THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION: The Blue Devil gymnastics team will host the John Zuerlein Invitational, Friday, Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. Hamline University and UW-Eau Claire will also compete.
A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
- On the strength of a school record 189.950 score at a quadrangular hosted by Texas Woman's University Sunday, the Blue Devils have a combined SAS average of 188.763. Brockport State is second at 187.242. UW-La Crosse is the second-ranked WIAC school (186.058). In the season-opening meet, the Blue Devils scored 187.575 points in defeating two-time defending national champion UW-Whitewater, Jan. 18.
- The top Stout individuals in this weeks national individual rankings are: Shadae Boone, 2nd on the vault (9.613) and 10th on the floor exercise (9.588); Sierra Beaver second on the uneven bars (9.688); Britney Wolfe fifth on the balance beam (9.55) and Mikala Bugge, third in the all-around (37.563).
- The Blue Devils are on top of the WIAC in the latest honor roll in three of the individual events and in the all-around. The WIAC honor roll is based on top single score of the season. Sophomore Shadae Boone tops the WIAC on the vault (9.675), junior Sierra Beaver on the uneven bars (9.725) and freshman Britney Wolfe and junior Brooke Terry lead the league on the balance beam (9.750). Junior Mikala Bugge broke 38 for the first time in her career and leads the all-around (38.100).
- Last time out, the Blue Devils competed against their second defending national champion in as many weeks. Texas Woman's University has earned what would be considered the NCAA Division II title the last two years. While the Blue Devils did not beat the Pioneers, they did tie for second with a school record 189.950, just short of 190.
- Along the way, Stout broke two team event records - the uneven bars and the balance beam. The ink on the previous uneven bars record had barely dried. Stout had notched a mark of 47.550 last week in the season opener, but improved on that mark with a 47.650 today. Stout set a balance beam mark of 47.450, breaking the previous record of 47.300 at the aforementioned Oshkosh meet.
- Host Texas Woman's took first in the meet with a 194.300. Stout tied with Centenary College and downed conference opponent UW-La Crosse (187.350) by more than two points. Texas Woman's is an NCAA Division II member and the last two years have won the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championship, which is, in essence, the Division II national title, similar to the Division III NCGA Championship. Centenary is a Division III program from Louisiana, but the school's athletic program made the switch from Division I to Division III several years ago. UW-La Crosse is the owner of 17 NCGA titles and 24 WIAC titles.
- Shadae Boone had a pair of Top-8 finishes, capturing third on the vault (9.675) and eighth on the floor exercise (9.625). Mikala Bugge was third in the all-around (38.100) and fourth on the vault (9.650). Brooke Terry and Britney Wolfe were in a four-way tie for fourth place (9.750) on the balance beam. Terry was fourth on the all-around (37.200) and Wolfe was fifth (35.400). Sierra Beaver was sixth on the uneven bars (9.725).
- In their season opener, the Blue Devils upended two-time defending national champion UW-Whitewater, the first time Stout has outscored the Warhawks since the 2009 season. The team score of 187.575 was the best season-opening score for the Blue Devils in their 50-plus year history and is eighth on the all-time scoring list. The score is the highest opening score of any DIII school this season. Stout has not outscored Whitewater since Feb. 6, 2009, when they downed the Warhawks, 180.10-179.650.
- The Blue Devils set a team school record on the uneven bars, scoring a total of 47.550 when five gymnasts scored 9.30 or better. The previous school record was 47.400 set late in the 2014 season.
- The Blue Devils' Mallary Dick tied with the Warhawks' Blaisee Wilson for first on the event with a 9.700, far surpassing her previous high of 9.40 on the event. Five Blue Devils scored personal bests on the uneven bars, led by Dick. Brooke Terry was sixth (9.425), Belle Ihde seventh (9.400), Mikala Bugge eighth (9.375) and Olivia Rosenow, making her first varsity appearance on the uneven bars.
- The preseason was a bit of a surprise for UW-Stout gymnastics coach Becky Beaulieu and her staff. Beaulieu came into the season thinking the 2019 season might be a year to lay a foundation, then use that foundation to launch into the 2020 season. But the first couple of months of workouts have been amazing, Beaulieu said. And the coach, who begins her 14th year at the helm of the Blue Devils, believes the boost can be credited to her 14 returners, and new assistant coach Seth Helland.
- Three Blue Devils earned 2018 NCGA All-America awards to close out last season. Brooke Terry placed fourth in the all-around, Sierra Beaver was fifth on the balance beam and Shaquilla Payne was fifth on the vault.
- Brooke Terry advanced to the NCAA Division I regional last season at the University of Minnesota. Sierra Beaver was an alternate.
- On their roster, Blue Devils have one senior, six juniors, seven sophomores and five freshmen.
