THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (6-6, 0-1 WIAC) will play conference games the rest of the way, and are coming off a loss to UW-Platteville in the conference opener Wednesday. The Blue Devils will host UW-Stevens Point, (7-5, 1-0 WIAC) Saturday, Jan. 6 at 3 p.m. The Pointers snapped a three game losing streak when they rolled past No. 3 UW-River Falls, 73-48, in the conference opener Wednesday. The Pointers' three previous losses were to top 15 ranked teams, including a 77-64 loss to top ranked Whitman College. For the second game in a row, the Blue Devils will have to deal with the 3-pointer. Stevens Point is the top-ranked team in the WIAC in 3-pointers made, dropping in an average of 9.5 per game.
Conference action gets underway with a pair of home games when they host a hot UW-Platteville, (10-1, 0-0 WIAC) team Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. The Pioneers come into Wednesday's game on a seven-game winning streak, with their only loss of the season an 84-71 decision to Carleton College, Nov. 24, at the Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo. Both Stout and Platteville have scored 80 points or more in three of their last four games.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
- The Blue Devils are getting double-digit scoring from four players, with seniors Isaac Elliott and Sam Ortmann leading the way. Elliott, who got his first career double-double recently, is averaging 15.1 points per game with Ortmann tossing in 12.7 points. Both are averaging 3.8 rebounds. Elliott is fifth in the WIAC in scoring and Ortmann is 13th. Elliott is fifth in the WIAC in 3-pointers made, dropping in 25 of 59 long-range shots. Ortmann is 11th in the league, hitting 17 of 35. Ortmann is currently the league's ironman, leading the league in minutes played at 32.0 per contest. Junior Zach Dahl has made eight starts this season and is averaging 10.8 points per contest and leads the team in rebounds with 4.7. Dahl has scored in double-digits (17, 15, 13, 14) the last four games and has scored in double digits in seven games this season. Dahl last season saw limited action in eight games, averaging 0.4 points, scoring three total points. Dahl currently has 129 total points. Freshman Joe Duty has started the last 11 games and is averaging 10.0 points, tops of all freshmen in the WIAC. The Blue Devils are averaging 75.1 points per game and are giving up 72.9.
- The Blue Devils return nine players from last year's roster: John Keefe (Sr, Medford), Sam Ortmann (Sr, Buffalo, Minn), Keegan Dickson (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn), Isaac Elliott (Sr, Stevens Point), Adam Mackey (Sr, Ironwood, Mich), Zach Dahl (Jr, Buffalo, Minn), Brandyn Christman (Sr, Rice Lake), Peyton Fulkerson (So, Lodi) and Tanner Schmitt (So, Coon Valley). But Stout's leading scorer from the last two year, Keefe, was knocked out for the season in the season-opener.
- Stout was picked to finish eighth in a 2017-18 preseason poll conducted by WIAC coaches and sports information directors
BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- UW-Stout was forced to play catch-up all night long as UW-Platteville gave the Blue Devils a 73-54 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) loss at Johnson Fieldhouse Wednesday.
- The Blue Devils trailed from the get-go and trailed by as much as 13 points midway through the first half, but pulled the score back to within seven, 32-25, just before halftime. Platteville scored the final seven points of the half to take a 39-25 halftime lead.
- Zach Dahl led Stout with 14 points, going 5 of 9 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the line. Adam Mackey scored 11 points, including one of Stout's three 3-point baskets.
- UW-Stout went west and dropped a pair of games at the Whitworth University Classic, falling to the seventh-ranked host, 79-71, Dec. 29, and getting tripped up by the University of Puget Sound, 96-86, the following night.
- Zach Dahl recorded his first career double-double in the loss to Whitworth, scoring 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Joe Duty led Stout with 16 points and Isaac Elliott had 10 points.
- Against the high-flying Loggers the following night, it was Elliott's turn to record his first double-double, dropping in 20 points and finishing with 10 rebounds. Sam Ortmann led Stout with 21 points. The Blue Devils pulled down 57 rebounds, the most rebounds by a Stout team since Nov. 24, 2012, when they yanked down 56 against Northland College to open the UW-Stout Turkey Shootout.
CLEANING THE GLASS
- When the Blue Devils pulled down 57 rebounds in a 96-86 loss to the University of Puget Sound, Dec. 30, in Spokane, Wash, it was the most rebounds by a Stout team since Nov. 24, 2012, when they yanked down 56 against Northland College in the opening game of the UW-Stout Turkey Shootout. Against Puget Sound, Isaac Elliott recorded a career-best 10 rebounds. Zach Dahl yanked down nine boards, which would have been a career-best but the junior guard had recorded a collegiate-best 11 boards the previous night with 11 caroms. Joe Duty also had a career-best against Puget Sound with eight rebounds.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES
- The Blue Devils had recorded only one double-double coming into the Whitworth University Classic, but racked up a pair of doubles, once in each game. Zach Dahl tossed in 15 points and recorded a career-best 11 rebounds against host Whitworth, Dec. 29. The following night, fellow guard Isaac Elliott recorded his first career double-double, scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds against Puget Sound, Dec. 30.
HOMEBODIES
- With the exception of two games between Christmas and New Years, UW-Stout does not play a game out of state this season. Stout plays teams from Minnesota, Michigan and Colorado at home this year. Stout does travel to Washington state to play Whitworth University, Dec. 29, and Puget Sound, Dec. 30. Stout has 13 home games in Johnson Fieldhouse this season. Last season, Stout played four games, plus one exhibition game, out of state.

