THE BLUE DEVILS IN 2018-19
- The Blue Devils are averaging 78.7 points per game and giving up 80.3. Stout last year finished the season averaging 69.6 points and gave up 74.9. Three times this season, Stout has scored 90 points or more three times and seven times have scored 80 points or more. The team's highest offensive output so far this year was 96 points in a win over Silver Lake College. Their lowest output was 69 points in a win over Finlandia University in December. As a team, the Blue Devils are third in the WIAC scoring offense, but eighth in scoring defense.
- Stout is tied for first in the WIAC in steals (8.00) with UW-Eau Claire. Kyle Williams is fifth in the league in steals (1.50) and John Keefe is 15th (1.08). Stout has six players with 13 or more steals.
- After missing all except two minutes of last season due to injury, John Keefe eased into the first games of the season, then went on a tear. Keefe scored 12 and 7 points, respectively in the first two games, and has scored in double digits in nine of 10 games played. Keefe is currently leading the WIAC in scoring with 21.3 points and is ranked 28th nationally. But Keefe has missed the last two games. Keefe has scored in double digits in 11 of the 12 games he has played. Three times he has scored 30 points or more and seven times more than 20 points. Keefe is third in the WIAC in 3-pointers made with 3.2 per outing. Keefe hit a career-best 33 points in an overtime loss to McMurry University. Keefe currently has 1137 career points, and is 13th on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list, just passing Mel Coleman (1130). Keefe currently has 171 3-pointers made, and is fifth on the all-time list - 1. Eric Hostetter (219); 2. Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (187); 3. Jeremy Leibfried (186); 4. Jerrod Buchholtz (182). In injury in the UW-Whitewater game Jan. 9 kept Keefe out of the game with UW-Platteville, Jan. 12.
- Zach Dahl overcame a cold start to the season from the floor. The senior captain did not hit a shot from the floor in the first two games, scoring only two points from the free throw line, which may have been an early season precursor. Dahl has steadily increased his scoring totals and is now averaging 7.9 points per game and is among the team leaders in rebounds, averaging 3.9 per game. On the free throw line, Dahl has been steady, hitting 27 of 35 attempts (.771). Dahl is 20 of 44 from 3-point range, and his percentage (.455) is second in the league.
- Sophomore captain Jon Ciriacks played the first two games of the season, then missed the next five games before returning against Crown College, Dec. 7. Now, Ciriacks is averaging 14.1 points and 7.6 rebounds. During his freshman season, Ciriacks averaged 4.2 points and 2.2 rebounds. Ciriacks is the team's second-leading scorer and top rebounder. Out of 11 games played, Ciriacks has scored in double figures nine times, twice scoring 20 or more points. Ciriacks pulled down a career-best 13 rebounds in the season-opener against Lawrence, giving him is first career double-double. Players must have seen time in 75 percent of all games to appear in the WIAC statistics categories and Ciriacks has played in 69 percent of the games. Ciriacks would be eighth in scoring and third in rebounds.
- Sophomore Luke Geiger exceeded his entire freshman season scoring totals during the Blue Devils' season-opening overtime win over Lawrence. Geiger last season had 11 points for the entire season, but finished the game with 15 points. Geiger is currently third on the team in scoring, averaging 11.9 points. Geiger nine times this season has scored in double digits, scoring a career-best 21 points against Northland College.. With 27 3-pointers, Geiger trails only Keefe on the team. Geiger scored 20 points against River Falls.
- Junior transfer Kyle Williams has come off the bench to average 5.4 points, is second on the team in assists with 41, and leads the team with 21 steals.
- Only five Blue Devils have played in all 16 games - Zach Dahl, D'Marcco Patrick, Braden Walbeck, Garret Parks and Brandon Gilbertson. Dahl and Patrick have started all 16 games.
- The 96 points scored against Silver Lake is the most since scoring scoring 109 against Crown College in February, 2011. Stout scored 94 against Silver Lake College last December.

- Keefe returns for his super senior season. The Blue Devils' leading scorer from the 2016-17 season made it less than two minutes into last season when he was injured in the season opener and was lost for the entire season. Keefe was injured when he laid in his only basket of the season. During the 2016-17 season, Keefe scored in double figures in 19 of 26 games, and scored a career-high 32 against former WIAC foe UW-Superior in November. Keefe dished off at least two assists in every game and had four or more assists in 16 games. Keefe led Stout in all major categories, including points per game (15.0), rebounds/game (6.2), assists/game (4.6), steals/game (1.5), and minutes/game (35.5). BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- Trailing 31-10, UW-Stout went on a 17-3 run to close out the final six minutes of the first half to pull to within seven points, 34-27, at halftime, but UW-River Falls would just barely hold off the Blue Devils and defeated Stout, 71-69, Wednesday. Stout kept up the offensive in the second half, getting as close a one point, 66-65, with 2:22 left in the game, but could not get over the hump.Trailing by five at 2:33, Luke Geiger pulled Stout to within 66-61. D'Marcco Patrick stole the ball and went the distance to lay the ball in, then connected on both free throws following a River Falls technical foul and Stout trailed 66-65. The Falcons extended the lead to three points on a pair of free throws by Julian Jackson, but Patrick brought Stout back to within one point, 68-57, making two charity shots. A 3-pointer by the Falcons' Jack Stensgard was answered by a layup by Zach Dahl. The Falcons missed three consecutive shots in the final 40 seconds of the game and a potential game winning 3-pointer by Geiger missed the mark.Geiger would lead all scorers with 20 points, one point short of a career-best. Patrick finished with 10 points.
