PLATTEVILLE (April 24, 2021) -
Shannon Jones belted an inside-the-park home run in Game Two at UW-Platteville Saturday, but UW-Stout came up just short, 5-3, in the nightcap. The Pioneers won the opening game, 5-1.
Trailing 5-0 in the second game, Jones sparked all of Stout's scoring in the contest. With
Kelly Beck on second base, Jones smacked the ball over the head of the Pioneer outfielder who dived for the ball in the gusting winds. Before the outfield could recover, Jones had touched all the bases for her second home run of the season.
After the initial outburst by the Pioneers, Stout relief pitcher Maddie Kleinschmidt kept the home team at bay the rest of the way. Jones opened the sixth with a double down the left field line, advanced to third when
Kaylee Peterson fouled out, then scored on
Meghan Kelly's single up the middle.
Jones was 3 for 3 in the game with two runs scored and two RBI. Kleinschmidt pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief ball, scattering four hits, walking one and striking out one. The Pioneers were led by Abby Burns, who went 3 for 4. Rachel Plautz and Danielle Trumbo each drove in a pair of runs.
