Men's Basketball Preview: Blue Devils travel to Platteville Saturday

THIS WEEK'S GAMES:  The Blue Devils (7-11, 1-6 WIAC) begin the second loop of WIAC play by traveling to UW-Platteville (15-3, 5-2 WIAC), Saturday, Jan. 27 for a 7 p.m. contest.

At Wednesday night's game, there is a chance to win $7,500 by making a series of shots.  Enter your name in the drawing and the only restriction is you can't have played or coached basketball at the collegiate level. 

The Saturday game at Platteville is a "Garding Against Cancer" event. The Blue Devils participated in the same type of event leading up to and including an early season exhibition game against the University of Wisconsin in November. Brothers Jeff Gard of Platteville and Greg Gard of Wisconsin established the foundation after their father passed away from cancer.

PARKING: Parking on the UW-Stout campus is restricted during the business week. For games in Johnson Fieldhouse during the week, please plan to park in Lot 29. Do not park in Lot 4, which is a reserved lot for students that live in the residence halls.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
  • The Blue Devils are getting double-digit scoring from four players, with seniors Isaac Elliott and Sam Ortmann leading the way. Elliott is averaging 15.6 points per game with Ortmann tossing in 12.0 points. Elliott is averaging 3.9 rebounds and Ortmann 3.7. Elliott is third in the WIAC in scoring and Ortmann is 15th. Elliott is fourth in the WIAC in 3-pointers made, dropping in 39 of 88 long-range shots.  Junior Zach Dahl is averaging 10.3 points per contest and shares the team lead with Joe Duty in rebounds with 4.2. Dahl is second in the WIAC in free throw percentage, scoring 56 of 67 charity shots, shooing 83.6 percent from the line. Freshman Joe Duty is averaging 11.1 points, tops of all freshmen in the WIAC. The Blue Devils are averaging 70.9 points per game and are giving up 72.6.
  • The Blue Devils return nine players from last year's roster: John Keefe (Sr, Medford), Sam Ortmann (Sr, Buffalo, Minn), Keegan Dickson (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn), Isaac Elliott (Sr, Stevens Point), Adam Mackey (Sr, Ironwood, Mich), Zach Dahl (Jr, Buffalo, Minn), Brandyn Christman (Sr, Rice Lake), Peyton Fulkerson (So, Lodi) and Tanner Schmitt (So, Coon Valley). But Stout's leading scorer from the last two year, Keefe, was knocked out for the season in the season-opener.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
  • UW-Stout fought back from a 10 point deficit and took a 57-56 lead in the waning seconds, but UW-La Crosse's Milton Cummings buried a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired and the Eagles carried a 59-57 win out of Johnson Fieldhouse Wednesday.The Blue Devils grabbed their first conference win of the season when they defeated UW-Eau Claire, 65-51, Jan. 17. Stout lost at UW-River Falls, 96-68, Jan. 20.

  • Joe Duty scored a game-high 23 points but UW-River Falls raced out to a 12-point halftime lead on their way to a 96-68 victory over the Blue Devils, Jan. 20. Duty scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the first half, including the Blue Devils' first five points of the game.
  • The Blue Devils, fresh off their first conference win earlier in the week, were outscored 42-29 in the first half as the Falcons shot 58.3 percent from the floor, hitting 14 of 24 shots. River Falls stayed hot in the second half, finishing 56.4 percent (32-57) for the game.

  • UW-Stout's Isaac Elliott scored 21 points and led four Blue Devils in double-digit scoring in a 65-51 win over UW-Eau Claire, Jan. 17. Sam Ortmann wrapped up the night with 15 points, 11 in the second half. Keegan Dickson came off the bench to play 29 minutes and scored 13 points. Zach Dahl finished with 12 points. As indicative by Elliott's work, the free throw line was very friendly to the Blue Devils, who made 20 of 24 shots. The Blugolds did not have near as many trips to the line, making 3 of 5 free throws. Stout held a decided advantage off the boards, pulling down 38 rebounds to Eau Claire's 26. Stout guard Joe Duty collected a career-best 11 rebounds. Dahl and Ortmann each had seven boards.

ACTIVE DUTY
  • Freshman Joe Duty scored 23 points in a loss to UW-River Falls Jan. 20, the third game this year he has scored 20 or more points. Duty has eight times scored in double digits and in a win over UW-Eau Claire, Jan. 17, the lanky guard pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds. Duty has scored at least two points in every game this season and has started the last 16 games. In Duty's first start on Nov. 17, he tossed in 21 points and recorded six rebounds against Marian University. Duty is 65 of 139 from the floor (.468), 21 of 53 from 3-point range (.396) and 40 of 50 from the free throw line (.800).

