Soccer Preview: Stout closes out home season with Senior Night Wednesday

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (9-6-1, 1-3-0 WIAC) will close the home portion of the schedule when they host UW-River Falls (5-8-2, 0-3-1 WIAC), Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m., then will travel to UW-Whitewater (10-4-0, 3-1-0 WIAC), Saturday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.   Wednesday's game is the final regular season home game of the year. Stout was ranked eighth in the Oct. 12 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Region IX rankings. Tonight is Senior Night and the Blue Devils will honor Caylee Boone, Lexie Wescott, Mekenzie Bisel and Megan Richardson

PARKING: Parking on the UW-Stout campus is restricted during the business week. For games at Nelson Field during the week, please plan to park in Lot 29, which is located adjacent to Nelson Field. Do not park in Lot 4, which is a reserved lot for students that live in the residence halls.

PETS: While service animals are welcome, no pets are allowed at UW-Stout athletic events.

A LOOK AT THE 2021 BLUE DEVILS: After a strong start to the season, the Blue Devils have fallen on harder times in October and are looking to break a three-game conference skid. Marissa Steele leads the team in scoring with four goals and seven assists for 11 points. Steele's seven assists leads the WIAC. Freshman Lexi Boyd leads the team in goals with six, eighth in the WIAC. Fellow freshman Liv Winkler is second on the team in goals with five and Winkler has one assist. Carly Kauffman, Remy Soulak and Lauren Chukel each have two goals. Soulak and Kauffman each have three assists, as does senior Caylee Boone. In goal, Haley Vokaty has started the last 14 games and has posted a 7-6-1 record with a 1.16 goals against average and 48 saves. Vokaty has recorded four shutouts.   | 2021 Statistics


THE BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT: Stout lost two conference games, a 2-1 loss at UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 13 and a home loss to UW-La Crosse, 3-1, Oct. 16. Against the Blugolds, UW-Stout scored quickly to take the lead over UW-Eau Claire, but the Blugolds came back to score two goal to give the Blue Devils a 2-1 loss Oct. 13 at Simpson Field. The Blue Devils' Lexi Boyd scored a team-best sixth goal in the eighth minute of the game, with an assist from Marissa Steele.  But the Blugolds knotted the score when Emma Stange scored in the 16th minute, then took the lead in the 26th minute on a goal by Anna Kautzman. Kautzman was awarded a penalty kick, where Stout goalkeeper  Haley Vokaty batted the shot away, but Kautzman popped the rebound into the upper left corner.  La Crosse's Ainsley Allan scored two unassisted goals – the first goal of the game and the last goal of the game – and the Eagles defeated UW-Stout 3-1 Oct. 16 at Nelson Field. Allan scored in the 27th minute when she played a rebound off the UW-Stout goalie, the added the Eagles final goal of the game in the 61st minute. In between, Stout tied the game when Lauren Chukel rolled a shot off the Eagles' goalie's outstretched fingers in the 42nd minute, with an assist by Lizzie Leitzen. REGIONAL RANKINGS: The Blue Devils were ranked eighth in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Region IX Oct. 12 poll. | USC Regional Poll


A LOOK AT UW-RIVER FALLS:  The Falcons are looking for their first conference win of the season. The Falcons have lost three of their last four games contested and tied 2-2 with UW-Platteville. Madyson Shew is second in the WIAC in goals, popping 10 and two assists for 22 points. As a team, the Falcons are tied for third in most goals scored this season with 32 overall. Alexis Peterson has eight goals and five assists for 21 points.  Kassidy Mackie has five goals and two assists. Alayna Westerman is tied for the team lead in assists with five, to go along with her one goal. Amber Krohn has four assists. In net, Kaylie Krueger has the lion's share of minutes, starting 12 games and playing nearly 1100 minutes. Krueger has a goals against average of 1.17 and a saves percentage of .823.   |  Season Statistics

THE FALCONS LAST TIME OUT:  River Falls lost 3-0 at UW-Stevens Point Oct. 16. The home team claimed a one-goal advantage in the first half, scoring just under 11 minutes in and taking a 1-0 lead into the break. After the first 45 minutes, UWSP held a 15-3 shot advantage and had eight corner kick opportunities. The Pointers' Kati Friedrich scored her second goal of the game at the 63rd minute to put UWSP up 2-0, followed by another Pointer goal near the end of regulation to seal the 3-0 victory. UWRF put together a stronger offensive output in the second half, tallying nine shots with three corner kicks, but were unable to push anything past Pointer netminder Miranda Nieman. Falcon goalkeeper Kaylie Krueger made eight saves in goal while suffering the loss. Aliviah McClinton led UWRF with two shots on goal. | Game Story and Stats

