THIS WEEK'S GAMES:The Blue Devils (10-2, 1-0 WIAC) return home Tuesday, Jan. 3, when they host Silver Lake College, (3-11) at 6:30 p.m., then open WIAC play the following night when they host UW-Platteville (7-4, 0-0 WIAC), Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. Stout will be at conference favorite UW-Oshkosh (8-4, 1-0 WIAC), Saturday, Jan. 7 for a 5 p.m. meeting.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
  • The Blue Devils are off to a 10-2 start, more than doubling last year's wins total (4-20), averaging 76.3 points per game. Stout has scored 80 points or more in eight games so far this year.
  • John Keefe appears in the top 10 of eight WIAC categories - 2nd, scoring 17.8; 5th rebounds, 6.7; 1st, assists, 5.3; 8th, free throw percentage, .820; 2nd, steals, 1.8; 3rd, 3-point FG made, 2.33; 1st, assist/turnover ratio, 3.37; 1st, minutes played, 34.2.
  • After losing their second game of the season to nationally ranked Hope College in November, the Blue Devils have won eighth of their last nine games.
  • John Keefe leads Stout with 17.8 points, followed by fellow guard Cory Speer, who comes off the bench, with 10.5.  Keegan Dickson (8.0), Sam Ortmann (8.8), Braden Walbeck (7.5) and John Lahti (7.3) are all averaging more than seven points.
  • Keefe leads the team in rebounds with 6.7.
  • Transfer Braden Walbeck has been filling up the score sheet lately. The sophomore has scored in double-digits in four of the last six games and is currently averaging 7.5 points.
  • Cory Speer has been coming off the bench to average 10.5 points per game, scoring 21 against Platteville, 17 in the first half..
  • Keegan Dickson has started all 12 games and is averaging 8.0 points. He had drained 20-of-54 3-pointers. Keefe leads the team in 3-pointers (4-80).
  • Sam Ortmann is having his best collegiate season, averaging 8.8 points and is the team's second leading rebounder with 4.8 caroms.
  • The Blue Devils have one of the most balanced scoring attacks in the WIAC. The Blue Devils have six players scoring 7.0 points or better. Only UW-Whitewater has more players, weighing in with seven players topping 7.0 points.
  • Senior center Jacob Nordstrom is averaging 4.5 rebounds and leads the team with 11 blocked shots. Nordstrom has recorded at least four rebounds in each of the last six games and has at least three rebounds in the last nine games
  • Against Dubuque, Keefe recorded Stout's first double-double of the season, rolling the net for 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Keefe finished with eight assists to tease with a triple-double. Keefe connected on a double-double with Silver Lake, racking up 24 points and 15 assists.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
  • UW-Stout put one unwanted streak to rest and extended their winning streak to six with an 82-73 over UW-Platteville, Wednesday. The win ended the Blue Devils' conference losing streak at 34 games.
  • Senior Corey Speer led the Blue Devils with 21 points, 17 in the first half, shooting 5-of-6 from three point range. As a team, Stout shot 54 percent from the arc.
  • Stout took their first lead of the game on Speer's first three pointer, dished from Sam Ortmann, to get ahead 8-7. Stout then rattled off three straight three pointers from Speer and Ortmann, all assisted by John Keefe, to go up 19-13.
    The first half remained tight, but Stout held an average four point lead while the two teams traded baskets. The first half ended with Stout up 39-35 after Platteville's  Dan Lowe hit the layup in the final seconds.
  • The second half was Keefe's time to shine. After not scoring in the first period, he scored 16 to help the get the win. His 16 included a clutch, top of the key, three pointer to put Stout up by five with 1:15 left in the period. Senior Brett Ahsenmacher sealed the game by knocking down a mid-range jumper, assisted by Keefe. Ortmann added two free throws to make the final score 82-73.
  • UW-Platteville Story and Statistics
  • It took a while for Stout to pull away from Silver Lake College, but the Blue Devils took over in the second half and went on to an 87-64 home win over the Lakers Tuesday.
  • John Keefe scored his second double-double of the season, racking up 24 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Keefe flirted with a triple-double, dishing off seven assists.
  • Silver Lake took a short-lived one point lead late in the first half and Stout led at halftime, 35-32. The Lakers tied the game early in the second half, but Stout went on a 19-6 run at about the 11 minute mark to take the game out of question.
  • Isaac Elliott and Cory Speer came off the bench to score 14 and 12 points respectively.
  • Coach Eddie Andrist was able to empty his bench starting with about five minutes remaining.

