THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION: The Blue Devils will close the home portion of their schedule by hosting Hamline University, Saturday, March 20 at in Johnson Fieldhouse. Introductions start at 4:30 p.m. with competition set to begin at 5 p.m.
THIS SEASON: The COVID-19 pandemic forced all sports to rethink their schedule and WIAC gymnastics will have four meets beginning in late February and ending in early April. The Blue Devils will open at Gustavus Adolphus College, Friday, Feb. 26, then host a pair of meets - UW-Whitewater, Saturday, March 13 at 4 p.m. and Hamline University, Saturday, March 20 at 5 p.m. - before closing out the season Thursday, April 1 at UW-Eau Claire at 5 p.m. Spectators will not be allowed during the 2021 season. The WIAC Championship has been canceled, as has the NCGA Championship for the second consecutive year. None of the teams in the NCGA's East Regional were conducting competitive seasons this winter.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
- The Blue Devils finished fourth at the 2020 WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional.
- Stout won their first ever WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional title in 2019 and finished second at the 2019 NCGA Championship, their best-ever finish.
- Four Blue Devils earned NCGA All-America awards for the 2020 season - Shadae Boone, Brooke Terry, Britney Wolfe and Belle Ihde.
- The Blue Devils have four seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and five freshmen on their 2021 roster.

UW-STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
- UW-Stout's Shadae Boone won two events as UW-Stout fell 187.825-184.425 to UW-Whitewater at Johnson Fieldhouse March 13. The Blue Devil senior captured the vault with a score of 9.750 and took the floor exercise with a 9.650. Boone finished fifth on the uneven bars with a 9.150. Olivia Rosenow was second on the uneven bars (9.325). As a team, the young Blue Devils added more than three points from their first outing of the season two weeks ago. Stout scored 181.875 in the opener. Stout had freshmen in 12 varsity spots tonight. The floor exercise crew increased their team score by more than two points from the season opener, finishing with a score of 47.150. Freshman Kiara Bruening finished third in the all-around with a personal-best score of 37.250. She also scored a personal-best on the floor exercise (9.50) with a fourth place finish. Kiara Brown had her top collegiate score on the uneven bars, where she finished fourth with a 9.175. All told, the Blue Devils recorded nine personal-bests. Carlie Beatty had a personal-best 9.325 on the vault, while Genevieve Czaplewski recorded personal bests on the uneven bars (8.525) , the balance beam (9.450) and the floor exercise (9.150). HAMLINE LAST TIME OUT: Hamline University gymnastics team put up a solid performance on Friday night, defeating Gustavus 179.050 to 177.325 in St. Peter. The Pipers had individuals win each of the four events, with sophomore Madeline Sowinski winning on the floor and the beam and junior Nikki Johnsen winning the vault and tying for first on the bars. This was Hamline's third win over Gustavus in the past four years. Last season, HU recorded a decisive 185.450-180.650 win at Walker Field House. As a team, HU tallied their best score on vault with 46.325 points, coming in ahead of Gustavus, who scored 46.150 points. Johnsen scored a career-best 9.525 to win the event and sophomore Tisana Lowe was not too far behind with a 9.425, which was good for second place. Junior Emily Anderson also ended up in the top-five with a 9.250 to tie for fifth. The Pipers had a strong showing on beam as well, outscoring the Gusties 45.025 to 42.325. Hamline had four within the top five in the standings. Sowinski won it with a 9.525 and junior Katie Kalland tied for second with a 9.250. Johnsen came in fourth with a 9.200 and Anderson placed fifth with 8.625. On floor, Gustavus had the better performance, scoring 45.650 points to Hamline's 44.600, but the Pipers still had three finishers in the top five. Sowinski won the event with a 9.525, senior Mary Kelly placed fourth with a 9.150 and sophomore Bailee Davis took fifth with a 9.125. The uneven bars was particularly close between the two teams, as GAC scored 43.200 points and HU had 43.100. Johnsen's 9.075 tied for first place. Next in for the Pipers was sophomore Danielle Jaworski who took fourth with an 8.700 and Sowinski rounded out the top three for Hamline with an 8.525 which was good for sixth. |

WIAC HONOR ROLL: UW-Stout's
Shadae Boone tops the WIAC Honor Roll on both the vault (9.750) and the floor exercise (9.650).
Olivia Rosenow is 10th on the uneven bars (9.350).
Kiara Bruening is fifth on the vault (9.550), eighth on the floor (9.500), 11th on the beam and fourth in the all-around (37.250).
Carlie Beatty is 10th on the beam (9.500).
Genevieve Czaplewski is 11th on the beam (9.450). Hamline's Madeline Sowinski is fifth on the floor exercise (9.525) and Nikki Johnsen is eighth on the vault (9.525).

AWARDS AND HONORS: 2021: Shadae Boone was selected as the WIAC/Kwik Trip Specialist of the Week and the The Heights/UW-Stout Athlete of the Week after winning two events in a dual with UW-Whitewater.
UW-STOUT COACH BECKY BEAULIEU:
- Becky Beaulieu is in her 16th season in 2021 as the Blue Devil coach.
- Under Beaulieu's direction, UW-Stout gymnasts have earned 57 All-American awards and Beaulieu has coached national champions on the balance beam in 2008, the floor exercise in 2009, the uneven bars in 2010, the vault and floor exercise in 2011, the floor in 2015 and the vault in 2019. The 2019 team won the WIAC/NCGA Midwest Championship and finished second at the NCGA Championship.
- A UW-Stout gymnast has qualified and competed at the NCAA Division I regionals in 2009 at the University of Iowa, in 2010 at the University of Utah and in 2018 at the University of Minnesota.
- Beaulieu, competing as Becky McDonnell at UW-La Crosse from 1997-2001, captured back-to-back NCGA floor exercise titles in 1998 and 1999. She established a since-eclipsed school floor exercise record score of 9.8. A seven-time NCGA All-American, she also garnered all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors nine times. The Eagles, for which she was a two-year captain, won two NCGA titles during her competing days.
- Beaulieu has been named the WIAC Coach of Year three times - 2011, 2015 and 2019. She was the NCGA West Region Coach of the Year
- In 2012, Beaulieau was selected to the WIAC All-Time Gymnastics Team as the conference celebrated their 100th anniversary.
- Beaulieu was inducted into the UW-La Crosse Wall of Fame in 2016.
- Kj Wheeler joined the Blue Devil coaching staff in 2019, but joined the staff full-time for the 2020-21 school year.
WIAC AND NCGA: The
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) is made up of eight schools - UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stout, UW-Whitewater, Hamline University, Gustavus Adolphus College and Winona State University. These eight schools make up the NCGA West Region and are also members of the 14-school
National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA). The six East schools are: SUNY-Brockport, SUNY-Cortland, Ithaca (NY) College, Springfield (Mass) College, Rhode Island College, and Ursinus (Pa) College. Each region holds their own regional meet to determine which teams and individuals will advance to the NCGA Championship. The championship is alternated yearly between the East and the West, with the West hosting the event generally during the odd numbered years. All of the schools in the east did not compete in spring 2021.
DOWN THE ROAD: The Blue Devils take a week off and will close the 2021 season when they travel to UW-Eau Claire, Thursday, April 1 at 5 p.m.