THE LAST TIME RIVER FALLS AND STOUT MET: In a highly defensive game, UW-River Falls scored the only goal of the game with 10 seconds remaining to lift the Falcons to a 1-0 win Oct. 9, 2019, at Ramer Field The Falcons' Mariah Trojes broke through the Stout defense as the final countdown began, taking a pass from Maggie Koehler to set up the goal. The teams went at each other in the first half, with neither team cracking the plane of the net. Each team put three shots on frame in the first half.  Both teams came out shooting in the second half. The Falcons put a shot on net three minutes into the half, which the Blue Devils' Claudia Anderson swallowed up. Over a five minute stretch early in the half, Stout put three shots on frame that were stopped by the Falcons' Haley Crosby. Rachel Washington sparked a good deal of Stout's attack, getting off five shots, four on frame, including a shot in the final four minutes of the game. Marissa Steel recorded two shots, one on goal, before leaving the game. The Blue Devils were playing with only four field players on the bench. A LOOK AT UW-WHITEWATER:  Whitewater is the defending conference champion and went three games into the NCAA tournament in 2019. The Warhawks are currently in third place and have UW-Oshkosh, Stout and UW-La Crosse left to play. Anna Brodjian leads the league in scoring with 11 goals, a mark that puts her in the top 40 in the NCAA Division III. Brodjian also has one assist. Olivia May has six goals and three assists. Leah Eisenbarth has started nine games in net and has a GAA of 1.07. Lily Horne has started three games and has yet to give up a goal. Emma Haeger has appeared in four games and has a 1.56 GAA, while Drew Antcliff has appeared in three games and has not allowed a goal.  |  Season Statistics

THE WARHAWKS LAST TIME OUT: The Warhawks will host UW-Oshkosh, Wednesday, Oct. 20. The Warhawks' Elizabeth Klein scored in the 14th minute to lift Whitewater to a 1-0 win over UW-Eau Claire, Oct. 16. The Blugolds tested goalie Lily Horne, who finished with 11 saves in the match, tallied her final save in the 79th minute to keep UW-Eau Claire off the board for the Warhawks' fifth shutout in their last six results. | Game Story and Stats

THE LAST TIME WHITEWATER AND STOUT MET: Whitewater scored twice in each half and took a 4-0 win over UW-Stout Oct. 26, 2019, at a cold and windy Bollinger Fields in Eau Claire. The Warhawks' Elli Wahlberg scored in the 16th minute, Anna Boyd scored in the 33rd minute, Savannah Curtis in the 50th minute and Anna Brodjian in the 89th minute. The Warhawks outshot Stout 34-4 and 17-3 on net. Stout's Claudia Andeson and Erica Seitz each had six saves and the Blue Devils recorded a team save. The Warhawks' Nina Yonan recorded three saves. | Game Story and Stats

THE SERIES: The Warhawks hold a 20-6-2 lead in the series and are 8-1-1 over the last 10 games. The last time Menomonie defeated the Warhawks was a 2-1 win during the 2011 season. The teams tied in Menomonie in 2017.  | History

AWARDS: 2021: Marissa Steele was the WIAC/Kwik Trip athlete of the week and the UW-Stout athlete of the week, Sept. 14, after scoring two game winning goals against St. Scholastica and Cornell College...Liv Winkler was the UW-Stout athlete of the week after scoring a goal in each of the first two games of the season, including the game winner in the season opener against Concordia-Moorhead.


TEAM CAPTAINS: Blue Devil team captains for the 2021 season are Lexie Wescott, Caylee Boone and Marissa Steele.

UW-STOUT COACH RYAN RAUFUS: Coach Ryan Raufus (69-91-20) is in his 11th year as the head coach of the Blue Devils in 2021. Raufus played his college ball at Springfield College in Massachusetts and came to Stout after coaching at La Crosse Logan High School and La Crescent, Minn., High School. 

2019 ROAD WARRIORS: The Blue Devils were road warriors in 2019, with every single game a bus trip tallying more than 3000 bus miles on the season. Four conference games that were originally to be played in Menomonie were moved and Stout played "home" games with UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh and Minnesota-Morris at UW-River Falls, while "home" games with UW-Whitewater and UW-Eau Claire were played in Eau Claire.

TWENTY-FIVE-PLUS YEARS OF BLUE DEVIL SOCCER: After many years as a club sport, UW-Stout became the ninth WIAC team to join the varsity ranks during the 1995 season. The Blue Devils took their lumps to open the season, making their premiere by hosting Augsburg College, Sept. 10, in a 7-0 loss. Stout opened the conference season three days later at Nelson Field, hosting perennial conference powerhouse UW-Stevens Point, dropping a 6-0 decision. The Blue Devils finally broke onto the scoreboard in their third game. While hosting UW-Platteville, Sept. 17, Kari Stapleton scored in the 70th minute on an assist from Jenny Tyson in a 2-1 loss. The Blue Devils would get their first-ever win, a 3-0 decision at Martin Luther College, Sept. 23, collecting goals from Amie Frasier, Tyson and Joann Sognesand. Defender Andrea Schroeder was a second team all-conference selection in 1995, then was selected to the first team in 1996. Members of that first 1995 team include: April Amys, Beeta Bastani, Tammy Beuch, Carrie Blaska, Jen Chapple, Michelle Coon, Amie Frasier, Aimee Grimm, Jamie Jester, Julie Kremer, Dorian Loberg, Amy Lyons, Kristin Manion, Angela McDowell, Andrea Schroeder, Joann Sognesand, Kari Stapleton, Jenny Tyson, Alisa Zimmerman.
