A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
- The Blue Devils are led by Jon Ciriacks 16.4 points, a mark that ranks fifth in the WIAC. Ciriack is also averaging 6.1 rebounds, seventh in the league and has stepped out to pop in a team-best 48 3-point shots, averaging 2.18 3-pointers, fifth in the WIAC. Last year, Ciriacks made 31 total 3-point attempts. Ciriacks has scored in double figures in 18 of the team's 22 contests, including the last nine games, and seven times has scored 20 or more points. Ciriacks scored a season-high 35 points earlier this season against Bethany Lutheran.
- Luke Geiger has been part of the inside-outside game for the Blue Devils and is is averaging 13.0 points, 12th in the WIAC. The lanky guard is averaging 4.3 rebounds and leads the team in assists with 41. Geiger scored a career-best 31 points against Concordia-Moorhead early in the season, 30 points in a win over Northland College and 27 points against Lakeland University.
- Ciriacks has buried his point total of all of last year. Ciriacks currently has 361 total points and last year, despite missing five games, scored 260 total points. Ciriacks currently has 700 career points, a mark that puts him at 56 among Stout all-time scorers. Geiger, who went from scoring 11 total points as a freshman to 332 points last season, currently has 286 points and 629 career points, putting him at 66 on the all-time list.
- TYreese Alexander, who transferred to Stout from Oakland Community College, is currently averaging 9.0 points and has scored in double digits in nine of 11 conference game Alexander is second on the team in rebounds at 5.4 per game and leads the team in blocked shots with 10. Alexander scored a career-best 21 points against UW-River Falls, Jan. 15.
- Several additional first-year performers have been making and impact on the Blue Devil line-up. Freshman Cliff McCray has started 18 games, including the last 14, and is averaging 8.5 points, putting him among the top 30 scorers in the league. McCray has hit 23 3-pointers, third behind Ciriacks' 48 and Geiger's 26. Kyle Jackson is averaging 6.9 points, coming off the bench in 16 games and starting two games.
- When Ciriacks scored a career-best 35 points against Bethany Lutheran. The 35 points is the most since Jerrod Buchholz scored 34 points Jan. 5, 2011 against UW-River Falls. The following is a list of players who have scored 35 or more points in a single game since 1998-99. - Miles Webb scored 37 points Jan. 16, 2008 against UW-Stevens Point. Jeff Vandeberghe 36 points vs. Elmhurst College, Dec. 13, 2003. Steve Krueger 37 points vs. UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 19, 2002.
- The Blue Devils scored 111 points in a 38-point win over Finlandia University, Nov. 24. The 111 point explosion is a mark Stout has not hit since the 1994-95 season. Of the six top scoring games this season among WIAC teams, Stout has two of the marks. UW-Platteville rolled Finlandia for 112 points earlier this season. UW-River Falls scored 101 points against Northwestern and scored 98 over UW-Superior. Stout scored 99 points in a 103-99 loss to Bethany Lutheran. Oshkosh put 105 points up against UW-Stevens Point and scored 99 points in a win over Edgewood. The Blue Devils also scored 97 points in an overtime win over Lakeland. The Blue Devils scored 90 or more points in four consecutive games from Nov. 13 through Nov. 26 (L 92-90; W 97-94; W 111-73; L 103-99).
- As a team, the Blue Devils are fifth in the league in scoring with 74.5 points. Stout is allowing 83.5 points.
- In a three game stretch (UW-Platteville, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh) will have played the top scoring 3-point teams. Platteville leads the league (9.05 3-pointers per game), followed by La Crosse (8.85) and Oshkosh (8.86).

AN OVERALL LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
- The Blue Devils are going to have to replace senior starters John Keefe and Zach Dahl, who graduated last year. That responsibility is likely to fall on the shoulders of 6-foot-2 guard Luke Geiger and 6-foot-6 forward Jon Ciriacks, who are both entering their junior seasons after breakout sophomore campaigns. Geiger and Ciriacks combined to average just over 26 points per game, with Geiger dropping in 13.8 points and Ciriacks, who earned all-WIAC honorable mention honors, scored 13.0 points. Ciriacks pulled down 6.6 rebounds per contest, ranking fifth in the WIAC. The Blue Devils bring back 11 players and bring on eight newcomers.
