MENOMONIE (February 3, 2021) - For the first time in 347 days, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, UW-Stout (1-0-0, 1-0-0 WIAC) took the ice seeking to get new Blue Devils' head coach,
Mike MacDonald first win. With 31 shots on net for the Blue Devils and two goals by
Logan Nelson, Stout got their first WIAC win of the year against the Falcons, 5-1.
In the first period, the Blue Devils and UW-River Falls (0-1-0, 0-1-0) came out on all cylinders, but for the first five minutes of the game, shots were in favor of Stout, 6-1.
At 6:01 of the game,
Logan Nelson beat the Falcon's Skinner to score the first goal of the season. The goal was assisted by
Matt Dahlseide and
Alex Stuckert.
The Blue Devils had another chance when they skated one man up as they went on a power play. But the Falcons penalty kill killed off the penalty.
With 10 minutes left in the period, the Falcons would skate on a power play, but the Blue Devils held off and both teams were skating full strength.
At 14:36 of the period,
Matt Dahlseide made the score 2-0 for the Blue Devils when he got a goal assisted by
Alec Skar and
Logan Nelson. It is Dahlseide's first collegiate goal.
Shots in the period were in favor of the Blue Devils, 15-5.
In the second period, it didn't take long for River Falls to get back within one goal. Only 1:24 in the period, Falcons' Christian Hausinger scored a power play goal on an assist from Vilho Saariluoma.
But the Blue Devils wanted to make it a two score game again. At 10:40 in the period, the Blue Devils went on a power play and
Keegan Bauman scored his first collegiate goal to make the game 3-1. Assists were from
Raphael Gosselin and
Joey Petronack.
At the end of the second period, the Blue Devils were leading the shots at 22-12.
In the third period, the Blue Devils notched two more goals. The first goal coming at 6:32 in the period as
Logan Nelson scored his second goal of the night. Nelson's goal was assisted by
Mikey Butcher and
Landon Lushanko.
The fifth goal of the night for the Blue Devils came at 12:14 of the period as
Raphael Gosselin scored from the slot. Assists on the goal were from
Joey Petronack and
Kobe Keller. The final score of the first game for both teams was 5-1 with the Blue Devils coming out on top.
Shots ended with Stout leading 31-15.
Zack Cloutier ends his night with 14 saves and his first collegiate win. Dysen Skinner takes the loss, but records 26 saves.
Next up for the Blue Devils is another contest with UW-River Falls on Friday, February 5. The game will be played at UW-River Falls at 7:00 p.m.