SCOUTING UW-PLATTEVILLE
- The Pioneers currently have the top scoring offense and the top defense in the WIAC. Platteville is averaging 81.7 points per game and are giving up 60.4 points. The Pioneers are not afraid to shoot from beyond the arc, averaging 9.18 3-pointers made, second only to UW-Stevens Point, Stout's opponent Saturday. The Pioneers' 3-pointers are very balanced, with 16 players recording at least one 3-pointers. Carter Voelker, who is averaging 9.0 points per contest, has dropped in 16 of 26 treys., while leading scorer Robert Duax, with 14.3 ppg, has scored 13 of 32 bombs. Jake Schowalter his hit 13 of 26, Alex Ranney and Trey Siegel has come off the bench to each record 10 3-pointers. Freshman Quentin Shields and Matt Oestreich are each averaging 8.9 points per game. Clay Gerds leads the team off the glass, pulling down 4.7 caroms per game and Duax is right behind at 4.5. The Pioneers are receiving votes in the Jan. 1 D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll.
THE PIONEERS LAST TIME OUT
- Showing little rust after a nearly two-week break from games, UW-Platteville raced past Ripon College 78-58 Friday night in the Just A Game Classic in Wisconsin Dells. Carter Voelker scored 21 points, Matt Oestreich had 12, and three others scored eight apiece.
- Hot-shooting Platteville scored 42 points in each half and beat St. Mary's 84-60 Dec. 30 in the Just A Game Classic in Wisconsin Dells. Robert Duax made 12-16 from the field and scored a game-high 27 points for the Pioneers, who shot 55 percent from the field. Clay Gerds scored 17 points, and Carter Voelker added 13. Fifteen Pioneers saw game action and nine scored.

THE LAST TIME PLATTEVILLE AND STOUT MET
- Jacob Nordstrom scored a career-best 19 points as UW-Stout defeated UW-Platteville, 73-70, Jan. 28, 2017, at Bo Ryan Court. Nordstrom snapped his career-best in the first half when he scored 13 points before intermission. The Blue Devil big man was 8-of-11 for the evening from the floor and dropped in three free throws. The Blue Devils took a 38-29 lead into the halftime locker room. The Pioneers charged back to take as much as a four point lead in the second half, but the game went back and forth with 10 tied scores in the second half. Two free throws by John Keefe with 10 seconds remaining proved to be the margin of victory for Stout.
- Stout staved off UW-Platteville to get their first conference win of the season, Jan. 4, 2017, in Menomonie. The win snapped a 34-game WIAC losing streak for the Blue Devils, which began in the 2013-14 season. Senior Corey Speer led the Blue Devils with 21 points, 17 in the first half, shooting 5-of-6 from three point range. As a team, Stout shot 54 percent from the arc.

SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT
- The Pointers are getting 15.3 points from Nate Dodge and 10.8 points from MJ Delmore. Dodge has started the last two games and has come off the bench in nine games. Dodge leads the WIAC in 3-pointers made, banking in 3.25 treys per contest. Dodge is 39 of 76 (.513) from 3-point range. The Pointers lead the WIAC in 3-pointers made, averaging 9.5 per game. Brett Tauber is leading the team off the boards, pulling down 6.1 boards, and had a season-high 13 points against UW-River Falls Wednesday. The Pointers are averaging 69.0 points and giving up 65.3 points.
THE POINTERS LAST TIME OUT
- Stevens Point hung with No. 1 Whitman in a 77-64 loss at the D3Hoops Classic to close out play in 2017, Dec. 30. The 77 points scored by Whitman were the second-fewest for the Blues on the season. Junior Nate Dodge and senior MJ Delmore poured in double-digit points with 14 and 13, respectively. They each had five rebounds and three assists in the game., Dec. 29, 2017
- Stevens Point men's basketball team closed to within five points late, but could not complete the comeback in a 75-66 loss to No. 13 Wartburg at the D3Hoops Classic on Dec. 28, 2017. Junior Nate Dodge led UWSP with 17 points. He had four boards to go with two assists and a steal. Senior MJ Delmore was also in double figures with 15 points. He grabbed five rebounds and had a steal.
- Stevens Point out-scored No. 3 UW-River Falls by a 37-11 margin over the final 15 minutes of the first half to pull away for a 73-48 victory in the league opener on Wednesday.
- Junior Mark Nelson led four Pointers in double figures with 18 points.  He was a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 at the free throw stripe.
- Fellow junior Nate Dodge poured in 12 points on 2-of-3 shooting from three-point range. Canon O'Heron and Koko Songolo each scored 10 points, a career-high for both players. Brett Tauber grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds for the Pointers.
THE LAST TIME STEVENS POINT AND STOUT MET
- UW-Stout fell into an early 10 point hole that they couldn't escape as UW-Stevens Point took a road victory, 76-64, in Johnson Fieldhouse on Alumni Day, Feb. 11, 2017. The Blue Devils were led by John Keefe who scored all 15 of his points in the second half.
- UW-Stout recovered from a 15-point deficit midway through the second half to put themselves back into contention, but the Blue Devils lost their first conference game of the season, 71-68, to UW-Stevens Point Wednesday at Bennett Court, Jan. 11, 2017

AWARDS AND HONORS: 2017-18: Freshman
Joe Duty was selected as the UW-Stout/Toppers Athlete of the Week, Dec. 12, after scoring 19 points in a win over Finlandia University. Duty also had five assists in a win at Silver Lake College.
BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.
UW-STOUT COACH EDDIE ANDRIST
- Eddie Andrist (206-237 at Stout, 456-428 overall) is in his 18th year as the coach of the Blue Devils, and his 29th overall in the collegiate ranks.
- Andrist led the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Division III appearance six seasons ago when Stout advanced to the second round.
- Andrist coached at Mount Senario for 11 seasons and won three national championships.
- Andrist spent two stints as a UW-Stout assistant, first as a student coach in the 1970s, then again during the 1980s.
- Andrist spent two stints coaching international basketball, working with the country of Qatar
UW-PLATTEVILLE:
- Jeff Gard (125-96) is in his ninth year at UW-Platteville. He was named the 13th head coach in Pioneer history on June 9, 2009, after serving as an assistant with the Pioneers for the previous six seasons including his final two as the associate head coach.  Within a short amount of time Gard made history by winning 64 games in his first four seasons at the helm of the Pioneers, the most in school history in a coach's first four years. Gard is known not only for his work on the court but also within the community for his generous efforts of being a servant leader. Whether it be though his teams community service within the Tri-State are or his newest adventure in the fight against cancer, Coach Gard is doing his best to assist those in need. His family's most recent adventure has taken place in "Garding Against Cancer" and the "Iowa County Cancer Coalition", to help with the fight against cancer right within the state of Wisconsin. All money raised remains in Wisconsin — working to find a cure, advance treatment options, and promote the welfare of patients.

UW-STEVENS POINT:
- Bob Semling (269-76) is in his 13th season at the helm UW-Stevens Point. In 12 seasons at UW-Stevens Point, Semling has led the Pointers to two NCAA Division III national championships (2010, 2015), in addition to being an assistant on the back-to-back national championship teams of 2004 and 2005.
CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. UW-River Falls is projected to win the conference crown, according to a preseason poll conducted by WIAC coaches and sports information directors, followed by: UW-Whitewater; UW-Oshkosh; UW-Eau Claire; UW-Stevens Point; UW-Platteville; UW-La Crosse; and UW-Stout.
DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.