  • After a 19 day layoff, the Blue Devils swept both games at the JustAGame Classic in Wisconsin Dells, downing Central College, 64-56, and Lawrence University, 74-71, Dec. 29-30 at the JustAGame Fieldhouse.
  • The Blue Devils built up leads in both games, then leaned on their defense to hold off their opponents for the wins.
  • The Blue Devils had seven players get into the scoring column. Against Central, the Blue Devils' John Keefe scored 12 of his team-high 19 points in the second half, while fellow guard Cory Speer scored eight of his 13 points in the second half. Braden Walbeck scored 11 points, all in the first half with eight points in the first six minutes of the game to lead a Stout charge to a quick 12-2 early lead.
  • Stout held a 10-rebound advantage off the glass, pulling down 44 to 34 for Central. Jacob Nordstrom pulled down a game-high and career-best nine rebounds. John Lahti matched Nordstrom with nine rebounds and Keefe had seven rebounds.

  • Stout took advantage at the free throw line and took care of the ball, committing only one turnover, to down Lawrence.
  • The Blue Devils drained 17-of-26 free throws, with Sam Ortmann dropping in 6-of-8 and Walbeck 5-of-7 to key Stout's march to the charity stripe. From the floor, the Blue Devils shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) for the game.
  • The free throws offset Lawrence's 53.7 percent (29-of-54) shooting from the floor. The Vikings made 6-of-12 from the free throw line.
  • Keefe recorded 10 steals, Brett Ahsenmacher and Lahti each got two.

CAREER BESTS
  • The Blue Devils have tallied a number of individual team best scoring this year.
  • John Keefe went off for 32 points against Superior. Keefe pulled down a career-best 15 rebounds against Silver Lake College.
  • Cory Speer lit up Buena Vista for 31.
  • Sam Ortmann scored a best 14 points against Buena Vista, then topped that with a 16 point effort against Bethany Lutheran.
  • Keegan Dickson scored 20 points and Jacob Nordstrom has matched a career high by scoring 10 three times this season.
  • Isaac Elliot tallied 19 points against Robert Morris, 17 in the first half.
  • John Lahti opened the season with a career-best 17 points against UM-Crookston.
  • Sophomore transfer Braden Walbeck ran his career-best up the ladder throughout the season and scored 17 against Dubuque.
  • The 95 team points scored by Stout against UW-Superior was the most by a Blue Devil team since downing Bethel University 95-60, to open the 2010-11 season.
  • The Blue Devils are ranked fourth in the WIAC in scoring (75.8). Stout is third in assists (14.3) and third in steals (7.0). Stout has a league-best turnover margin of plus-3.83, and leads the league in assists/turnover ration (1.54).
  • Stout is outscoring their opponents, 76.3-70.5

THE WIAC
  • While the WIAC is always competitive, could the WIAC be stronger this year than in the past? If the non-conference records from the last two years have anything to say about it, that could prove true.
  • Last season, the eight WIAC teams had a combined 52-36 non-conference record (not counting post season games). This year, the non-conference record is 68-19. Six of the eight schools have an improved record heading into the conference schedule.
  • Stevens Point is the only team to have fewer wins than last year, while Oshkosh has matched their record from a year ago at this point.
  • Here are the comparisons of each team, with the 2015-16 record listed first: UW-Eau Claire (7-4/10-1); UW-La Crosse (6-5/8-3); UW-Oshkosh (7-4/7-4); UW-Platteville (6-5/7-4); UW-River Falls (6-5/10-1); UW-Stevens Point (7-4/6-4); UW-Stout (4-7/9-2); UW-Whitewater (9-2/11-0).
  • In the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, Eau Claire is ranked seventh, followed by UW-Whitewater (11th), and UW-River Falls (17th). Heading into conference play last year, only Whitewater was ranked (15th).
  • In the WIAC preseason poll, Oshkosh was picked to finish first, followed by La Crosse, Whitewater, Eau Claire, River Falls, Stevens Point, Platteville and Stout.

