A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
  • Jon Ciriacks and Luke Geiger have been the driving force on the scoreboard. Ciriacks is currently averaging 19.3 points, third in the WIAC, while Geiger is averaging 15.6 points, 10th in the WIAC. Both Ciriacks and Geiger have scored career-bests this season, Geiger with 31 points against Concordia-Moorhead and Ciriacks 35 points against Bethany Lutheran. Ciriacks has stepped outside and has banked in 18-of-40 3-point attempts. Last year, Ciriacks made 31 total 3-point attempts. Ciriacks leads the team in rebounds, averaging 7.0 boards, while Geiger has slipped underneath to average 5.6 rebounds. Geiger recently scored 30 points in a win over Northland College and has a 27 point effort against Lakeland University to his credit. Several newcomers have been making their names known at this point in the season. Freshman Cliff McCray has started four games and is averaging 10.4 points, putting him among the top 25 scorers in the league. McCray has hit eight 3-pointers, third behind Ciriacks and Geiger's 11. Kyle Jackson is averaging 8.9 points and 3.1 rebounds, coming off the bench in five games. TYreese Alexander is averaging 5.5 rebounds, third on the team behind Ciriacks and Geiger.
  • When Ciriacks scored a career-best 35 points against Bethany Lutheran. The 35 points is the most since Jerrod Buchholz scored 34 points Jan. 5, 2011 against UW-River Falls. The following is a list of players who have scored 35 or more points in a single game since 1998-99. - Miles Webb scored 37 points Jan. 16, 2008 against UW-Stevens Point. Jeff Vandeberghe 36 points vs. Elmhurst College, Dec. 13, 2003. Steve Krueger 37 points vs. UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 19, 2002.
  • After seven games, Ciriacks has scored more than half as many points as all of last year. Ciriacks currently has 154 total points and last year, despite missing five games, Ciriacks scored 260 total points. Ciriacks currently has 493 career points, a mark that puts him within the top 100 Stout all-time scorers. Geiger, who went from scoring 11 total points as a freshman to 332 points last season, currently has 468 career points, putting him within the top 100.
  • The Blue Devils scored 111 points in a 38-point win over Finlandia University, Nov. 24. The 111 point explosion is a mark Stout has not hit since the 1994-95 season. Of the five top scoring games this season among WIAC teams, Stout has two of the marks. UW-Platteville rolled Finlandia for 112 points earlier this season. UW-River Falls scored 101 points against Northwestern and scored 98 over UW-Superior. Stout scored 99 points in a 103-99 loss to Bethany Lutheran. Oshkosh scored 99 points in a win over Edgewood. • As a team, the Blue Devils are averaging  83.6 points and giving up a league-high 83.4 points.  The Blue Devils scored 90 or more points in four consecutive games from Nov. 13 through Nov. 26 (L 92-90; W 97-94; W 111-73; L 103-99). .
  • Blue Devil Statistics

AN OVERALL LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
  • The Blue Devils are going to have to replace senior starters John Keefe and Zach Dahl, who graduated last year. That responsibility is likely to fall on the shoulders of 6-foot-2 guard Luke Geiger and 6-foot-6 forward Jon Ciriacks, who are both entering their junior seasons after breakout sophomore campaigns. Geiger and Ciriacks combined to average just over 26 points per game, with Geiger dropping in 13.8 points and Ciriacks, who earned all-WIAC honorable mention honors, scored 13.0 points. Ciriacks pulled down 6.6 rebounds per contest, ranking fifth in the WIAC. The Blue Devils bring back 11 players and bring on eight newcomers.
  • Among returners, Geiger led Stout in 3-pointers made, averaging 2.13 long-range goals per game. Geiger hit seven 3-pointers when he scored a career-best 27 points against UW-Whitewater, Feb. 9. Geiger scored in double digits 19 times and four times surpassed 20 points.
  • Ciriacks scored a near career-best when he dropped in 24 points against Whitewater, hitting six field goals with three 3-pointers and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Ciriacks scored a career-best 25 points against Northland College, Dec. 21.
  • Among the returners for the Blue Devils include guards Josh Mericle, Carson Moe, Zach Miller and Peter Brey and forwards Matt Newman, Brady Booth, Cam Brussow and Makete Fru and center Kaden Koski.
  • Koski started 11 games as a freshman and averaged 15.1 minutes. Newman saw action in 22 games. Mericle saw action in 19 games and started one. Booth saw action in 12 games, coming on during the conference season where he saw action in nine conference contests.
  • Alexander played at Oakland (Mich) Community College for a season and brings athleticism to the Blue Devils. Briggs is slotted to play at the forward and will help to stretch the Blue Devils' offense, as well as clean up on the glass, as he gets more accustomed to the college game.
  • Versatility from the No. 1 to No. 3 positions was a prime area of focus for Lake and his staff. Horton and Hill transferred from North Dakota State College of Science, but neither used basketball eligibility at the two-year school. Hill played football at NDSCS, but in high school was a WCCO high school basketball first team all-state player and was an all-state defensive MVP. Horton was a two-time all-conference player and was the Jefferson County player of the year.
  • McCray, Jackson and Hoglund bring multiple skills to the Blue Devils.
  • Hoglund brings a local flavor to the Blue Devils. The Chippewa Falls McDonell graduate was a Wisconsin Division 5 all-state first team selection and a member of four teams that qualified to state competition, including a state championship in 2016 and a runner-up trophy in 2018. Hoglund played high school ball for now Stout assistant coach Archie Sherbinow.

