Gymnasts take four-point jump in team score in second meet of season

WINONA, Minn. (January 24, 2020) – UW-Stout captured the top five spots on the floor exercise, took the top two individual spots on the vault and uneven bars and took first place on every event as the Blue Devils defeated Winona State, 187.55-181.00 Friday. The team score was more than four points better than their season opener last week. 

The Blue Devils last week opened the season scoring a 183.25, their lowest score since the 2018 season. Stout was looking to put last week to rest and did just that tonight.
 
Mikala Bugge led the way on the floor exercise with 9.750 and Belle Ihde was second with a 9.575. Shadae Boone finished third (9.55), Carlie Beatty fourth (9.45) and Brooke Terry fifth (9.350). As a team, Stout scored 47.70.

Boone, the defending national champion on the vault, took top honors on the event with a 9.675, while Bugge was second with a 9.50. Britney Wolfe and Belle Ihde tied for fourth with a 9.375. The Blue Devils scored a 47.225 as a team.

Terry was first on the uneven bars with a 9.30 and Boone was second with a 9.150. The uneven bars was a particular sticking point for the Blue Devils last week, as Stout finished with one of the lowest team scores on the event since 2014. The Blue Devils turned that around by scoring a 44.975, nearly two points better than last week. Charli Sizemore was fourth (9.00) and Mallary Dick was fifth (8.85). 

Britney Wolfe topped out on the balance beam with a 9.725, where Stout took four of the top five spots. Terry was third (9.625), Beatty fourth (9.60) and Bugge fifth (9.55). The Blue Devils combined for a 47.60. 

Terry was the only performer of the night in the all-around and finished with a 37.150, more than a point better than last week. Terry tallied an 8.875 on the vault, 9.30 on the bars, 9.625 on the beam and 9.35 on the floor. 

The 187.55 team score was higher than four scores from last year's record-setting season. 

Stout will travel to UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Feb. 1 for a 4 p.m. contest.
