Gymnastics Preview: Top-ranked Stout hosts Winona State on Senior Night

THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION: The Blue Devil gymnastics team is currently the top-ranked team in the NCGA, averaging 188.177 points. Stout will host Winona State University, Friday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. in the final regular season home meet of the season. The meet will be Senior Night and the Blue Devils will recognize their lone senior, Chelsea Gray.


A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
  • Since their first meet of the season, the Blue Devils have been the top-ranked team in the country, downing two-time defending champion UW-Whitewater, then stepped that up with the top Division III score of the season when they competed at a quadrangular at Texas Woman's University. The Blue Devils currently have an NCGA-best 188.117 points. Stout has scored more than 186 points in all three meets so far. 
  • Brockport State is currently second nationally (187.694), UW-La Crosse third (186.288), Ithaca College fourth (186.242), Springfield College fifth (186.00), UW-Whitewater sixth (183.958), Hamline University seventh (183.405), UW-Oshkosh eighth (183.345), Cortland State ninth (182.929) and Winona State 10th (181.640).
  • In the latest Road to Nationals individual rankings, Blue Devil Sierra Beaver is ranked first on the uneven bars (9.642). The top Stout individuals in this week's national individual rankings are, by event: Vault  2. Shadae Boone, (9.608) 4. Mikala Bugge (9.567); Uneven bars: 1. Beaver;  4. Brooke Terry (9.467), 5. Mallary Dick (9.442), 6. Belle Ihde (9.425); Balance beam: 2. Britney Wolfe (9.600), 9. Terry (9.500); Floor exercise: 8. Bugge 9.625), 10. Boone (9.617); All-around: 4. Bugge (37.542). 
  • The Blue Devils are on top of the WIAC in the latest honor roll in all four of the individual events and in the all-around. The WIAC honor roll is based on top single score of the season. Sophomore Shadae Boone tops the WIAC on the vault (9.675), junior Sierra Beaver on the uneven bars (9.725), freshman Britney Wolfe and junior Brooke Terry lead the league on the balance beam (9.750) and junior Mikala Bugge leads the floor exercise (9.725) and the all-around (38.100). 
  • On their roster, Blue Devils have one senior, six juniors, seven sophomores and five freshmen.

A LOOK AT WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY
  • Winona State is ranked 10th in the NCGA and has an average of 182.000. Winona State dropped a tightly-contested WIAC dual Friday night at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 182.2-180.55. The Warriors have scored at least 180 team points in four of their five meets to date this season, but are still seeking their first head-to-head victory.  Sunny Hasebe recorded a season high score of 9.25 on the balance beam to finish second for the Warriors. Senior Natalie Koehler posted a score of 9.150 to place third in the event. Elizabeth Maherfinished seventh with a season high score of 8.825. Shelsea Zehr matched her season-high mark of 9.25 on the uneven parallel bars to tie for second place at the meet. Alexis Burton placed sixth (8.825), followed by Hasebe (8.625) in seventh place. After finishing sixth on the balance beam, freshman Kaitlyn West posted Winona State's highest score on the vault with a 9.175 to finish third overall. Fellow rookie Hailey Bryant tied for fourth with a score of 9.15. Junior Alana Currin returned from injury at the meet and placed 11th in the event with a score of 8.8.

WIAC HONOR ROLL:
ROAD TO NATIONALS HONOR ROLL
LAST TIME OUT:
  • The Blue Devils easily defeated Hamline University and UW-Eau Claire, winning the title at the John Zuerlein Invitational, Feb. 1, scoring 186.825 points.
  • UW-Stout captured the top spots in all four individual events, plus the all-around, as the Blue Devils ran past Hamline University and UW-Eau Claire Friday at the John Zuerlein Invitational in Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils, the top scoring team in Division III, topped 186 points for the third consecutive time to open this season, rolling off 186.825 points. Hamline finished second (180.725) and Eau Claire was third (179.175)
  • Stout's Mikala Bugge tied for first on the vault (9.60) with teammate Shadae Boone and won the floor exercise (9.725) and the all-around (37.500). Both Bugge and Boone hit personal best scores on the floor exercise. Bugge had a 9.725 and Boone finished second with a 9.675. The Blue Devils captured the top four spots on the uneven bars led by Sierra Beaver's 9.550. Mallary Dick was second (9.400), Brooke Terry third (9.375) and Belle Ihde fourth (9.275).

AWARDS AND HONORS: 2019: Mikala Bugge was named the WIAC all-around athlete of the week after winning the all-around event at the John Zuerlein Invitational, Feb. 1....Mallary Dick was selected as the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week after winning the uneven bars in a team win over two-time defending national champion UW-Whitewater, Jan. 18.  2018: Shaquilla Payne was selected the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week, March 5 after winning the vault at the WIAC Championship...Sierra Beaver was selected the WIAC All-Arounder of the Week, Feb. 20, after setting a personal-best in finishing first in thevent with a home dual with UW-La Crosse, Feb. 16...Brooke Terry was selected as the WIAC all-arounder of the week and the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week, Jan. 22, after recording four personal best scores in the Blue Devils win over UW-Eau Claire...Sierra Beaver was selected as the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week, Jan. 15, after capturing two first place finishes and three second place finishes as the Blue Devils defeated UW-Oshkosh, 180.350-178.200, Jan. 12 at Kolf Sports Center.


UW-STOUT COACH BECKY BEAULIEU:
  • Becky Beaulieu is in her 14th season as the Blue Devil coach.
  • Under Beaulieu's direction, UW-Stout gymnasts have earned 46 All-American awards and Beaulieu has coached national champions on the balance beam in 2008, the floor exercise in 2009, the uneven bars in 2010, the vault and floor exercise in 2011, and the floor in 2015.
  • A UW-Stout gymnast has qualified and competed at the NCAA Division I regionals in 2009 at the University of Iowa and in 2010 at the University of Utah.
  • Beaulieu, competing as Becky McDonnell at UW-La Crosse from 1997-2001, captured back-to-back NCGA floor exercise titles in 1998 and 1999. She established a since-eclipsed school floor exercise record score of 9.8. A seven-time NCGA All-American, she also garnered all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors nine times. The Eagles, for which she was a two-year captain, won two NCGA titles during her competing days.
  • In 2012, Beaulieau was selected to the WIAC All-Time Gymnastics Team as the conference celebrated their 100th anniversary.
  • Beaulieu was inducted into the UW-La Crosse Wall of Fame in 2016.
  • Seth Helland joined the Blue Devil coaching staff in 2019. Helland was the head coach at Brainerd, Minn., High School, before coming to Menomonie. 


WIAC AND NCGA: The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) is made up of eight schools - UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stout, UW-Whitewater, Hamline University, Gustavus Adolphus College and Winona State University. These eight schools make up the NCGA West Region and are also members of the 14-school National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA). The six East schools are: SUNY-Brockport, SUNY-Cortland, Ithaca (NY) College, Springfield (Mass) College, Rhode Island College, and Ursinus (Pa) College. Each region holds their own regional meet to determine which teams and individuals will advance to the NCGA Championship. The championship is alternated yearly between the East and the West, with the West hosting the event generally during the odd years.

DOWN THE ROAD: : The Blue Devils will travel to Gustavus Adolphus College, Friday, Feb. 15 with a 6 p.m. meet.