- That first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) win has been elusive for the UW-Stout as the Blue Devils fell, 75-72, to UW-Platteville Saturday on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse. Zach Dahl hit a 3-pointer with 57.1 seconds left in the game to give the Blue Devils a one point, 70-69, lead. The Pioneers had fouls to give and they used them before fouling Luke Geiger, who drained both shots with 24 seconds to push Stout (6-9, 0-4 WIAC) up 72-69. But the Pioneers' (9-6, 2-2 WIAC) Carter Voelker hits a 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining to tie game at 72, the was fouled, but missed free throw. The Pionners' Clay Gerds pulls down rebound and Platteville's Kyle Tuma hits the game-winner with 2.1 seconds remaining. Stout's last chance shot was off the mark. Geiger led Stout, which was playing without leading scorer John Keefe, with 19 points. Jon Ciriacksadded 16 points.
- UW-Whitewater carried through a 24-10 first half lead and took a 40-26 halftime lead into the locker room to down UW-Stout 83-60 at Kachel Gymnasium. The Blue Devils (6-8, 0-3) cut the score to as close as 27-22 with five minutes remaining in the half, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way. Stout got 13 points from John Keefe, a double-double from Jon Ciriacks with 12 points and 10 rebounds and 10 points from Luke Geiger. Stout shot 40 percent (22-55) from the field, 31.8 percent (7-22) from the 3-point range and 64.3 percent (9-14) from the free throw line.

THE FALCONS THE LAST TIME OUT
- UW-Oshkosh used a 20-2 scoring run in the first half to build a 23-point halftime lead that helped them run away with a 91-56 win over UW-River Falls on Saturday night in Oshkosh. The Titans have now won 13 games in a row this season, while the Falcons dropped to 0-4 in the WIAC. The Falcons stayed close in the opening minutes, only trailing 9-7 after Matt Kellerknocked down a jumper four minutes into the game. However, the Falcons didn't hit another field goal for the next six minutes, a stretch where the Titans went 8-12 from the field and went up by 21 points. UWRF brought the game back within 15 points after a jumper from Julian Jackson with three minutes remaining in the first half, but UW-Oshkosh closed the half on a 10-2 run to solidify their lead. The Titans went into the break shooting 7-11 from beyond the arc and over 50 percent from the field. | Game Story and Statistics
- The Falcons couldn't find their first WIAC win of the season, falling 74-64 on the road at UW-Platteville on Jan. 9. Jack Stensgard led UW-River Falls with 18 points and knocked down five three-pointers, but he was the only Falcon to finish in double figures. UWRF led in the early minutes of the game by as much as 8-5 after Stensgard knocked down two three-pointers. However, a three-pointer from Quentin Shields put the Pioneers up 10-8 and they led the game the rest of the way. The Falcons tied the game back up at 14-14 after a pair of free throws from Alex Ohde, and the game was back within two points at 22-20 after a jumper from Julian Jackson. Nathan Macho, Jr. knocked down a three-pointer with thirty seconds remaining in the half to make it only a four point deficit at 33-29. Macho, Jr. made all three of his shots in the first half and had seven points off the bench. The teams traded baskets throughout the beginning of the second half, and the deficit was reduced to two points when Stensgard made another three-pointer with under 11 minutes remaining in the second half. However, they wouldn't get that close again and would ultimately lose by 10 points. The Falcons shot 35 percent from the field and 29 percent from beyond the arc, while the Pioneers finished shooting 41 percent overall and 42 percent on three-pointers. Austin Heidecker had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Falcons, but the team struggled with fouls as five players had at least three fouls.
LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND RIVER FALLS MET
- Three starters scored in double figures for UW-Stout, but it was UW-River Falls that finished with the upper-hand as the Falcons defeated the Blue Devils, 96-68, Jan. 20, 2018 at Page Arena. Stout's Joe Duty scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the first half, including the Blue Devils' (7-10, 1-5 WIAC) first five points of the game. The Blue Devils, fresh off their first conference win earlier in the week, were outscored 42-29 in the first half as the Falcons (12-4, 3-3 WIAC) shot 58.3 percent from the floor, hitting 14 of 24 shots. River Falls stayed hot in the second half, finishing 56.4 percent (32-57) for the game.
