A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
  • Jon Ciriacks and Luke Geiger have been the driving force on the scoreboard. Ciriacks is currently averaging 20.4 points, fourth in the WIAC, while Geiger is averaging 13.6 points. Both Ciriacks and Geiger have scored career-bests this season, Geiger with 31 points against Concordia-Moorhead and Ciriacks 35 points against Bethany Lutheran. Ciriacks has stepped outside and has banked in 17-of-34 3-point attempts. Last year, Ciriacks made 31 3-point attempts. Ciriacks leads the team in rebounds, averaging 7.0 boards, while Geiger has slipped underneath to average 5.9 rebounds. Several newcomers have been making their names known early in the season. Freshman Cliff McCray has started four games and is averaging 11.2 points. McCray has hit eight 3-pointers, second behind Ciriacks. Kyle Jackson is averaging 10.2 points and 3.2 rebounds, coming off the bench in five games. TYreese Alexander is averaging 5.4 rebounds, third on the team behind Ciriacks and Geiger.
  • Ciriacks was held to fewer that 14 points for the first time all season at Cardinal Stritch, finishing with 12 points. Previous to that, Ciriacks has scored at least 14 points in each of the first six games and three times has exceeded 20 points. He scored a career-best 35 points against Bethany Lutheran. The 35 points is the most since Jerrod Buchholz scored 34 points Jan. 5, 2011 against UW-River Falls. The following is a list of players who have scored 35 or more points in a single game since 1998-99. - Miles Webb scored 37 points Jan. 16, 2008 against UW-Stevens Point. Jeff Vandeberghe 36 points vs. Elmhurst College, Dec. 13, 2003. Steve Krueger 37 points vs. UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 19, 2002.
  • After seven games, Ciriacks has scored more than half as many points as all of last year. Ciriacks currently has 143 total points and last year, despite missing five games, Ciriacks scored 260 total points. Ciriacks currently has 482 career points, a mark that puts him within the top 100 Stout all-time scorers. Geiger, who went from scoring 11 total points as a freshman to 332 points last season, currently has 438 career points, putting him within the top 100.
  • The Blue Devils scored 111 points in a 38-point win over Finlandia University, Nov. 24. The 111 point explosion is a mark Stout has not hit since the 1994-95 season. Of the five top scoring games this season among WIAC teams, Stout has two of the marks. UW-Platteville rolled Finlandia for 112 points earlier this season. UW-River Falls scored 101 points against Northwestern and scored 98 over UW-Superior. Stout scored 99 points in a 103-99 loss to Bethany Lutheran. Oshkosh scored 99 points in a win over Edgewood. The Blue Devils also scored 97 points in an overtime win over Lakeland.
  • As a team, the Blue Devils are leding the league in scoring with 84.0 points and are leading the league in steals, averaging 9.14 per game. The thievery has been a team effort. Geiger has a team-best 11, while McCray and Josh Mericle each have nine steals. Kyle Jackson and Ciriacks each have eight.
  • As a team, the Blue Devils are averaging  84.0 points and giving up a league-high 86.7 points.  The Blue Devils scored 90 or more points in four consecutive games from Nov. 13 through Nov. 26 (L 92-90; W 97-94; W 111-73; L 103-99). .
  • Blue Devil Statistics

AN OVERALL LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
  • The Blue Devils are going to have to replace senior starters John Keefe and Zach Dahl, who graduated last year. That responsibility is likely to fall on the shoulders of 6-foot-2 guard Luke Geiger and 6-foot-6 forward Jon Ciriacks, who are both entering their junior seasons after breakout sophomore campaigns. Geiger and Ciriacks combined to average just over 26 points per game, with Geiger dropping in 13.8 points and Ciriacks, who earned all-WIAC honorable mention honors, scored 13.0 points. Ciriacks pulled down 6.6 rebounds per contest, ranking fifth in the WIAC. The Blue Devils bring back 11 players and bring on eight newcomers.
  • Among returners, Geiger led Stout in 3-pointers made, averaging 2.13 long-range goals per game. Geiger hit seven 3-pointers when he scored a career-best 27 points against UW-Whitewater, Feb. 9. Geiger scored in double digits 19 times and four times surpassed 20 points.
  • Ciriacks scored a near career-best when he dropped in 24 points against Whitewater, hitting six field goals with three 3-pointers and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Ciriacks scored a career-best 25 points against Northland College, Dec. 21.
  • Among the returners for the Blue Devils include guards Josh Mericle, Carson Moe, Zach Miller and Peter Brey and forwards Matt Newman, Brady Booth, Cam Brussow and Makete Fru and center Kaden Koski.
  • Koski started 11 games as a freshman and averaged 15.1 minutes. Newman saw action in 22 games. Mericle saw action in 19 games and started one. Booth saw action in 12 games, coming on during the conference season where he saw action in nine conference contests.
  • Alexander played at Oakland (Mich) Community College for a season and brings athleticism to the Blue Devils. Briggs is slotted to play at the forward and will help to stretch the Blue Devils' offense, as well as clean up on the glass, as he gets more accustomed to the college game.
  • Versatility from the No. 1 to No. 3 positions was a prime area of focus for Lake and his staff. Horton and Hill transferred from North Dakota State College of Science, but neither used basketball eligibility at the two-year school. Hill played football at NDSCS, but in high school was a WCCO high school basketball first team all-state player and was an all-state defensive MVP. Horton was a two-time all-conference player and was the Jefferson County player of the year.
  • McCray, Jackson and Hoglund bring multiple skills to the Blue Devils.
  • Hoglund brings a local flavor to the Blue Devils. The Chippewa Falls McDonell graduate was a Wisconsin Division 5 all-state first team selection and a member of four teams that qualified to state competition, including a state championship in 2016 and a runner-up trophy in 2018. Hoglund played high school ball for now Stout assistant coach Archie Sherbinow.

NORTHLAND'S SCOTT SORENSON
  • Scott Sorenson is in his fourth year leading the Northland College Men's Basketball Program. Over the past three seasons, Sorenson has helped start a new era in LumberJack basketball.  After taking over a downtrodden program (zero winning seasons since 1996), Sorenson's impact was immediately felt as the LumberJacks increased their win total in each of Sorenson's first 3 years, made improvements in nearly every major statistical category and increased their initial roster size to 18, the most student-athletes on the men's basketball roster in over a decade.   Before arriving at Northland, Sorenson was a six-year veteran of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, spending the previous 4 seasons as the top assistant coach at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC).  Sorenson also used his coaching prowess to serve as an assistant for the UMC softball team.  Prior to his time at UMC, Sorenson spent two seasons helping rebuild the men's basketball program at Bemidji State University. He also served as Head Women's Tennis Coach for the Beavers where his program set a school record for wins in a season and he coached the 2008 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Most Valuable Player. Preceding his stint at Bemidji State, Sorenson served two years as an assistant coach at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis. under former UW-Green Bay standout Gary Grzesk. While at Lakeland, Sorenson helped lead the Muskies to a Lake Michigan Conference Championship in 2006.