SCOUTING SILVER LAKE COLLEGE
  • Silver Lake is located in Manitowoc, Wis. The Lakers play their home games at the UW-Manitowoc gym. The Lakers have played only four home games, plus a game against UW-Manitowoc, and have only six home games left on their schedule. They are on the road for 20 games.
  • Silver Lake College is in their first year of being affiliated with the NAIA.
  • Four active players are averaging more than 10 points per game - Jordan Portee (16.7); Jeremy Landers (13.7); Stevens Alexis (13.4) and Freddy Cook (10.6). Alexis is averaging a team-high 6.8 rebounds.
  • The Lakers' three wins have come against UW-Manitowoc (103-79), Emmaus Bible College (85-76), a team Stout defeated last year, and Maranatha Baptist (84-73).

LAKERS LAST TIME OUT
  • The Lakers have been idle since dropping an 89-58 decision at Lakeland College, Dec. 9.
  • Luka Jovicic led the Lakers with 15 points and 15 rebounds. The 6-8 Jovicic also had two blocked shots.
  • Corey Lloyd contributed 10 points and connected on a pair of 3-pointers. Freddy Cook hit two 3-pointers and finished with eight points.
  • The Lakers shot 39.3 percent from the floor (24-61), 25 percent (5-20) from 3-point range and 50 percent (5-10) from the line.
  • After the Lakers play in Menomonie, they head to Sioux City, Iowa, where they will meet Dordt College, Jan. 4.

LAST TIME STOUT AND SILVER LAKE MET
  • The teams have meet twice, with Stout winning both contests, a 72-60 win in Manitowoc during the 2008-09 season and a 102-72 win in Menomonie during the 2009-10 season, Feb. 17, 2010
  • In the Menomonie win, the winless Lakers (0-23) tied the game at 35 in the first half and trailed 39-37 at halftime
  • Stout scored 63 points in the second half to run away with the game. The Blue Devils shot 60.5 percent (23-38) from the floor in the second half, and knocked down 7-of-11 second half 3-pointers (63.6 percent) to finish with 11 total 3-pointers.
  • Eric Hostetter scored 21 of his game-high 27 points in the second half for the Blue Devils. Mahlon Thomas contributed 20 points.

SCOUTING UW-PLATTEVILLE
  • After starting the season at 5-1, the Pioneers have dropped three of their last five games.
  • Platteville opened the season wit an 86-58 exhibition loss at the University of Wisconsin. Platteville head coach Jeff Gard and Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard are brothers.
  • Robert Duax leads the team with 15.5 points per game and has led the team in scoring six times this season. Duax has scored more than 20 points in four games and had a season-high 29 points against Lake Forest. Duax is ranked eighth in the league in scoring, second in steals and fifth in assists.
  • Troy Sigl is averaging 12.2 points per contest and Matt Oestrich 10.8. 
  • Cory Vaassel leads the team off the glass with 5.5 rebounds.

PIONEERS LAST TIME OUT
  • St. Norbert College outscored the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team 45-31 in the second half to rally from a seven-point halftime deficit to win the championship game of the Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament 63-56 Friday night at UW-Green Bay's Kress Events Center..

LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND PLATTEVILLE MET
  • The Pioneers won both contests last year, winning 66-62 in overtime Menomonie in January and 87-80 in Platteville in February in the final game of the season.
  • In a low scoring, grind it out, defensive battle, Stout put up one of their best fights of the season. They started out slow as Platteville came out shooting, going on a 3-13 run to begin the first half. Stout's second unit came through, bringing the game to within one point on an Issac Elliot three pointer with 8:14 left in the half. They then charged ahead again to take a 24-22 lead on a three pointer from Brandyn Christman. They closed out the half on top 29-28.
  • Platteville's Robert Duax led the game with 16 points shooting 4-of-10 from the three point line. Stout's John Keefe scored 15 points and Brandyn Christman scored a then-career high 13.

