Road to Nationals
THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION: The Blue Devils will wrap up the dual portion of their schedule this week when they will head to UW-Eau Claire, Friday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. The Blue Devils and the Blugolds met earlier this season at the John Zuerlein Invitational, Feb 1 in Menomonie. In the head-to-head competition, the Blue Devils took a W 186.825-179.175 win.
A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
- The Blue Devils have been ranked within the top three in the NCGA since the first week of the season. The Blue Devils are currently third in the NCGA, scoring an SAS average of 188.3188 and an overall average of 187.650. Stout has scored more than 185 points in all six meets so far.
- The Blue Devils have earned the No. 1 seed for the NCGA West Regional, which will be held in conjunction with the WIAC Championship, Saturday, March 9. The Blue Devils are the host school.
- Brockport State is currently first nationally (188.764), Ithaca College second (188.332), UW-La Crosse fourth (186.861) and Springfield College fifth (186.525). Stout is first in the West Region, followed by La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Whitewater, UW-Eau Claire, Hamline University, Gustavus Adolphus College and Winona State.
- In the latest Road to Nationals individual rankings, the Blue Devils are the top-ranked team on the uneven bars, putting out an SAS score of 46.796, with a high score of 47.650.. Blue Devil Sierra Beaver is ranked first on the uneven bars (9.6500), Mallary Dick is fifth (9.5250). Mikala Bugge is ranked second in the all-around (37.8188). On the balance beam, Brooke Terry is second (9.6875) and freshman Britney Wolfe is 10th (9.6313). Shadae Boone is sixth on the vault (9.6313) and Bugge is seventh (9.600).
- The Blue Devils are ranked either first or second in the WIAC in the latest honor roll in all four of the individual events and in the all-around. The WIAC honor roll is based on top single score of the season. Sophomore Shadae Boone is tied for first on the vault (9.675), junior Sierra Beaver is first on the uneven bars (9.725) and junior Brooke Terry is tied for second on the balance beam (9.775). Junior Mikala Bugge is tied for first in the floor exercise (9.725) and leads the all-around (38.100).
- On their roster, Blue Devils have one senior, six juniors, seven sophomores and five freshmen.

LAST TIME OUT:
- UW-Stout broke a team record on the balance beam, but it wouldn't be enough to push the Blue Devils past UW-La Crosse as the Eagles handed Stout their first loss to a conference team this season. The Eagles took a 187.125-186.925 decision. The Blue Devils scored a 48.025 on the balance beam, their final event of the evening, placing five individuals within the top seven spots to break the former best mark of 47.400. The Blue Devils Emma Sirjord and Brooke Terry tied for first on the beam with the Eagles' Jessica Ahrens with a score of 9.650. Britney Wolfe was fifth (9.600), Sierra Beaver sixth (9.9750) and Mikala Bugge seventh (9.550). All eight Blue Devils (including two exhibition competitors) hit their routines tonight. The Blue Devils had the top two places on the floor exercise, with Bugge taking the event with a 9.525 and Belle Ihde second (9.400). Shadae Boone had the top score on the vault, scoring a 9.60. Boone became the second Division III athlete to successfully throw a layout Yurchenko 1 1/2. Bugge was tied for second (9.500). Overnight and throughout the weekend, the video captivated the gymnastics world, gathering in more than 100,000 on various social media platforms, according to one estimate. A LOOK AT UW-EAU CLAIRE
- The Blugolds were scheduled to compete at UW-Whitewater, Feb. 24, but that meet was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Blugolds last competed Feb. 19, Eau Claire had another close meet on Tuesday night, but this time fell on the road to Winona State University by a score of 183.100 to 182.350. Both teams recorded a score of 45.975 on vault and were separated by just .025 on the floor exercise. However, the Warriors held a 46.100-45.500 advantage on the uneven parallel bars and just edged the Blugolds on beam (44.750-44.625). Ashley Benes (So.- Grand Rapids, MN) lead Eau Claire on vault, winning the event with a season-best, 9.600. Hannah Lewis also won an event for the Blugolds, scoring a 9.475 while Amelia Moorehouse scored a season-best 9.525 on floor to win the event. UW-STOUT COACH BECKY BEAULIEU:
- Becky Beaulieu is in her 14th season as the Blue Devil coach.
- Under Beaulieu's direction, UW-Stout gymnasts have earned 46 All-American awards and Beaulieu has coached national champions on the balance beam in 2008, the floor exercise in 2009, the uneven bars in 2010, the vault and floor exercise in 2011, and the floor in 2015.
- A UW-Stout gymnast has qualified and competed at the NCAA Division I regionals in 2009 at the University of Iowa and in 2010 at the University of Utah.
- Beaulieu, competing as Becky McDonnell at UW-La Crosse from 1997-2001, captured back-to-back NCGA floor exercise titles in 1998 and 1999. She established a since-eclipsed school floor exercise record score of 9.8. A seven-time NCGA All-American, she also garnered all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors nine times. The Eagles, for which she was a two-year captain, won two NCGA titles during her competing days.
- In 2012, Beaulieau was selected to the WIAC All-Time Gymnastics Team as the conference celebrated their 100th anniversary.
- Beaulieu was inducted into the UW-La Crosse Wall of Fame in 2016.
- Seth Helland joined the Blue Devil coaching staff in 2019. Helland was the head coach at Brainerd, Minn., High School, before coming to Menomonie.
WIAC AND NCGA: The
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) is made up of eight schools - UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stout, UW-Whitewater, Hamline University, Gustavus Adolphus College and Winona State University. These eight schools make up the NCGA West Region and are also members of the 14-school
National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA). The six East schools are: SUNY-Brockport, SUNY-Cortland, Ithaca (NY) College, Springfield (Mass) College, Rhode Island College, and Ursinus (Pa) College. Each region holds their own regional meet to determine which teams and individuals will advance to the NCGA Championship. The championship is alternated yearly between the East and the West, with the West hosting the event generally during the odd years.