- Among returners, Geiger led Stout in 3-pointers made, averaging 2.13 long-range goals per game. Geiger hit seven 3-pointers when he scored a career-best 27 points against UW-Whitewater, Feb. 9. Geiger scored in double digits 19 times and four times surpassed 20 points.
- Ciriacks scored a near career-best when he dropped in 24 points against Whitewater, hitting six field goals with three 3-pointers and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Ciriacks scored a career-best 25 points against Northland College, Dec. 21.
- Among the returners for the Blue Devils include guards Josh Mericle, Carson Moe, Zach Miller and Peter Brey and forwards Matt Newman, Brady Booth, Cam Brussow and Makete Fru and center Kaden Koski.
- Koski started 11 games as a freshman and averaged 15.1 minutes. Newman saw action in 22 games. Mericle saw action in 19 games and started one. Booth saw action in 12 games, coming on during the conference season where he saw action in nine conference contests.
- Alexander played at Oakland (Mich) Community College for a season and brings athleticism to the Blue Devils. Briggs is slotted to play at the forward and will help to stretch the Blue Devils' offense, as well as clean up on the glass, as he gets more accustomed to the college game.
- Versatility from the No. 1 to No. 3 positions was a prime area of focus for Lake and his staff. Horton and Hill transferred from North Dakota State College of Science, but neither used basketball eligibility at the two-year school. Hill played football at NDSCS, but in high school was a WCCO high school basketball first team all-state player and was an all-state defensive MVP. Horton was a two-time all-conference player and was the Jefferson County player of the year.
- McCray, Jackson and Hoglund bring multiple skills to the Blue Devils.
- Hoglund brings a local flavor to the Blue Devils. The Chippewa Falls McDonell graduate was a Wisconsin Division 5 all-state first team selection and a member of four teams that qualified to state competition, including a state championship in 2016 and a runner-up trophy in 2018. Hoglund played high school ball for now Stout assistant coach Archie Sherbinow.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- After UW-Stout broke the ice by scoring the first basket of the night, UW-La Crosse set the tone by launching a 15-2 run on their way to a 94-62 win over the Blue Devils Wednesday in Mitchell Hall. To the Blue Devils' credit, they did cut the lead to 16-7 before the Eagles took off again and held a 51-22 halftime lead. The Eagles, who are receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, had four players score in double digits, led by Luke Norcia's 14 points. Ethan Anderson and Zion Turner each contributed 12 and Terek Nesheim finished with 11 points. the Eagles held a 40-26 advantage in rebounds. - The Blue Devils lost 96-77 to UW-River Falls, Feb. 5, and lost 84-72 to 12th-ranked UW-Platteville, Feb. 8.
- UW-Stout played a solid first half, taking a nine-point, 50-41, lead over UW-River Falls into the locker room at intermission. But the Blue Devils saw that lead disappear over the first five minutes of the second half as River Falls outscored Stout 23-2 and went on to suffer a 96-77 loss Feb. 5 at Johnson Fieldhouse. | Game Story and Statistics
- UW-Stout stayed within striking range, pulling to within one point, 59-58, midway through the second half, but 12th-ranked UW-Platteville pulled out to as much as a 14 point lead and went on to an 84-72 win over the Blue Devils Feb. 8. - The Eagles dropped out of the Top 25 of the D3hoops.com poll into the receiving votes category after back-to-back conference losses last week. Ethan Anderson leads La Crosse in scoring with 16.0 points. Led by Anderson, the Eagles have four players scoring in double digits. Wyatt Cook, the team's leading rebounders with 5.7 caroms, is averaging 11.3 points. Terek Nesheim is dropping in 11.2 and Zac Haese 11.0. THE EAGLES LAST TIME OUT
- The Eagles lost both contests last week, falling 83-75 at UW-Platteville, Feb. 5 and 79-74 to UW-Oshkosh, Feb. 8.