SCOUTING UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE
  • Mitch Berger leads the Spartans, which as a team averages 89.9 points per game and have scored 98 or more points in four game, with 15.6 points per contest. Berger is shooting at a .500 clip, hitting 34 of 68  from the field and 18 of 45 from 3-point range. Peter Ragen is tallying 13.4 points and Avery Butler, the team's rebounding leader at 9.4 caroms per game, is averaging 13.1 points. The Spartans know how to get to the line, making 114 of 163 free throws, hitting almost as many free throws as their opponents have attempted. Dubuque started off the season with a six game winning streak, but were downed by nationally ranked Nebraska Wesleyan, 88-63, the Spartans' lowest offensive output of the season.
  • Dubuque finished the 2018-19 campaign with an overall record of 14-15 and conference record of 6-10 and were picked to finish fifth in the American Rivers Conference, according to a preseason poll. After missing the conference tournament the previous two seasons, the Spartans returned and made some noise, defeating the fourth-seed Wartburg in a thrilling 83-80 win in Waverly. The Spartans would then fall in the semi-finals to Loras after upsetting the nationally ranked Duhawks in both regular season matchups. The Spartans return two upperclassmen starters in their front court in Avery Butler and Peter Ragen. In his junior season, and first with the Spartans, Butler started in 22 of the 23 games he played, averaging 11.3 points and 6.7 rebounds over 28.1 minutes. Butler dropped a career-high in just his second game in the blue and white, scoring 39 points in a 110-102 win over Greenville in the home opener. Ragen a two-year started for the Spartans, averaged 10.2 points and 4.2 boards in 23.9 minutes per game. The Spartans return four key bench players from the 2018-19 season, led by one of the team's two seniors, Henry Thompson, a three point specialist. Only one of Thompson's field goals in 2018-19 came from inside the arc. Juniors, Dylan Hundley and Mitch Burger provided sparks off the bench last season in different fashion. Hundley saw action in all 27 games with five starts with an average of 12 minutes, 1.7 points and 2.5 rebounds. Burger, appeared in 21 games, averaging 6.8 points and shot 41.3% (31-75) from three point territory. As a freshman, Cade Daugherty, saw action in 23 games with no starts and produced 3.9 points per game and two rebounds.

THE SPARTANS LAST TIME OUT
  • Dubuque bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 98-90 win over Alma, a team that defeated Stout in November. Both offense's came out clicking, but it was the Spartans who delived the first punch of the game with a 10-0 run to jump out to a 21-9 lead in the opening six minutes of action. Alma chipped away at the UD lead and took their first lead of the game with 6:43 remaining in the first half at 29-28. The teams would trade leads for final six and a half minutes of the half and it was Alma that took the lead into the break after an and one lay-up with 35 seconds left. Despite battling a little foul trouble in the first half, Peter Ragen still led the Spartans with 10 halftime points. In the half, Alma connected on nearly 56% of their shots, while UD made 45.5% of theirs through 20 minutes. Ragen scored the first bucket of the second half to give the lead to UD and the Spartans never looked back, building a lead as big as 17 points at the halfway point of the second half. Alma would once again slowly chip away at this UD lead as well, getting as close as five points with just under three minutes remaining, however, UD had every answer late to hold off Alma for the 98-90 victory and improve to 6-1. The shooting percentages flipped in the second half, this time it was the Spartans shooting nearly 55% in the half and the UD defense held Alma to just 40.5% from the field in the half. Mitch Burger just missed out on a double-double after leading UD with 19 points and nine assists with just three turnovers in 35 minutes. Ragen wound up finishing with 18 points on 6-15 shooting and connecting on four of five from the free throw line. As a team the Spartans sank almost 80% from the charity stripe, going 19-24. |  Game Story and Statistics
LAST TIME STOUT AND DUBUQUE MET
  • Stout holds a 4-0 lead in the series. The Blue Devils won a 60-58 decision when the teams last met during the 2016-17 season. When UW-Stout's John Keefe hit a shot at the buzzer to end the first half, the points would represent the widest scoring margin of the game as the Blue Devils went on to a two-point, 60-58, win over the University of Dubuque, Dec. 10, 2016 in Johnson Fieldhouse. Braden Walbeck (So, Fall Creek) and Sam Ortmann (Jr, Buffalo, Minn) hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Stout a 60-55 with 36 seconds left. A 3-pointer by Deonte Newsome with 22 seconds pulled Dubuque to within 60-58 with 22 seconds left. Stout killed 17 seconds off the clock, but turned the ball over with five seconds left. The Blue Devils did not allow the Spartans a wide-open shot and the 3-point attempt by Marcus McDaniel hit the front of the rim and the rebound was pulled down by Ortmann who sealed the ball and the game. | Game Story and Statistics
