Gymnastics Preview: Stout to take on Winona State Friday

THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION: The Blue Devils will travel to Winona State University, Friday, Jan. 25 for a 6:30 p.m. contest. This will be the Blue Devils' second meet of the season after finishing third at a UW-Oshkosh Tri-Meet, Jan. 17. For the Warriors, it will be their third meet of the season. Winona defeated UW-Eau Claire, 177.650-176.350, Jan. 21.


A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
  • The Blue Devils are currently seventh in the NCGA, scoring an SAS average of 183.250 and an overall average of 183.250, according to the Road to Nationals website. Stout is currently ranked first on the balance beam (47.550) and fourth on the floor exercise (46.625).
  • Stout won their first ever WIAC Championship/NCGA Midwest Regional title last season and finished second at the NCGA Championship, their best-ever finish. Shadae Boone returns after winning both the NCGA and WIAC vault titles. Brooke Terry returns after winning the WIAC all-around and the balance beam title. Mikala Bugge returns as the defending WIAC champion on the floor exercise. Boone, Terry, Bugge, and Britney Wolfe return after earning NCGA All-America honors.
  • Defending national champion Brockport State is currently first nationally (187.083), UW-Whitewater second (185.225), UW-La Crosse third (184.088), UW-Oshkosh and Ithaca College tied for fourth (184.050), Cortland State sixth (183.275), Stout seventh (183.250) and Ursinus College eighth (183.163). Whitewater tops the West Region, La Crosse second,, Oshkosh third and Stout fourth. (Scores are based on average)
  • Seven Blue Devils were named to the 2019 NCGA All Championship Team. Shadae Boone was selected for the vault and the floor exercise, Brooke Terry was selected for the balance beam and the vault, Mikala Bugge was selected on the floor exercise and vault, Mallary Dick was selected on the uneven bars, Belle Ihde was selected on the floor exercise and Britney Wolfe was selected on the balance beam.

UW-STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
  • In a match that featured the top three teams from the 2019 WIAC Championship, UW-Stout placed third in their 2020 season opener behind UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater Friday at UW-Oshkosh. The Blue Devils took three of the top finishes on the balance beam with senior Brooke Terry leading the way, scoring a 9.750, just .025 short of her career-best. Sophomore Britney Wolfe captured second on the beam with a score of 9.675 and freshman Charli Sizemore, in her collegiate career, placed fourth with a 9.500. Freshman Carlie Beatty, also in her first collegiate meet, was seventh (9.450). The Blue Devils scored a 183.250, third behind UW-Oshkosh (186.200) and UW-Whitewater (184.625). Mikala Bugge took the top prize on the floor exercise, scoring a 9.600. Shadae Boone was third on the vault with a 9.400. Sizemore was Stout's top performer on the uneven bars, placing sixth on the event with a 9.250. Bugge and Wolfe tied for eighth on the vault with a 9.200. A LOOK AT WINONA STATE:Winona State University gymnastics team officially opened its 2020 campaign Jan. 9, falling in a competitive meet to WIAC foe Gustavus Adolphus College, 178.625-178.150. All-American Kelly Johnston took first place on the balance beam while fellow senior Kennedy Utz tied for first on the vault and junior Shelsea Zehr was the top finisher in the floor routine. Johnston, who placed fifth at Nationals last season, picked up right where she left off on the balance beam, besting the competition on Thursday with a score of 9.6. Sunny Hasebe placed fourth on the beam with a score of 9.225. Utz recorded a score of 9.3 on the vault, tying for the top spot with Gustavus' Emma Esteb. Freshman Allison Crescimanno placed fourth in her first collegiate meet with a score of 9.2. Utz also placed fourth with a floor routine that netted a 9.175. Zehr won the floor event with a score of 9.475. On the bars, Hannah Matuszak posted Winona State's top mark with a 9.025 to finish fourth overall. Anna Hiller was next with a score of 8.9. The Warriors are scheduled to compete at UW-Eau Claire, Tuesday, Jan. 21. The Warriors are currently ranked 13th in the NCGA.

