A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
- The Blue Devils are off to a 2-1 start after going 1-1 at their own UW-Stout Tip-Off Tournament, Nov. 17-18, downing Marian University, 84-77, but falling in overtime, 82-80, to Colorado College in the tournament championship game.
- Isaac Elliott has been in double digits in all three games this season and set a new career-high when he scored 25 points against Colorado College, 21 in the first half, hitting all seven first half shots, including five 3-pointers. Elliott leads the Blue Devils with a 17.7 per game average.
- Brandon Emery scored a double-double in his first Blue Devil appearance. The junior college transfer scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in his UW-Stout debut against Crown College, Nov. 15. Against Colorado College, Emery sent the game into overtime with his layup with less than a second left on the clock. Emery is averaging 13.7 points and has a team-high 5.0 rebounds.
- Freshman Joe Duty scored 21 points the win over Marian University and played 34 minutes. Duty started against Marian University and Colorado College and has played more than 20 minutes in the first three games of the season.
- Senior Sam Ortmann scored a career-best 23 points against Crown College. Ortmann averages 14.7 points, second on the team behind Elliott.
- Stout was picked to finish eighth in a 2017-18 preseason poll conducted by WIAC coaches and sports information directors
- As a team, the Blue Devils are averaging 81.0 points per game. They are shooting .483 (84-174) as a team.
- The Blue Devils return nine players from last year's roster: John Keefe (Sr, Medford), Sam Ortmann (Sr, Buffalo, Minn), Keegan Dickson (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn), Isaac Elliott (Sr, Stevens Point), Adam Mackey (Sr, Ironwood, Mich), Zach Dahl (Jr, Buffalo, Minn), Brandyn Christman (Sr, Rice Lake), Peyton Fulkerson (So, Lodi) and Tanner Schmitt (So, Coon Valley).
- Stout was picked to finish eighth in a 2017-18 preseason poll conducted by WIAC coaches and sports information directors
A LOOK BACK AT LAST SEASON
- John Keefe scored in double figures in 19 of 26 games, and scored a career-high 32 against former WIAC foe UW-Superior in November. Keefe dished off at least two assists in every game and had four or more assists in 16 games.
- John Keefe led Stout in all major categories, including points per game (15.0), rebounds/game (6.2), assists/game (4.6), steals/game (1.5), and minutes/game (35.5). Keefe was fifth in the WIAC in points, fourth in rebounds and first in assists and minutes/game. In addition, Keefe had top six statistical finishes in the conference in free throw percentage (.828, 6th), 3-point field goals made (2.15, 5th) and assist/turnover ratio (2.38, 2nd). Keefe was a WIAC all-conference honorable mention selection.
- For Keefe's career, he has 873 points, ranking him 37th on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list. His 391 single season point total from last season is 31st on the Stout single season list. Keefe is 14th on the all-time assist board with 251 and is ninth on the number of 3-pointers made, going 133-355 for his career.
- Sam Ortmann was second on the team in minutes at 29.6 per game, and is a consistent scoring option, getting 7.9 per game and shooting 46 percent.
- The Blue Devils averaged 69.1 points per game and gave up 73.0.
- Stout finished the 2016-17 season at 13-13 overall, 4-10 for seventh in the conference and advanced to the first round of the WIAC tournament where they lost to UW-Whitewater, 78-69

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- The Blue Devils defeated Crown College, 79-75, in the season opener, Nov. 15. Stout downed Marian University, 84-77, in the first game of the UW-Stout Tip-Off Tournament, Nov. 17, then lost in overtime, 82-80, to Colorado College.
- Colorado College came out hot, but UW-Stout's Isaac Elliott proved to be even hotter as the Blue Devils overcame an early large deficit, only to lose to the Tigers, 82-80, in overtime Saturday at Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse in the championship game of the UW-Stout Tip-Off Tournament.
- The Tigers shot lights out to open the game, running out to an 18-0 lead, hitting 7-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Meanwhile, Stout missed their first five shots and did not score until Elliott hit a pair of free throws at 13:10 of the first half.
- But once Elliott tasted points, he went to the well often. Elliott would score 21 points in the first half, hitting all seven of first half shots, including five 3-pointers and the two free throws. Elliott provided the inspiration as the Blue Devils recovered to take a 35-33 halftime lead.
- Freshman Joe Duty led four UW-Stout players in double figures, scoring 21 points, as the Blue Devils defeated Marian University, 84-77, Friday in the opening round of the UW-Stout Tip-Off Tournament.
- Playing without their leading scorer for almost the entire game, UW-Stout found a way to win the season opener, downing Crown College, 79-75, Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
SCOUTING ST. SCHOLASTICA
- The Saints will look to make a third-straight UMAC tournament championship appearance, but will be positioned to take the title with the return of several key players. Brandon Newman returns for his junior season after being named All-UMAC First Team a year ago. Newman was fifth in conference scoring at 17.6 points per game (ppg), and shot an impressive 50.5 percent from the field. He was also third in free-throw conversion (83.3 percent). Newman is the lone returning All-UMAC player, but Zach Dahlman joins for his senior season after scoring 7.8 ppg, as does Collin Anderson who had a solid rookie season and exploded for 36 points off the bench in the tournament title game hitting four 3-pointers in overtime.
THE SAINTS LAST TIME OUT
- The Saints lost a pair of games to open the season and will host St. Thomas, Tuesday, Nov. 21 to open the home portion of their schedule.
WHEN STOUT AND ST. SCHOLASTICA LAST MET
- Trailing at halftime, UW-Stout went on a 13-4 run to open the second half and went on to a 59-54 win over St. Scholastica in the consolation game of the Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament at St. Norbert College Tuesday.
SCOUTING UW-SUPERIOR
- Superior was picked to finish sixth in a UMAC preseason poll in its first season under new coach Greg Polkowski. Superior notched a 7-18 record last season, including a 6-10 record in the UMAC. The Yellowjackets' top returner is Shaq Coleman , who produced 14 points per game, five rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game last season, earning a UMAC honorable mention nod. The 'Jackets also return top guards Montroy Scott who added 12 ppg and three rebounds, and Nate Kalien, who averaged 7.6 ppg and 40.4 percent from 3-point line.

