Hockey Preview: Northland College up this week

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (1-1-0, 1-1-0 WIAC) opened the season with a 5-1 win over UW-River Falls, giving coach Mike MacDonald his first collegiate win. But the Falcons returned the favorite the next time out by handing the Blue Devils a 4-1 loss. Stout will take on Northland College (0-2-0. 0-2-0 WIAC) this week, hosting the Lumberjacks Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m., then traveling to Ashland to face the 'Jacks, Friday, Feb. 12, on their home ice. Northland was swept by UW-Superior last weekend, 5-2, 7-1. 

THIS SEASON: The COVID-19 pandemic forced all sports to rethink their schedule and WIAC hockey will have 10 games, which will only be against conference opponents, plus a conference tournament. The teams will meet twice during the shortened regular season, all in the same week with games on Wednesdays and Fridays. The conference tournament is scheduled to be held the second week of March, with the first round Monday, March 8, the second round Wednesday, March 10 and the championship game Friday, March 12. All tournament games will be played at the high seed. The top two seeded teams will get a first round bye. There are six teams in the WIAC for men's hockey - UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Stout, UW-Superior and Northland College. Fans will not be allowed during the 2020-21 season.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS:

  • Logan Nelson scored a pair of goals and added an assist in Stout's first game of the season. Raphael Gosselin had a goal and a pair of assists against River Falls in the season-opener. 
  • Matt Dahlseide scored his first collegiate goal against UW-River Falls in the opener, and added an assist. Keegan Bauman also scored his first collegiate goal in the opening game of the season. 
  • Sophomore Alex Stuckert scored his first collegiate goal, getting the marker as Stout's only goal against UW-River Falls in the second game of the season.
  • Also recording assists last week were: Mike Butcher, Noah Carson, Brandon Connett, Kobe Keller, Alex Nagel, Joey Petronack, Alec Skar and Peter Verstegen.
  • Zack Cloutier worked both games last week, going 1-1. Cloutier has allowed four goals and turned away 50 shots for a saves percentage of .926 and a goals against average of 2.04. 
  • The Blue Devils have four seniors, eight juniors, 11 sophomores and nine freshmen on their roster.
 

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS LAST SEASON:

  • Raphael Gosselin, Evan Butcher and Konnar Dechaine are the returning Blue Devils' scoring leaders, with Butcher leading the way with 18 points on four goals and a team-best 14 assists. Gosselin finished with four power play goals and Dechaine had three power play goals. Goesselin had eight total goals and nine assists. Dechaine finished the 2019-20 season with eight goals and seven assists. Logan Nelson finished with a team-best 10 goals and dished off four assists.  Alex Nagel finished with nine assists, along with four goals. Freshman Vladislav Sorokin has six goals, two on the power play for the season, and has two assists. Alex Bowe had three goals and six assists. 
  • Freshman goalie Brennan Kitchen, who earned all-conference honorable mention honors, started 16 games and worked 1016 minutes between the pipes. For the season, Kitchen has a save percentage of .904 with a GAA of 3.13. He has a record of 7-10-1. 
  • Kitchen had 55 saves in a shutout win over Northland College and the 55 saves were the most saves since Corey Koop recorded more than 50 saves twice during the 2013-14 season. Koop had 51 saves against UW-Eau Claire, Feb. 20 2014, and 59 saves against UW-Stevens Point, Dec. 7, 2013. The shutout over Northland College was Stout's first since the Blue Devils blanked Marian University, 3-0, Nov. 17, 2018.  
  • The Blue Devils averaged 2.5 goals per contest and gave up 3.8 goals. 
  • Brady Meyers has played 282 minutes and recorded 134 saves. 
  • The Blue Devils scored 14 power play goals against 86 opportunities (16.3 percent).
  • The Blue Devils allowed 13 power plays goal against 87 opportunities (85.1 percent). The Blue Devils were 20th nationally in penalty kill last season.

  • Stout is currently 1-4 on the power play (.250) and 2-10 on penalty kill (.800). 


BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT

  • The Blue Devils (1-1-0, 1-1-0 WIAC) opened the season with a 5-1 win over UW-River Falls, Feb. 3, giving coach Mike MacDonald his first collegiate win. But the Falcons returned the favorite the next time out by handing the Blue Devils a 4-1 loss, Feb. 5, in River Falls.
  • For the first time in 347 days, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, UW-Stout took the ice seeking to get new Blue Devils' head coach, Mike MacDonald first win. With 31 shots on net for the Blue Devils and two goals by Logan Nelson, Stout got their first WIAC win of the year against the Falcons, 5-1. In the first period, the Blue Devils and UW-River Falls came out on all cylinders, but for the first five minutes of the game, shots were in favor of Stout, 6-1. At 6:01 of the game, Logan Nelson beat the Falcon's Skinner to score the first goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Matt Dahlseide and Alex Stuckert. The Blue Devils had another chance when they skated one man up as they went on a power play. But the Falcons penalty kill killed off the penalty. With 10 minutes left in the period, the Falcons would skate on a power play, but the Blue Devils held off and both teams were skating full strength. At 14:36 of the period, Matt Dahlseide made the score 2-0 for the Blue Devils when he got a goal assisted by Alec Skar and Logan Nelson. It is Dahlseide's first collegiate goal. In the second period, it didn't take long for River Falls to get back within one goal. Only 1:24 in the period, Falcons' Christian Hausinger scored a power play goal on an assist from Vilho Saariluoma. But the Blue Devils wanted to make it a two score game again. At 10:40 in the period, the Blue Devils went on a power play and Keegan Bauman scored his first collegiate goal to make the game 3-1. Assists were from Raphael Gosselin and Joey Petronack. In the third period, the Blue Devils notched two more goals. The first goal coming at 6:32 in the period as Logan Nelson scored his second goal of the night. Nelson's goal was assisted by Mikey Butcher and Landon Lushanko.  The fifth goal of the night for the Blue Devils came at 12:14 of the period as Raphael Gosselin scored from the slot. Assists on the goal were from Joey Petronack and Kobe Keller. The final score of the first game for both teams was 5-1 with the Blue Devils coming out on top.  Shots ended with Stout leading 31-15. Zack Cloutier ends his night with 14 saves and his first collegiate win.   • UW-River Falls scored three unanswered goals over the final two periods to hand UW-Stout their first loss of the season, a 4-1 decision at Hunt Arena Friday. The teams played to a 1-1 tie after the first period, with the Falcons scoring the opening goal, by Peter Grytdahl at the 8:45 mark. The Blue Devils'  Alex Stuckert answered back just over two minutes later, gaining assists by Alex Nagel and Peter Verstegen.  The Falcons took the lead back five minutes into the second period on a goal by Joel Frazee. Christian Hausinger scored on the power play four minutes into the fourth period and Noah Roofe scored an empty net, shorthanded goal with just over a minute remaining to close out the scoring. Zack Cloutier, who had earned his first collegiate win the night before in a 5-1 win, picked up his first collegiate loss, turning away 35 shots. SCOUTING NORTHLAND COLLEGE

  • The Lumberjacks joined the WIAC last season and finished with a 4-22-1 overall record, 1-14-0 in the WIAC, with their lone win coming against conference power UW-Stevens Point, a 3-2 win in Ashland in Dec. 2019.
  • The Lumberjacks lost their four leading scorers, with Cameron Coutre and Cole Woodliffe returning as the Lumberjacks' leading scorers.  Coutre last year scored four goals and four assists, while Woodliffe had three goals and four assists. 
  • After just two game, Zach Ross has a goal and an assist, while Cole Woodliffe has wo assists. Cameron Coutre and Josh King each have a goal and Cole Kirkup has an assist.
  • The Lumberjacks are looking to replace goalie Gennaro Anzevino, who worked 16 games last season and 44 over his career. Taylor Unruh worked 11 games last season, but has yet to see action this season. Freshman Viktor Wennberg and Chris Curr have seen action this year, with Wennberg recroding 34 saves and five goals allowed (5.45 GAA) and Curr 56 saves with seven goals allowed (6.47 GAA). 
  • Cole Woodliffe will serve as team captain while Marshall Nikitin, Connor Evans and Tristan Petrie will serve as assistant captains for the Lumberjacks. Woodliffe, who was an assistant captain as a sophomore last season, has played in 46 games, registering 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points. Nikitin, a forward who's season was cut short due to an injury last year, has suited up in 32 games, scoring one goal and adding three assists. Evans has played in 53 career games, collecting 11 assists. Petrie played in 26 game and had five assists season during his freshman year.

