Road to Nationals
THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION: The Blue Devil gymnastics team has outscored all six WIAC schools they have competed against this season. The Blue Devils are currently ranked third in the NCGA. Eastern schools Brockport State and Ithaca College are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Stout will be at No. 4 UW-La Crosse, Friday, Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m. The Blue Devils outscored the Eagles, 189.950-187.350 when the teams last meet in a quadrangular at Texas Woman's University. The Eagles are the defending WIAC Champion and finished second last year in the NCGA Championship.
A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
- For the first three weeks of the season, the Blue Devils had been the top-ranked team in the country, downing two-time defending champion UW-Whitewater, then stepped that up with the top Division III score of the season when they competed at a quadrangular at Texas Woman's University. The Blue Devils defeated Winona State by more than five points, sweeping the top spot in each event, then squeaked past Gustavus Adolphus with their lowest score of the year. The Blue Devils are currently third in the NCGA, scoring and SAS average of 188.2938 and an overall average of 187.795. Stout has scored more than 185 points in all five meets so far.
- Brockport State is currently first nationally (190.1188), Ithaca College second (189.0625), UW-La Crosse fourth (187.5188) and Springfield College fifth (187.1563). Stout is first in the West Region, followed by La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Whitewater, Hamline University, UW-Eau Claire, Winona State and Gustavus Adolphus.
- In the latest Road to Nationals individual rankings, the Blue Devils are the top-ranked team on the uneven bars, putting out an SAS score of 47.2063. Blue Devil Sierra Beaver is ranked first on the uneven bars (9.650), Mallary Dick is fourth (9.535) and Brooke Terry ninth (9.45). Mikala Bugge is ranked second in the all-around (37.7188). On the balance beam, Terry is second (9.6563) and freshman Britney Wolfe is eighth (9.5813). Shadae Boone is sixth on the vault (9.6188) and Bugge is seventh (9.600).
- The Blue Devils are ranked either first or second in the WIAC in the latest honor roll in all four of the individual events and in the all-around. The WIAC honor roll is based on top single score of the season. Sophomore Shadae Boone is tied for first on the vault (9.675), junior Sierra Beaver is first on the uneven bars (9.725) and junior Brooke Terry is tied for second on the balance beam (9.775). Junior Mikala Bugge is tied for first in the floor exercise (9.725) and leads the all-around (38.100).
- On their roster, Blue Devils have one senior, six juniors, seven sophomores and five freshmen.

LAST TIME OUT:
- UW-Stout's Mikala Bugge won two individual events as second-ranked UW-Stout outscored their sixth straight WIAC gymnastics opponent with a 185.800-184.775 win over Gustavus Adolphus Feb. 15. Bugge won the vault with a score of 9.575 and took the floor exercise (9.650). Bugge was second in the all-around event (37.575). Brooke Terry was first on the balance beam with a score of 9.525 and was third on the uneven bars (9.400). Terry was fifth on the vault (9.400). Shadae Boone, this week's WIAC gymnastics specialist of the week, was second in the vault (9.550) and third on the floor exercise (9.500). A LOOK AT UW-LA CROSSE
- The Eagles last season won the WIAC crown, the 24th time they have captured the league's top spot and went on to finish second at the NCGA Championship. The Eagles are currently ranked fourth in the NCGA and second in the WIAC. Brooke Kachinsky is currently ranked third nationally on the uneven bars (9.55) and Dani Barmore is sixth (9.4938). - La Crosse set three season-highs in earning a 189.000 to 183.150 dual victory at Winona State University (Minn.) Feb. 15. The Eagles set season-highs in their overall (189.900), balance beam (47.325) and floor exercise (47.700). UWL recorded scores of 47.200 on the vault and 46.775 on the uneven parallel bars on Friday night. UWL swept the four individual event titles. The Eagles' Sam Weyker took the vault title while Breghan Kiloran won the uneven parallel bars (9.550) and Ally Blixt the balance beam (9.625). Weyker and Blixt tied for first on the floor exercise (9.600). Blixt was also fourth on the vault (9.425). Kacey Mortenson and Savannah Farrell tied for second on the vault (9.450) for the Eagles while Mortenson was also third on the floor exercise (9.550). Mortenson and Ellie Beckman tied for third on the uneven parallel bars (9.275). Brooke Kachinsky was second (9.450) on the uneven parallel bars while Olivia Opheim and Emiko Wilks tied for second on the balance beam (9.550). UW-STOUT COACH BECKY BEAULIEU:
- Becky Beaulieu is in her 14th season as the Blue Devil coach.
- Under Beaulieu's direction, UW-Stout gymnasts have earned 46 All-American awards and Beaulieu has coached national champions on the balance beam in 2008, the floor exercise in 2009, the uneven bars in 2010, the vault and floor exercise in 2011, and the floor in 2015.
- A UW-Stout gymnast has qualified and competed at the NCAA Division I regionals in 2009 at the University of Iowa and in 2010 at the University of Utah.
- Beaulieu, competing as Becky McDonnell at UW-La Crosse from 1997-2001, captured back-to-back NCGA floor exercise titles in 1998 and 1999. She established a since-eclipsed school floor exercise record score of 9.8. A seven-time NCGA All-American, she also garnered all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors nine times. The Eagles, for which she was a two-year captain, won two NCGA titles during her competing days.
- In 2012, Beaulieau was selected to the WIAC All-Time Gymnastics Team as the conference celebrated their 100th anniversary.
- Beaulieu was inducted into the UW-La Crosse Wall of Fame in 2016.
- Seth Helland joined the Blue Devil coaching staff in 2019. Helland was the head coach at Brainerd, Minn., High School, before coming to Menomonie.
WIAC AND NCGA: The
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) is made up of eight schools - UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stout, UW-Whitewater, Hamline University, Gustavus Adolphus College and Winona State University. These eight schools make up the NCGA West Region and are also members of the 14-school
National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA). The six East schools are: SUNY-Brockport, SUNY-Cortland, Ithaca (NY) College, Springfield (Mass) College, Rhode Island College, and Ursinus (Pa) College. Each region holds their own regional meet to determine which teams and individuals will advance to the NCGA Championship. The championship is alternated yearly between the East and the West, with the West hosting the event generally during the odd years.