- Superior won the UW-Stout Tip-Off Tournament consolation championship with a win over Marian University, Nov. 18.

SCOUTING BETHANY LUTHERAN COLLEGE
- The Vikings had a huge turnaround last year moving from sixth to second in the UMAC standings under new head coach Matt Fletcher. The Vikings lose player of the year Brandyn Frelix, but welcome back two honorable mention selections in Neil Eichten and Brady Rose who averaged in double-digit scoring last year. They return a total of four starters and eight of 10 players in last year's rotation. Austin Bauer also started all 26 games for the Vikings last year and should be an impact player as well.
THE VIKINGS LAST TIME OUT
- The Vikings were at the Nebraska Wesleyan Tournament, Nov. 24-25, where they faced Carroll University and host Nebraska Wesleyan.

THE LAST TIME BETHANY AND STOUT MET
- UW-Stout held a seven point, 54-47 lead two minutes into the second half, but Bethany Lutheran College came back to tie the score at 16:25 of the second half, then went on a 17-4 run over the next five-and-a-half minutes on their way to a 98-87 over UW-Stout Dec. 5, 2016.
- The Vikings held a 71-58 with 11:42 remaining and allowed the visiting Blue Devils only as close as five points a couple of times down the stretch. The Vikings had five players in double figures, led by Brandyn Frelix's double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds. Neil Eichten added 24 points. The Vikings made one more field goal from the floor and the teams were even in 3-pointers with 14 apiece. The free throw line proved to be much of the difference, with the home team making 18-of-21 while Stout was 9-of-14. Bethany held a big 44-30 advantage off the glass. The Vikings had 34 defensive rebounds to Stout's 19.
- Stout also had five players in double figures, led by Sam Ortmann's 16. John Keefe contributed 13 points. Keegan Dickson added 12 points and Jacob Nordstrom finished with 10 points. Stout shot 43.2 percent (32-74) from the floor and the Vikings finished at 53.2 percent (33-62). Stout was 14-of-37 from beyond the arc, the Vikings 14-of-25. Stout held a slight 47-45 halftime lead lead and took that to a seven point lead early in the second period before Bethany quickly chipped away at that lead, tied the game, then took the 13 point lead and went on to fend off any Blue Devil challenge.
BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.
UW-STOUT COACH EDDIE ANDRIST
- Eddie Andrist (205-233 at Stout, 455-424 overall) is in his 18th year as the coach of the Blue Devils, and his 29th overall in the collegiate ranks.
- Andrist led the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Division III appearance six seasons ago when Stout advanced to the second round.
- Andrist coached at Mount Senario for 11 seasons and won three national championships.
- Andrist spent two stints as a UW-Stout assistant, first as a student coach in the 1970s, then again during the 1980s.
- Andrist spent two stints coaching international basketball, working with the country of Qatar
BETHANY LUTHERAN COACH MATT FLETCHER
- Matt Fletcher enters his second season as the head men's basketball coach at Bethany Lutheran College in 2017-18. Fletcher comes to Bethany after spending three seasons at Upper Iowa (NCAA II) as the associate head coach (2015-16) and an assistant the first two seasons (2013-15). During each of Fletcher's three years with UIU, the Peacocks finished fourth in the South Division of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, winning their first playoff game.
CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. UW-River Falls is projected to win the conference crown, according to a preseason poll conducted by WIAC coaches and sports information directors, followed by: UW-Whitewater; UW-Oshkosh; UW-Eau Claire; UW-Stevens Point; UW-Platteville; UW-La Crosse; and UW-Stout.
DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.
