Gymnastics Preview: Blue Devils jump to No. 3, host La Crosse Friday

THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION: After three weeks on the road, the Blue Devils will host their first of two consecutive home matches when they meet UW-La Crosse, Friday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. The Blue Devils are ranked third in the latest NCGA numbers, with La Crosse less than a point back in fourth. Friday is also Short Person Appreciation Day. Anyone shorter than Carlie or Chloe Beatty will not be charged admission.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
  • The Blue Devils moved up one spot to third in the NCGA after their win over UW-Whitewater, scoring an average of 186.533. The Blue Devils have been adding to their team score every week, according to the Road to Nationals website. Stout is currently ranked first on the balance beam (47.183), third on the floor exercise (47.250), third on the vault (47.067) and seventh on the uneven bars (45.033). 
  • Stout won their first ever WIAC Championship/NCGA Midwest Regional title last season and finished second at the NCGA Championship, their best-ever finish. Shadae Boone returns after winning both the NCGA and WIAC vault titles. Brooke Terry returns after winning the WIAC all-around and the balance beam title. Mikala Bugge returns as the defending WIAC champion on the floor exercise. Boone, Terry, Bugge, and Britney Wolfe return after earning NCGA All-America honors.
  • Defending national champion Brockport State is currently first nationally (187.190) in the NCGA, while UW-Oshkosh is second (186.669), UW-Stout third (186.833), UW-La Crosse fourth (185.588), Whitewater fifth (184.744), Springfield College sixth (184.663), Cortland seventh (184.413), Ursinus eighth (184.244), Ithaca College ninth (183.225) and Hamline 10th (182.950). Centenary College is a Division III program, but is not an NCGA member and they are averaging 185.117.  Oshkosh tops the West Region, Stout second, La Crosse third and Whitewater fourth.   • Seven Blue Devils were named to the 2019 NCGA All Championship Team. Shadae Boone was selected for the vault and the floor exercise, Brooke Terry was selected for the balance beam and the vault, Mikala Bugge was selected on the floor exercise and vault, Mallary Dick was selected on the uneven bars, Belle Ihde was selected on the floor exercise and Britney Wolfe was selected on the balance beam.
  • On their roster, Blue Devils have five seniors, six juniors, three sophomores and six freshmen.

UW-STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
  • UW-Stout took individual honors in all four events and increased their team score for the second consecutive week as the Blue Devils defeated UW-Whitewater, 188.800-187.625 Feb. 1. Shadae Boone won the vault (9.750) and Mallary Dick the uneven bars (9.625). Brooke Terry and Carlie Beatty were first and second on the balance beam, scoring 9.675 and 9.550, respectively. Mikala Bugge shared top honors on the floor exercise with a 9.70. Terry captured the all-around with a score of 38.225. The Blue Devils demonstrated strength on the first two events of the afternoon, the uneven bars and vault. The top five scorers for Stout on the uneven bars were the individual's top scores so far this season and the all six performers on the vault posted their top score of the season on the event. As a team, the Blue Devils' posted a season-high 48.025 on the vault and a season-high 46.950 on the even bars. A LOOK AT UW-LA CROSSE: La Crosse captured the 39th Annual Gershon/McLellan Invitational Friday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles, competing in their home opener, finished with a team score of 185.800 while Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) was second at 176.600 and UW-Eau Claire third at 173.250.   La Crosse finished with a score of 46.350 on the vault, 47.400 (season-high) on the uneven parallel bars, 46.225 on the balance beam and 45.825 on the floor exercise. The Eagles' Kacey Mortenson was second in the all-around (35.875) Friday night.  In the individual events, UWL took three titles. The Eagles had the top-four finishers in the vault with Megan Hawkins winning (9.525), Audrey Kaufman second (9.425), Jessica Ahrens third (9.400) and Alex Wood fourth (9.225). UWL took the top-six places on the uneven parallel bars. Kerrie LeGault took the title (9.650) with Mortenson second (9.475), Molly Lyngaas and Brooke Kachinsky tied for third (9.450), Cate Sandvik fifth (9.375) and Madi Vanderpool sixth (9.350). Emma Grant won the floor exercise (9.625) with Olivia Opheim third (9.400) and Jenna Danninger tied for fifth (9.200). The Eagles had had five of the top-six finishers on the balance beam with Ahrens placing second (9.450), Opheim third (9.424), Jordyn Faust fourth (9.200), Mortenson fifth (9.100) and Faith Sersland sixth (9.050). | Game Story and Stats | Statistics

WIAC HONOR ROLL: The WIAC Honor Roll from this season (through Feb. 2) includes the following top-10 scores. The WIAC Honor Roll is determined by the gymnasts' top single score.  Shadae Boone is second on the vault (9.750), Brooke Terry fifth (9.625) and Mikala Bugge seventh (9.575). Mallary Dicks is fifth on the uneven bars (9.625); Brooke Terry is third on the balance beam (9.750) and Britney Wolfe is fourth (9.725); Mikala Bugge is third on the floor exercise (9.750); and Brooke Terry is first in the all-around (38.225). 