PERFECTION
  • Isaac Elliott hit 10 of 10 free throws in the Blue Devils' 65-51 win over UW-Eau Claire, Jan. 17, tying him for the school record in free throw percentage in a single game. Elliott was 4 of 4 in the first half, and 6 of 6 in the second half, including four in the final 1:19 of the game. Cal Glover sank all 16 free throw attempts against UW-Superior during the 1970-71 season. Duke Severson was 12 of 12 against Augsburg during the 1959-60 season. Nate Templer hit all 11 of his attempts against UW-La Crosse, Feb. 12, 2003.
CLEANING THE GLASS
  • When the Blue Devils pulled down 57 rebounds in a 96-86 loss to the University of Puget Sound, Dec. 30, in Spokane, Wash, it was the most rebounds by a Stout team since Nov. 24, 2012, when they yanked down 56 against Northland College in the opening game of the UW-Stout Turkey Shootout. Against Puget Sound, Isaac Elliott recorded a career-best 10 rebounds. Zach Dahl yanked down nine boards, which would have been a career-best but the junior guard had recorded a collegiate-best 11 boards the previous night with 11 caroms. Joe Duty also had a career-best against Puget Sound with eight rebounds.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES
  • The Blue Devils had recorded only one double-double coming into the Whitworth University Classic, but racked up a pair of doubles, once in each game. Zach Dahl tossed in 15 points and recorded a career-best 11 rebounds against host Whitworth, Dec. 29. The following night, fellow guard Isaac Elliott recorded his first career double-double, scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds against Puget Sound, Dec. 30.

SCOUTING UW-LA CROSSE
  • The Eagles knocked off UW-River Falls, 62-54, a week ago, then were tipped by UW-Whitewater, 67-64, in overtime Saturday, Jan. 20. La Crosse's only other conference win came in the conference opener when they defeated UW-Eau Claire, 57-56, in Eau Claire. With the exception of the win over Eau Claire, the Eagles have scored in the 60s of all of their conference games.  The Eagles are getting 14.4 points from Ben Meinholz, ranking eighth in the WIAC. Taulvish McCray, Brendon Manning and Tanner Bruchs are all averaging 9.1 points. Manning is fourth in the league in rebounds with 7.0. The Eagles lead the league in steals (9.24) and Meinholz is a big reason why. After leading the conference in 2016-17 in steals, Meinholz is back at it, leading the league with 2.79 thefts per contest.

THE EAGLES LAST TIME OUT
  • La Crosse fell in overtime 67-64 to second-ranked UW-Whitewater Jan. 20 in Mitchell Hall. The game featured 27 lead changes and 12 ties, but both teams struggled from the field in the first half.  La Crosse and Whitewater combined to go 4-of-24 from three-point range, and 14-of-50 overall from the field. The Eagles' Tanner Bruchs was fouled and hit one-of-two free throws to put the Eagles ahead 56-54, with :08 to go.  Andre Brown was fouled with :03 on the clock, and hit both free throws to tie the game at 56-56.
  • In the extra period, La Crosse led 62-60 with 2:16 to play, but Whitewater scored the next six points to pull ahead 66-62 with :17 remaining.  Brendon Manning's jumper pulled the Eagles to within two points at 66-64 with :09 left.  Dalton Menke hit one-of-two free throws at the other end to put the Warhawks up 67-64 with :07 to go.  Bruchs three was off the mark as time expired and UW-Whitewater held on for the win.

THE LAST TIME LA CROSSE AND STOUT MET
  • After UW-Stout's Jacob Nordstrom tied the score at 10 apiece in the first half, UW-La Crosse went off on a 17-4 run over the next five minutes and the Eagles went on to a 77-52 win Feb. 17, 2017, at Mitchell Hall.The Blue Devils trailed 44-21 at halftime and played relatively even with the Eagles  in the second half.  Stout got as close as 17 points after the break. John Lahti had another big night at the net for the Blue Devils, dropping 18 points. John Keefe added 10 points for Stout.
  • The Eagles' Kenny Finco led all scorers with 21 points. Ben Meinholz and Zach Schradle scored double-doubles, with Meinholz scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds and Schradle finishing with 12 points and matching Meinholz's 11 boards. The Eagles out rebounded Stout 44-28. The Blue Devils shot 34.5 percent (20-58) from the floor, while the Eagles shot 50 percent (30-60) from the floor.

SCOUTING UW-PLATTEVILLE
  • The Pioneers currently have the top scoring offense and the top defense in the WIAC. Platteville is averaging 79.1 points per game and are giving up 63.3 points and have carried that distinction since the beginning of the conference season. The Pioneers conference losses have come at the hands of UW-River Falls and conference leader UW-Stevens Point.  Robert Duax leads the team in scoring at 1489 points Matt Oestreich is averaging 10.7 points and Carter Voelker 10.5 Freshman Quentin Shields is averaging 9.1 points per game. Clay Gerds leads the team off the glass, pulling down 5.4 caroms per game.