- La Crosse men's basketball team fell 83-75 at 12th-ranked UW-Platteville Feb. 5 night on Bo Ryan Court. The Pioneers led 65-53 with 6:16 left before the Eagles cut it to 67-61 with 3:03 remaining on Nesheim's three-point field goal. UWL could get no closer the rest of the game as UW-Platteville scored nine straight points from the line at one point in the second half. Norcia led the Eagles with a career-high 22 points and four steals while going five-of-five at the free throw line. - La Crosse fell 79-74 to UW-Oshkosh Feb. 8 in Mitchell Hall. Ethan Anderson's 3-pointer to start the second half gave UWL a 47-38 lead, but UW-Oshkosh used a 11-2 run to force a 49-49 tie on Levi Borchert's layup. The game was tied, 56-56, with 9:58 left when the Titans scored nine straight points to take a 65-56 advantage. Jack Flynn had six points in the run. - The Titans are the top scoring team in the WIAC with 82.6 points per contest. Oshkosh has scored more than 90 points six times this season, once in the WIAC. Oshkosh has scored 80 or more points in five of 11 conference games. Defensively, the Titans are seventh in the WIAC (74.5). - Jack Flynn had a game-high 20 points and Adam Fravert recorded his seventh consecutive double-double to lead the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team to a 66-59 victory at UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday (Feb. 12). UW-Oshkosh never trailed after a Flynn layup provided the Titans a 42-40 lead with 10:55 left in the game. - UW-Eau Claire's Cole Rabedeaux led all players with 32 points as the Blugolds reclaimed the lead during a long second-half scoring run and held on for a 78-76 win over the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team Wednesday (Feb. 5) in Kolf Sports Center. Eau Claire turned a 47-45 deficit into 63-49 lead in a span of less than four minutes. UW-Oshkosh trailed by as many as 11 points during the first half and faced a 47-38 deficit early in the second period before storming back to take the lead for good at 59-56 following a three-point play by Flynn with 9:08 remaining. BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.
UW-STOUT COACH JIM LAKE
- Jim Lake (11-36) is in his second season as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Lake came to Stout after 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Ferris State. The Bulldogs won the 2017-18 NCAA Division II national title.
- Lake served at Ferris State University for a total of 10 years, the last five years beginning with the 2013-14 season as the program's top assistant men's basketball coach. Lake had served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bulldogs in two different stints over the previous decade, working as a part-time assistant coach from 2011-13 before moving up to the full-time lead position, and as a volunteer assistant coach from 2003-06.
- During five seasons as the Bulldogs' top assistant coach, Lake helped Ferris State to four consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament championships and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, culminating in a 38-1 overall record and the 2018 NCAA Division II national title with a 71-69 win over Northern State University in March.
UW-LA CROSSE'S KENT DERNBACH
- Kent Dernbach is in his third season as head men's basketball coach at UW-La Crosse in 2019-20. Named head coach March 12, 2018, Dernbach served as the Eagles' interim head coach for the 2017-18 season. He is 30-23 overall and 15-13 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in his first two seasons. UWL finished 17-10 overall and 10-4 in the WIAC in 2018-19, placing second in the league standings. It was the Eagles' highest finish in the WIAC since capturing the regular-season crown in 2015-16. UWL also hosted a WIAC Tournament Semifinal in 2018-19 for the first time since 2015-16. The 17 victories in 2018-19 were the most since finishing 17-10 in 2013-14. The Eagles earned an at-large bid to the 2019 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championship under Dernbach, the team's second appearance (2006, 2019) in school history. UWL was one of 20 teams to earn an at-large bid to the national championships.
UW-OSHKOSH'S MATT LEWIS
- Matt Lewis begins his second season as the Titans' head coach, but his first as not wearing the interim head coaching job. Lewis led UW-Oshkosh to a 29-3 record, the WIAC regular season championship, the NCAA Division III championship title and several school marks during his debut season. The Titans claimed their first outright WIAC title since 1978 before going on to win six NCAA postseason games by an average of 15.5 points en route to the national title. UW-Oshkosh averaged 93.7 points in its six Division III Championship victories and set the school's NCAA postseason scoring record with its 108-point performance against University of Northwestern (Minn.) during the second round.
CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. UW-Oshkosh is projected to win the conference crown, according to a preseason poll conducted by WIAC coaches and sports information directors, followed by: UW-Platteville, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Whitewater, UW-La Crosse, UW-River Falls, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout.
DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.
