WIAC Track and Field Championship First Day results
STEVENS POINT (February 24, 2018) - UW-Stout's
Sam Elsner and
Kaitlin Mallek both won conference titles, Elsner in the men's shot put and Mallek in the women's long jump on the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Track and Field Championship Friday.
Elsner extended his school record by an inch, recording a mark of 58-feet, 2-inches (17.33m), to win his first WIAC title.
Mallek came up just one inch short of the school record when she jumped to a distance of 18-7 to record her first conference title. Mallek had quite a day.
In first day preliminary action,
Kaitlin Mallek held onto her top seed in the 60-meter dash, leading the field with a school record time of 7.72 seconds, breaking her own two-year-old mark of 7.75.Â
And In the shot put, Elsner shot past UW-Eau Claire's David Kornacki, who is ranked second nationally in the shot put. Kornacki extended his personal best with a toss of 54-5.50. The Blue Devils'
Anton Proksch scored a personal best finishing third in the shot put to earn his second WIAC medal with a mark of 52-0.75.
Stephanie Pladies and
Raelin Sorensen placed second and third in the high jump, despite clearing the same height as champion Sarah Glidden of UW-Eau Claire. The top five finishers cleared 5-4.25, but the group was placed first through fifth according to jumps.
Jessica Petruzates placed fourth in the 5000-meter run with a personal-best time of 18:09.92.
Molly Perkins was 20th (19:31.24),
Madeleine Ozan was 24th (19:51.47) and
Sylvia Lechnir was 25th (20:05.44).
The distance medley team of
Andrew Gilles,
Cody Lohrenz,
Jake Houghton and Mike Fifield earned second team all-conference honors with a time of 10:21.85 minutes.
Trevor Blum placed sixth in the 5000-meter run to lead six Blue Devil runners. Blum finished in a time of 15:17.35.
Dan Ressler was seventh (15:17.41),
Mike Friedman (15:26.19),
Tyler Ellefson 10th (15:27.33), Nick Zolendek 16th (15:45.30) and
Zach Zimmerman 20th (16:06.82).
Josh Freyholtz placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 22-9.75.
Alex Grulkowski, who is also competing in the heptathlon, placed 16th in the long jump (20-10.50).
Heather Beecher placed sixth in the pole vault with a career-high mark of 11-9. Jenna Myrho was 12th (10-9) and
Sierra Coonts 18th (10-3.25).
Demi Ploor and
Jillian Holt no-heighted the event.
Noah Zastrow placed fifth in the pole vault (15-7.50) and Freyholtz was eighth with the same height.
Christian Lucchesi, competing in his first meet of the season, placed 10th (15-1.50).
Robert Mesenburg was 15th (14-7.50).
Jack Kolar no-heighted.
Freshman
Ash Patterson found her way to the podium in her first collegiate conference meet, placing fifth in the shot put with a mark of 41-1.50.
Demi Ploor just missed the podium, finishing ninth (39-8.50).
Kami Sawtelle was 13th (38-8.75),
Emma Wittliff 15th (38-6.25),
Taylor Baker 20th (37-3.75) and
Kayla Pabst 26th (34-5.75).
Tymesia McFadden advanced to the finals of the 60-meter by placing eighth with a time of 7.97.
Davia Clarke placed 20th (8.23) and
Nikki Nelson 21st (8.24).
In other preliminary action, freshman
Cody Lohrenz will compete in his first conference final after finishing third in the preliminaries of 400-meter in a time of 50.15.
Ross Thompson finished 12th (51.30).
Shanna Laehn advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles by placing sixth in a time of 9.24 seconds.
Miranda Scholten was 16th (10.11).Â
Brent Heilman placed 19th in the men's 60-meter dash (7.23).
The women's distance medley relay team of
Brittany Staab,
Emma Bullard,
Raelin Sorensen and
Katie Repka placed seventh (12:44.44).