THE PIONEERS LAST TIME OUT
  • UW-Platteville went on the road and earned perhaps its most impressive win of the season, knocking off eighth-ranked UW-Whitewater 84-67 Wednesday. The Pioneers, who received votes in this week's d3hoops.com poll, improved to 15-3 overall and 5-2 in league play. Coach Jeff Gard's club moved within a game of first-place UW-Stevens Point, who fell 68-53 at UW-Oshkosh. The hot-shooting Pioneers made 62 percent of their shots (31-50) while leading from start to finish.  UW-Platteville scored the first eight points and went up 23-9, eventually leading 37-24 at the half.  The Warhawks, who made just 7-28 shots in the first half, cut the deficit to 41-31in the first 2:25 of the first half. Matt Oestreich (six points) and Carter Voelker (four) led the Pioneers on a 10-0 run for a 51-31 advantage.

  • In a battle for first place among the heavyweights in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, host UW-Stevens Point topped UW-Platteville 80-74 Jan. 20. The last undefeated team in conference play, UWSP used a 12-6 closing run to break a tie and claim the victory. Canon O-Heron's layup with 1:58 remaining gave the Pointers the lead for good at 68-66. Drew Fredrickson's three-point basket with 38 seconds left was a back-breaker for the Pioneers, as UWSP forged a 73-67 lead. The Pioneers' Carter Voelker brought the Pioneers within 79-74 with 14 seconds left, but MJ Delmore made 1-2 free throws with 10 ticks remaining to seal the deal..

THE LAST TIME PLATTEVILLE AND STOUT MET
  • UW-Stout was forced to play catch-up all night long as UW-Platteville gave the Blue Devils a 73-54 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) conference-opening loss at Johnson Fieldhouse Jan. 3. The Blue Devils trailed from the get-go and trailed by as much as 13 points midway through the first hal, but pulled the score back to within seven, 32-25, just before halftime. Platteville score the final seven points of the half to take a 39-25 halftime lead. Zach Dahl led Stout with 14 points, going 5 of 9 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the line. Adam Mackey scored 11 points, including one of Stout's three 3-point baskets.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Joe Duty, Fr, Adams, Wis. (Adams-Friendship)

AWARDS AND HONORS: 2017-18: Senior Isaac Elliott was selected as the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week, Jan. 8, after scoring 22 points against UW-Stevens Point...Freshman Joe Duty was selected as the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week, Dec. 12, after scoring 19 points in a win over Finlandia University. Duty also had five assists in a win at Silver Lake College....

BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.




UW-STOUT COACH EDDIE ANDRIST
  • Eddie Andrist (210-242 at Stout, 460-433 overall) is in his 18th year as the coach of the Blue Devils, and his 29th overall in the collegiate ranks.
  • Andrist led the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Division III appearance six seasons ago when Stout advanced to the second round.
  • Andrist coached at Mount Senario for 11 seasons and won three national championships.
  • Andrist spent two stints as a UW-Stout assistant, first as a student coach in the 1970s, then again during the 1980s.
  • Andrist spent two stints coaching international basketball, working with the country of Qatar

UW-LA CROSSE:
  • Kent Dernbach (18-12 overall; 10-7 at La Crosse) is in his first season with the Eagles. Dernbach served as the interim coach last season at UW-Stevens Point and came to La Crosse in October. Dernbach was the associate head coach at Stevens Point since 2011, prior to coming to La Crosse.

UW-PLATTEVILLE:
  • Jeff Gard (129-98) is in his ninth year at UW-Platteville. He was named the 13th head coach in Pioneer history on June 9, 2009, after serving as an assistant with the Pioneers for the previous six seasons including his final two as the associate head coach.   Within a short amount of time Gard made history by winning 64 games in his first four seasons at the helm of the Pioneers, the most in school history in a coach's first four years. Gard is known not only for his work on the court but also within the community for his generous efforts of being a servant leader.  Whether it be though his teams community service within the Tri-State are or his newest adventure in the fight against cancer, Coach Gard is doing his best to assist those in need.  His family's most recent adventure has taken place in "Garding Against Cancer" and the "Iowa County Cancer Coalition", to help with the fight against cancer right within the state of Wisconsin. All money raised remains in Wisconsin — working to find a cure, advance treatment options, and promote the welfare of patients.



CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. UW-River Falls is projected to win the conference crown, according to a preseason poll conducted by WIAC coaches and sports information directors, followed by: UW-Whitewater; UW-Oshkosh; UW-Eau Claire; UW-Stevens Point; UW-Platteville; UW-La Crosse; and UW-Stout.


DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.

UP NEXT: The Blue Devils will be at UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Jan. 31 for an 8 p.m. start in the second half of a doubleheader with the women's programs. The Blue Devils return home for Alumni Day, Saturday, Feb. 3, when they host UW-Whitewater.
