2018 WIAC Track and Field Championship (Men's results follow women's results)
STEVENS POINT (February 24, 2018) - That UW-Stout's
Sam Elsner was going to win a medal was pretty much a given, but several Blue Devils performers earned their first individual conference medals on the final day of the 2018 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Track and Field Championship Saturday at UW-Stevens Point. As a team, Stout finished seventh.
Elsner finished second in the weight throw with a mark of 61-feet, 9.75-inches, win his second conference medal, coming on the heels of a shot put championship a day earlier. UW-La Crosse's Andrew Jarrett won the event with a distance of 63-10.50. Stout's
Anton Proksch finished ninth, just missing out of making his second podium trip in this year's championship, finishing ninth (53-2.75).
Sophomores
Isaac Lee and
Spencer Wilhelm finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the triple jump to climb onto the awards podium for the first time. Lee cleared 45-feet for the first time, getting a mark of 45-0.25. Wilhelm marked a distance of 43-11.25.
Mike Friedman earned his first indoor conference medal, placing fourth in the 3000-meter run in a time of 8:40.16. Friedman had earned an outdoor medal last season in the 10,000-meter.
Noah Zastrow took home two medals in his first indoor championship. The freshman had finished fifth Friday in the pole vault and on Saturday, took home a sixth place finish in the heptathlon, tallying 4640 points.
Andrew Gilles, who has collected several medals as part of relay teams the last two years, earned his first individual medal with a seventh place finish in the 800-meter run, clocking a time of 1;57.13.
Freshman
Cody Lohrenz placed eighth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.76. Fellow freshman
Brent Heilman was just out of the medals, placing 10th (22.80).
Josh Freyholtz placed 18th in the triple jump (41-3). Wilhelm was 14th in the high jump (5-10.75).
Duncan Magerl was 15th in the weight throw (50-6.75).Â
Jake Houghton was 18th in the 800m (2:00.05).
Ross Thompson was 14th int he 200m (22.96).
Stout had seven competitors in the 3000-meter, led by Friedman. Joe Van Grinsven was 16th (8:52.41),
Michael Fifield was 17th (8:53.25),
Tyler Ellefson 18th (8:54.02),
Trevor Blum 20th (8:54.86),
Zach Zimmerman 21st (8:56.76) and
Nick Zolondek 23rd (9:11.94). The 4x400-meter relay team of Lohrenz, Thompson, Gilles and
Kody Radtke was seventh (3:27.44).
Duncan Magerl was selected to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
The Blue Devils return to Stevens Point next weekend when they participate in the UW-Stevens Point Last Chance Meet.