WINONA STATE LAST TIME OUT: Coming off a narrow loss in its first meet of the 2020 season earlier this month, the Winona State University women's gymnastics team bounced back with a 177.650-176.350 victory against UW-Eau Claire on Tuesday night in WIAC competition. Hailey Bryant (vault) and Shelsea Zehr (floor exercise) each won their induvial events for the Warriors. Bryant posted season high scores in both her victorious vault effort (9.25) and third-place finish on the uneven parallel bars (8.975). Winona State's Anna Hiller placed second on the bars with a season-best score of 9.1. Zehr notched her second first-place finish in as many meets, topping her previous performance at Gustavus (9.475) with a mark of 9.5 on Tuesday. Kennedy Utz (9.275) was right behind her teammate for second place with a season high score on the floor as well. Utz, a senior, tied with freshman Allison Crescimanno on the vault with matching scores of 9.2 for second place. Fellow senior Kelly Johnston recorded Winona State's top mark on the balance beam with a second-place score of 8.825.


WIAC HONOR ROLL: The WIAC Honor Roll from this season (through January 19) includes the following top-10 scores. Brooke Terry is tied for first in the balance beam (9.750) and Britney Wolfe is fourth (9.650). Mikala Bugge is second on the floor exercise (9.600).
ROAD TO NATIONALS HONOR ROLL: Brooke Terry is currently first nationally on the balance beam (9.750), Britney Wolfe is fourth (9.650), Charlie Sizemore is 11th (9.500) and Carlie Beatty is 14th (9.450). Mikala Bugge is currently ninth nationally on the floor exercise (9.600). Sizemore is currently 14th (9.250) on the uneven bars.

UW-STOUT COACH BECKY BEAULIEU:
  • Becky Beaulieu is in her 15th season in 2020 as the Blue Devil coach.
  • Under Beaulieu's direction, UW-Stout gymnasts have earned 53 All-American awards and Beaulieu has coached national champions on the balance beam in 2008, the floor exercise in 2009, the uneven bars in 2010, the vault and floor exercise in 2011, the floor in 2015 and the vault in 2019. The 2019 team won the WIAC/NCGA Midwest Championship and finished second at the NCGA Championship.
  • A UW-Stout gymnast has qualified and competed at the NCAA Division I regionals in 2009 at the University of Iowa, in 2010 at the University of Utah and in 2018 at the University of Minnesota.
  • Beaulieu, competing as Becky McDonnell at UW-La Crosse from 1997-2001, captured back-to-back NCGA floor exercise titles in 1998 and 1999. She established a since-eclipsed school floor exercise record score of 9.8. A seven-time NCGA All-American, she also garnered all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors nine times. The Eagles, for which she was a two-year captain, won two NCGA titles during her competing days.
  • Beaulieu has been named the WIAC Coach of Year three times - 2011, 2015 and 2019. She was the NCGA West Region Coach of the Year
  • In 2012, Beaulieau was selected to the WIAC All-Time Gymnastics Team as the conference celebrated their 100th anniversary.
  • Beaulieu was inducted into the UW-La Crosse Wall of Fame in 2016.
  • Seth Helland joined the Blue Devil coaching staff in 2019. Helland was the head coach at Brainerd, Minn., High School, before coming to Menomonie.


WIAC AND NCGA: The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) is made up of eight schools - UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stout, UW-Whitewater, Hamline University, Gustavus Adolphus College and Winona State University. These eight schools make up the NCGA West Region and are also members of the 14-school National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA). The six East schools are: SUNY-Brockport, SUNY-Cortland, Ithaca (NY) College, Springfield (Mass) College, Rhode Island College, and Ursinus (Pa) College. Each region holds their own regional meet to determine which teams and individuals will advance to the NCGA Championship. The championship is alternated yearly between the East and the West, with the West hosting the event generally during the odd numbered years.

DOWN THE ROAD: : The Blue Devils will travel to UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Feb. 1 for a 4 p.m. contest.
