BIRMINGHAM, Ala (March 9, 2018) - UW-Stout's
Sam Elsner and
Noah Zastrow each earned All-America honors at the 2018 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Elsner set the school record in the weight throw and Zastrow was fifth in the pole vault. At the end of the first day, Stout was in third place.
The difference between first and second place was a fraction of an inch for Elsner. The senior obliterated his own school record, a mark of 62-feet, 3-inches in the team's second meet of the season in January, with a monster toss of 65-feet, 0-inches. on his first throw of the day. UW-La Crosse's Andrew Jarrett won the event, going 65-feet, 00.50-inches, on his second toss of the day.
Elsner came into the event seeded seventh, but was really a two-man show between Jarrett and Elsner. Dubuque's Blaze Murfin was the only competitor to get even close to the two WIAC entrants, placing third with a mark of 64-4.50. All four of Elsner's marked throws (he fouled on his final two attempts) exceeded 64-feet. Elsner's shortest throw of the day, 64-2, would have placed third.
Zastrow, a freshman and in his first national competition, made his way to the awards stand with a fifth place finish. Zastrow vaulted 16-feet, 0.75-inches among the 15-member field. Junior
Josh Freyholtz finished 12th with a near season-high jump of 15-7.Â
Elsner will compete Saturday, March 10 in the shot put, an event he is the top seed.