THE LUMBERJACKS LAST TIME OUT
  • Northland was swept by UW-Superior last weekend, 5-2, 7-1.   
  • The Northland College LumberJacks 2021 season officially got underway Wednesday when they played host to the UW-Superior YellowJackets.  The Jacks led after the first period but they were unable to hold on as the YellowJackets left Ashland with a 5-2 win to start the WIAC regular season.  Zach Ross found the back of the net for the Jacks at the 12:54 mark of the first period.  After a scramble in front of the YellowJackets net, the puck made its way out to Ross who hammered a slapshot from just inside the blue line which opened the scoring. The Yellowjackets responded with five unanswered goals over the next two periods before the Jacks Kenny Styles found the back of the net to make the score 5-2. Freshman goaltender Chris Curr made 53 saves in net for the Jacks  |  Game One Story and Stats
  • In the rematch at Superior, Feb. 5, the Yellowjackets jumped out to a 3-0 in the first first period before the Lumberjacks scored what would prove to be their only goal of the game in a 7-1 decision. Northland's Cameron Coutre scored a shorthanded goal with just over six minutes left in the first stanza, getting an assist from Cole Woodliffe. WHEN STOUT AND NORTHLAND MET LAST SEASON

  • The Blue Devils swept the three-game series last year, taking a 6-5 win, Nov. 22, 2019, then grabbing January wins, 7-2, Jan. 23 and 4-0 Jan. 25 at Northland.
  • In the opener in Menomonie, Northland scored three of the first four goals to take a 3-1 lead before Stout came back to tie the game with three consecutive goals by Hunter Anderson, Alex Bowe and Landon Lushanko. The 'Jacks answered back on a Daniel Chartrand goal to take the lead in the third period.   • In a game that saw five goals in the first period, Stout jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Alex Bowe, Alec Skar and Adam Kresl, only to see Northland pull to within one goal in the first period on goals by Kurt Sonne and Kyle Pouncy. Stout scored three times in the second period with goals by Alex Nagel, Logan Nelson and a power play goal by Raphael Gosselin to take control back.   • Two nights later, freshman goalie Brennan Kitchen recorded his first collegiate and the team's first shutout of the season. But Northland made Kitchen work when he had to stop all 55 shots thrown his way. Logan Nelson scored twice for Stout, scoring both midway through the first and midway through the second period. USCHO.com TOP 15 DIVISION III POLL: The Blue Devils received votes in the 2018-19 USCHO.com poll starting Nov. 18, but dropped out in mid-December. They returned to the "Receiving Votes" category with 10 in the Jan. 7 poll, but dropped out after back-to-back losses to UW-Eau Claire and UW-Superior and have not returned. HONORS AND AWARDS

  • 2019-20: Goalie Brennan Kitchen, defenseman Connor Chambers and forward Logan Nelson earned WIAC honorable mention honors. Lucas Carroll was selected to the all-sportsmanship team...Brennan Kitchen was selected as the WIAC hockey athlete of the week after stopping 55 shots in a 4-0 shutout over Northland College, Jan. 25. On the weekend, Kitchen had 88 total saves...After scoring three goals and an assist over the weekend against Bethel University and Hamline University, Konnar Dechaine was selected as the UW-Stout athlete of the week, Jan. 13…After scoring two goals each night in a loss to UW-Stevens Point and a win over UW-Superior, Logan Nelson was selected as the WIAC Athlete of the Week.