For the Eagles, Audry Kaufman is sixth on the vault (9.60), and Jessica Ahrens, Alex Wood and Emma Grant are tied for eighth (9.550). On the uneven bars, Kerrie LeGault is second (9.675), Molly Lyngaas is eighth (9.550) and Kacey Mortenson 10th (9.475). On the balance beam, Jessica Ahrens is second (9.750), Emma Grant is fifth (9.700), and Kacey Mortenson is seventh (9.675). On the floor exercise, Emma Grant is second (9.750) and Faith Sersland is seventh (9.625). Mortenson is fourth in the all-around (37.225) and Grant is seventh (37.125). 
ROAD TO NATIONALS HONOR ROLL: Stout: Shadae Boone is currently ranked second in the vault (9.608) and Belle Ihde is 14th (9.463). Brooke Terry is ranked third in the balance beam (9.603) and fourth in the all-around (37.117). Carlie Beatty is ranked seventh on the beam (9.533) and Britney Wolfe is eighth (9.525). Mikala Bugge is ranked second in the floor exercise (9.683) and Shadae Boone is 13th (9.492). Bugge is ranked 15th on the uneven bars (9.250). The Road to Nationals Honor Roll is determined by an average score. 

LaCrosse: For the Eagles, Kerri Legault is first on the uenven bars (9.606), Molly Lyngaas is foruth (9.50), Cate Sandvich is eighth (9.375) and Brooke Kachinsky is 11th (9.356). on the bault, Megan HAwkins was eighth (9.519) and Audrey Kaufman is 11th (9.506). Emma Grant is 12th on the floor exercise (9.556), Jessica Ahrens is 15th on the beam (9.406). Kacey Mortenson is 10th in the all-around (36.642) and Grant 12th (36.550).

UW-STOUT COACH BECKY BEAULIEU:
  • Becky Beaulieu is in her 15th season in 2020 as the Blue Devil coach.
  • Under Beaulieu's direction, UW-Stout gymnasts have earned 53 All-American awards and Beaulieu has coached national champions on the balance beam in 2008, the floor exercise in 2009, the uneven bars in 2010, the vault and floor exercise in 2011, the floor in 2015 and the vault in 2019. The 2019 team won the WIAC/NCGA Midwest Championship and finished second at the NCGA Championship.
  • A UW-Stout gymnast has qualified and competed at the NCAA Division I regionals in 2009 at the University of Iowa, in 2010 at the University of Utah and in 2018 at the University of Minnesota.
  • Beaulieu, competing as Becky McDonnell at UW-La Crosse from 1997-2001, captured back-to-back NCGA floor exercise titles in 1998 and 1999. She established a since-eclipsed school floor exercise record score of 9.8. A seven-time NCGA All-American, she also garnered all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors nine times. The Eagles, for which she was a two-year captain, won two NCGA titles during her competing days.
  • Beaulieu has been named the WIAC Coach of Year three times - 2011, 2015 and 2019. She was the NCGA West Region Coach of the Year
  • In 2012, Beaulieau was selected to the WIAC All-Time Gymnastics Team as the conference celebrated their 100th anniversary.
  • Beaulieu was inducted into the UW-La Crosse Wall of Fame in 2016.
  • Seth Helland joined the Blue Devil coaching staff in 2019. Helland was the head coach at Brainerd, Minn., High School, before coming to Menomonie.


WIAC AND NCGA: The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) is made up of eight schools - UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stout, UW-Whitewater, Hamline University, Gustavus Adolphus College and Winona State University. These eight schools make up the NCGA West Region and are also members of the 14-school National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA). The six East schools are: SUNY-Brockport, SUNY-Cortland, Ithaca (NY) College, Springfield (Mass) College, Rhode Island College, and Ursinus (Pa) College. Each region holds their own regional meet to determine which teams and individuals will advance to the NCGA Championship. The championship is alternated yearly between the East and the West, with the West hosting the event generally during the odd numbered years.

DOWN THE ROAD: : The Blue Devils will host their second home meet of the season when Gustavus Adolphus College comes to Menomonie, Thursday, Feb. 13 for a 6 p.m. contest.
