Softball adds doubleheader to schedule, will play Bethel this Friday

Watch | Live Stats

MENOMONIE (March 4, 2021) - The UW-Stout softball team added a doubleheader to their schedule and the turnaround will be quick. Stout will face Bethel University, Friday, March 5 with the first game scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. and the second game at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the Augsburg University Dome.

No spectators are allowed, but Augsburg University will be providing a live video stream and live stats.

The Blue Devils are 2-0 after sweeping UW-Superior, 8-6, 7-6, last weekend at the Bethany Lutheran College Tournament.

For Bethel, it will be their season-opener. Bethel was able to get eight games played last season before the season was called due to the pandemic. Bethel was on their spring break trip when the plug was pulled. They last played March 14, 2020, and were 6-2 at that point. Stout played four games last season and were 3-1.

Stout and Bethel have met on the softball field 10 times, with Stout holding a 7-3 advantage. Stout has won the last two meetings, including a 13-4, five-inning win, March 15, 2018 in Florida. None of Stout's current players played in that game, although seniors Meghan Kelly, Melea Bruns and Sommer Kunstmann were freshman on the roster.

Outfielder Korin Hall had a hot bat and speedy feet last last weekend, going 7 of 9 from the plate, scoring seven runs and stealing two bases, including home on a double steal. Hall earned WIAC/Kwik Trip Position Player of the Week honors.  Kelly Beck was 4 for 6 with two runs scored; Meghan Kelly was 4 for 6 with a double and four RBI and Shannon Jones was 3 for eight with a double and an RBI. Taylor Mancl, Ashley Jacobson, Kaylee Peterson and Kayli Pfeffer each had two hits.

Relief pitchers Maddie Kleinschmidt and Mackensie Wolterstorff picked up the wins last week. Kleinschmidt came on in the first game with the score tied and gave up no earned runs to forge the win. Wolterstorff, a sophomore who saw only three innings of work during last year's abbreviated schedule, went four innings, striking out eight, allowing no runs or walks, to earn conference pitcher of the week honors.