- UW-Stout came back from a 12-point second half deficit and Adam Mackey hit the game winner with 1.6 seconds remaining as the Blue Devils defeated UW-River Falls Feb. 7, 2018, on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse. Mackey's bucket was the exclamation point as the Blue Devils (8-14, 2-9 WIAC) came back from 12 points down. Trailing 61-49 at 13:11 of the second half, Stout went on a 15-2 run to take a 64-63 lead six minutes later. Isaac Elliott and Sam Ortmann would each score five points in the run and Mackey hit a 3-pointer and Josh Mericle a two-pointer.
SCOUTING UW-EAU CLAIRE:

THE BLUGOLDS LAST TIME OUT
- Eau Claire men's basketball team fell on the road Wednesday night, falling to UW-Platteville, 81-62. The Pioneers grabbed the lead early thanks to shooting over 50 percent from the field and over 60 percent from three in the first half while the Blugolds shot 43.5 percent from the field and were 2-of-6 from the three-point line. Platteville's hot shooting led to a 45-22 advantage heading into the locker room. Eau Claire's offense would get going in the second half and outscored the Pioneers 40-36 but it would not be enough for a come-from-behind win. The Blugolds finished the game 23-for-55 (41.8 percent) from the field but only 6-for-21 (28.6 percent) from beyond the arc. Spencer Page (Fr. – Rice Lake, WI) came off the bench to lead Eau Claire in scoring, tallying 14 points in 24 minutes. Ben Widdes (Sr. – Rice Lake, WI) also finished in double figures, recording 13 points.
- Eau Claire was defeated by No. 9 UW-Stevens Point Pointers at Zorn Arena Jan. 12 by a score of 68-53. The first half was highly contested between the Blugolds and the Pointers with eleven lead changes and saw the score tied five times. Eau Claire shot 48.1 percent from the field while holding Point to 39.3 percent, which allowed the Blugolds to gain a one-point lead closing out the first half, 30-29. The Blugolds could not keep the hot-shooting going in the second half while Stevens Point came out of the locker room with an 11-0 run early in that was just too much for Eau Claire to negate as the 9th-ranked Pointers came away with a 68-53 win.
LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND EAU CLAIRE MET
- UW-Stout's Sam Ortmann stepped in front of the pass at the UW-Eau Claire free throw line, drove the distance of the court and was hammered as he layed the ball in. Waiting to get the ball for the free throw attempt, Ortmann turned to the UW-Stout bench and smiled, then calmly dropped in the charity shot to give Stout a 10 point, 55-45, lead with just less than four minutes remaining. That was the type of game it was for the Blue Devils as they picked up their first conference win of the season, 65-51, Jan. 17, 2018, on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse. Holding a 13 point, 50-37 lead with seven minutes left in the game, the Blue Devils (7-9, 1-4 WIAC) did not blink after the Blugolds (8-8, 0-5 WIAC) cut the lead to seven with back-to-back 3-pointers. The teams traded leads through much of the first half until Stout pulled ahead 24-22 with 2:23 left in the half on a Zach Dahl layup. Isaac Elliott extended the lead with two free throws, then added a jumper to give Stout a 28-22 lead with a minute remaining. The Blugolds cut the lead to 28-24 with a put-back bucket at the buzzer by Kyle McDonald. The Blue Devils extended the lead to seven points in the second half before Eau Claire tied the score at 37-all at the 13-minute mark. Ortmann gave Stout a lead with a three-point play and Stout would never trail again, going on a 13-0 run. That's when Eau Claire got the back-to-back 3-pointers by Cam Kuepers and Chris Duff. Stout finished the game on a 15-6 advantage, snagging their first conference win and breaking a six game losing streak to the Blugolds.
- In a game that featured 13 lead changes and 10 tied scores and a game that was even for the first 35 minutes, UW-Eau Claire grabbed the momentum in the last five minutes and went on to a 77-68 win over UW-Stout Jan. 31, 2018, at Zorn Arena. The Blugolds (10-10, 2-7 WIAC) gathered a little bit of that momentum late in the first half, overcoming a six point Stout (7-13, 1-8 WIAC) lead and tied the game 36-36 at halftime. The game differential in the second half was never more than five points for either team until until Eau Claire went on an 8-2 run to break a 58-58 tie and held a 66-60 lead with 5:02 left. Eau Claire closed out the game with an 11-6 run to take the nine point win. Eau Claire's George Diekelman led all scorers with 27 points. Clay Kujawa came off the bench to score 15 points and Dan Becken added 10 points. Zach Dahl led Stout with a career-best 18, scoring 10 in the second half.