UW-STOUT COACH MIKE MACDONALD

  • The 2020-21 season marks Mike MacDonald's (1-1-0, 1-1-0) first season as the Blue Devils' head coach. 
  • Before coming to Stout, MacDonald coached four seasons at Curry College, near Boston, Mass. Prior to joining Curry, he spent a year as an assistant coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. 
  • MacDonald graduated from the SUNY Geneseo with a degree in Business Administration in 2007. During his time at Geneseo, the team posted a record of 67-33-11, winning the SUNYAC Championship in 2005 and 2006. Over his collegiate career, MacDonald appeared in 109 games and is among the school's all-time leaders in goals (61) and points (120).
  • MacDonald played six seasons professionally. He began his professional career in the Central Hockey League, spending one season each with the Odessa Jackalopes and New Mexico Scorpions. The following four seasons he played primarily for the Southern Professional Hockey League's Huntsville Havoc. While there he served as the team's captain for three seasons. In 2010 he scored the game-winning goal to give Huntsville its first ever SPHL Championship. Over his career, MacDonald appeared in 338 professional games with 213 points on 84 goals and 129 assists.
  • MacDonald is a native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

NORTHLAND COLLEGE'S SEAMUS GREGORY

  • Seamus Gregory (51-117-16, overall; 46-96-15, at Northland) is entering his his seventh season at the helm Northland, Gregory and his staff have completely revamped the Jack lineup with the current roster complied of 26 underclassmen. In Gregory's second season (2015-16) behind the Jack bench, he led the program to their third-best ever season in their 19 year history of collegiate hockey. Prior to Northland, Gregory spent three seasons (2011-2014) at Williston State College in northwest North Dakota, where he was the architect of Teton Hockey. Gregory was the first ever coach Williston State Hockey history. In a short three years at Williston State, Gregory led the program to a record of 44-36-4 with three Region XIII titles, twelve All-Americans, three NJCAA Frozen Fours and two National Championships (2013, 2014). The two titles are the first and only National Championships in any sport in school history. This is a return to the NCAA and NCHA (Northern Collegiate Hockey Association) for Gregory who spent three years (2008-2011) at Lake Forest College. (2008-20110) as the first assistant/recruiting coordinator under 32 year mid-west Division III Hockey Coach Tony Fritz. Gregory also spent one year as the interim Head Coach (2010-2011) upon Fritz's retirement from the game in July of 2010.



THE CONFERENCE:


LENDING AN ASSIST: Goalie Evan Bisek recorded an assist against Marian University, Nov. 2, 2019...Two different Stout goalies earned assists during the 2015-16 season. Spencer Viele was awarded an assist Nov. 6 against Bethel University, then added a second assist Jan. 29 at UW-Superior and Chase Hollander earned an assist Nov. 21, 2015, against Concordia. The three helpers mark the first time two UW-Stout goalies have gotten an assist in the same year since the team returned to varsity status 20 years ago...When Spencer Viele was awarded an assist against Bethel University, Nov. 6, 2015, he was not the first Stout goalie, and won't be the last, to get an assist. Since the Blue Devil hockey program returned to varsity play during the 1996-97 season, seven goalies have earned at least one assist. Chase Hollander was awarded an assist for his pass as Danny Ray scored against UW-Superior, Jan. 17, 2015. Corey Koop did it during the 2013-14 season, Jeff Stone during the 2008-09 season, and Jake Schuman during the 2004-05 season each recorded an assist. Jeff Dotson did it in 2000-01 as a freshman, then did it again as a senior in 2003-04. Kelly Elde did it twice during the 1996-97 season.

STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com poll Nov. 19, 2018 and received a single vote in the Dec. 3 rankings before dropping out...the last time the Blue Devils were mentioned was with one vote in the Oct. 31, 2016 poll...The last time Stout was mentioned was Jan. 18, 2016...The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com Division III poll, Jan. 18, 2016, after nearly a four year hiatus, receiving five votes. A tie and two straight losses the following week dropped the Blue Devils out of the poll. Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. Stout was in the 2011-12 USCHO.com poll early in the season, dropped out, returned again, but dropped out. Stout returned to the poll after a win over top-ranked St. Norbert, Jan. 18, 2012, garnering eight votes in the Jan. 21, 2012, poll, effectively ranking the Blue Devils 19th. HOME ICE: The Dunn County Board in 2015 approved renaming the Dunn County Ice Arena the Fanetti Community Center in recognition of Marilyn Fanetti's contribution to fundraising efforts undertaken by the Menomonie Youth Hockey Association to remodel and add to the arena at the Dunn County Recreation Park. Fanetti donated $370,000 to the project and asked that the hockey arena and new community room be named for her family.
