following a 19-18 overall record in 2019, Stout went 3-1 last season before the season came to a premature end after a pair of games March 8, 2020, in Rosemount, Ill. Practices resumed in the fall in a socially-distanced way and, at the beginning, in pods to keep the numbers down on the field. Indoor practice resumed in late January with the entire team working together.  Becky Iaccino begins her sixth season as the Blue Devil head coach. She is assisted by Chris Iliopoulos, Jessica Stine and Sam Hintzman.

AT THE PLATE: Shortstop Shannon Jones leads the Blue Devils at the plate, hitting .329 (26-79) with four doubles, three home runs and 12 RBI. Jones has also stolen three bases.  Outfielder Kaylee Peterson is hitting .314 (22-70) and has four doubles, a triple and eight RBI. . Peterson also has a triple and seven RBI. Outfielder Korin Hall is hitting .293 (17-58) and leads the team in runs scored with 13. First baseman Meghan Kelly (.296, 21-71leads the team in RBI with 15 and has five doubles.  | Statistics

IN THE CIRCLE: Melea Bruns and Sommer Kunstmann have taken on the majority of starts, with Bruns starting 11 and Kunstmann 10 games. Kunstmann has 14 appearances with 54.2 innings pitched and 20 strikeout. Bruns has made 13 appearances with 51.2 innings pitched and 14 strikeouts.  Sophomore Mackensie Wolterstorff and junior Maddie Kleinschmidt have come on in relief roles, but each has made two starts. Wolterstorff is 1-1 and Kleinschmidt is 2-2, while Bruns is 1-10, and Kunstmann 0-7. Kunstmann earned her first save since her freshman year, recording the serve against UW-La Crosse. Wolterorff leads the team in strikeouts with 22. 

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT:  Shannon Jones belted an inside-the-park home run in Game Two at UW-Platteville April 24, but UW-Stout came up just short, 5-3, in the nightcap. The Pioneers won the opening game, 5-1. Trailing 5-0 in the second game, Jones sparked all of Stout's scoring in the contest. With Kelly Beck on second base, Jones smacked the ball over the head of the Pioneer outfielder who dived for the ball in the gusting winds. Before the outfield could recover, Jones had touched all the bases for her second home run of the season.  After the initial outburst by the Pioneers, Stout relief pitcher Maddie Kleinschmidt kept the home team at bay the rest of the way. Jones opened the sixth with a double down the left field line, advanced to third when Kaylee Peterson fouled out, then scored on Meghan Kelly's single up the middle. Jones was 3 for 3 in the game with two runs scored and two RBI. Kleinschmidt pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief ball, scattering four hits, walking one and striking out one. The Pioneers were led by Abby Burns, who went 3 for 4. Rachel Plautz and Danielle Trumbo each drove in a pair of runs. In the opener, Melea Bruns went the distance and held Platteville scoreless unitl the fifth inning when the Pioneers had a five run outburst. Bruns finsihed the game, giving up eight hits. Stout scored a run on Kelly's RBI double to center field in the seventh.  Kayli Pfeffer and Ashley Jacobson each had two hits to lead Stout.  Angela Laabs was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Amanda Stanczuk drove in two runs for the Pioneers.  |  Game Story and Statistics 



SCOUTING UW-RIVER FALLS:  Freshman Johanna Breyen is leading the Falcons at the plate with a healthy .466 (34-73), recording ficw doubles and a triple. Tayler Fall is hitting .410 (16-39) in 14 games played, but has a team-best 12 RBI. Juliana Reynolds is second in the WIAC in strikeouts, tallying 64 over a team-best 81.1 innings pitched. LAST TIME OUT: On yet another nice sunny, spring day, the UW-River Falls Falcons took on the Pointers of UW- Stevens Point for senior day at pristine Faye Perkins Softball Stadium, falling to the Pointers, 10-0, 9-1. | Game Story and Statistics

LAST TIME THEY MET: UW-River Falls pulled out a pair of wins in the late innings over UW-Stout April 15 at Faye Perkins Stadium. The Falcons captured wins of 5-3, 4-3. The Falcons scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth of the first game to break a 3-3 tie, then broke another 3-3 tie with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh of the second game. River Falls holds a 49-28 advantage in the series.  |  Game Story and Stats



SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT: The Pointers are second in the WIAC in stolen bases, tallying 69, with Emma Buerger thieving 12 and Jayden Prondzinski  with 11.  Maddie Candre  tops the Pointers at the plate with an average of .394 with 20 RBI. Buerger also has 20 RBI. Makenna Tkach leads the WIAC in strikeouts with 106, 30 more than any other conference pitcher. LAST TIME OUT: The Pointers are scheduled to be at UW-Oshkosh, Tuesday, May 4. The Pointers had a non-conference doubleheader with UW-River Falls canceled, May1. The Pointers swept the Falcons April 30 in River Falls, 10-0 in five innings, and 9-1. The Pointers stole seven bases to run their season total to a single season school record of 69.  |  Game Story and Stats

LAST TIME THEY MET: The Blue Devils hold a 13-game winning streak over the Pointers and swept Stevens Point, 7-0, 5-2, April 28, 2019, in Menomonie. COACH BECKY IACCINO: Blue Devil coach Becky Iaccino (85-96 Stout / 104-116 overall) is in her sixth year as the head coach of the Blue Devils with the 2021 season. Iaccino played professionally in Italy from 2003 to 2011 and with the Italian National team from 2005-07. She has been the head coach at Marian University where she was selected as conference coach of the year, and has eight years of experience as an assistant coach at Division I and Division III programs.

AWARDS AND HONORS: 2021: Ashley Jacobson was selected as The Heights/UW-Stout Athlete of the Week after helping the. Blue Devils to an 11-8 win over UW-Eau Claire, April 22...Korin Hall was named the WIAC position player of the week and Mackensie Wolterstorff the WIAC pitcher of the week after a season-opening sweep of UW-Superior, Feb. 27.

ON DECK: The Blue Devils will head into the WIAC Championship, presented by Culver's, Tuesday, May 11. The tournament continues Thursday, May 13 and wraps up with championship day, Saturday, May 15.