  • The Pioneers held a 19 point, 83-64, lead with 3-minute, 47-seconds left in the contest. The Blue Devils closed out the game with a 17-4 run. Brett Ahsenmacher scored a pair of 3-pointers in the final run.
  • Stout had four players score in double digits, led by Jalen Patterson's 17 points. John Keefe and John Lahti each added 11 points and Ahsenmacher finished with 10 points.
  • Patteville's Robert Duax came off the bench to lead all scorers with 26 points and Boston Johnson added 21 points
  • Stout shot 29 of 62 (46.8 percent) from the floor, 8 of 23 (34.8 percent) from 3-point range and 14 of 21 (66.7 percent) from the line. The Pioneers shot 27 of 57 (47.4 percent) from the floor, 11 of 27 (40.7 percent) from beyond the arc and 22 of 28 (78.6 percent) from the line.

  • Platteville holds an 83-48 lead in the series and has a seven game winning streak over the Blue Devils, which includes a WIAC playoff game in Platteville in the 2013-14 season.

SCOUTING UW-OSHKOSH
  • The Titans had a five game winning streak snapped when they lost in overtime to Carthage College on New Year's Eve.
  • The Titans, the WIAC preseason favorite, opened league play with a 73-68 win over Stevens Point Wednesday in Stevens Point
  • The Titans have allowed the fewest points in the WIAC (63.9)
  • Ben Boots leads the team with 14.6 points per game, followed by Charlie Noone with 14.7 points and Brett Wittchow with 10.6. Boots opened the season by scoring 28 and 31 points in the first two games.  Noone is second in the WIAC in 3-point field goals made. Max Schebel leads the team off the glass with 5.6 rebounds per contest. 
  • The Titans lead the league in free throw percentage at .787.

TITANS LAST TIME OUT
  • Charlie Noone poured in 21 points and Ben Boots added 18 to lead the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team to a 73-68 win at UW-Stevens Point in the WIAC opener on Wednesday
  • Noone, Boots and Max Schebel, who finished the game with 12 points, combined to score 33 of UW-Oshkosh's 40 points during the second half. Boots converted a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to provide the final score.
  • UW-Oshkosh (8-4, 1-0 WIAC), predicted to win the WIAC title in a poll by the league's coaches and sports information directors, won its league opener for the first time in seven seasons.
  • Noone made 9 of 16 shots from the floor and collected six rebounds and two assists.
  • Boots shot 5-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-7 from 3-point range, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He added six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Schebel converted five of his six attempts from the floor, including 4-for-5 from the field and 2-for-3 from the foul line during the second half.Mike Stevenson made a 3-pointer with 6.2 seconds remaining in overtime to propel Carthage College to a 68-67 win over the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team on Saturday (Dec. 31) in Kolf Sports Center.

  • After UW-Oshkosh's Taylor Jansen converted a pair of free throws with 0.3 seconds left send the game into overtime tied at 59, the Titans scored the first seven points of overtime for a 66-59 advantage 2:06 left. However, Carthage College closed the contest with a 9-1 scoring run to secure its first victory in the series since 2013.

LAST YEAR WHEN STOUT AND OSHKOSH MET
  • The Titans won both contests last year, a 62-47 win in Oshkosh in January and a wild, come-from-behind 66-65 win in Menomonie in February.
  • Stout could not get their offensive in gear in the first half, and the hole the Blue Devils dug was too deep to get out as UW-Oshkosh defeated the Blue Devils, 67-42, at Kolf Sprts Center Jan. 23, 2016.
  • The Blue Devils (shot only 17.2 percent in the first half, while the Titans (11-6, 4-2 WIAC) hit on 50 percent of their first half shots to take a 37-12 halftime lead.
  • The Titans' Alex Olson had a monster game, dropping 27 points, 20 in the first half. Ben Boots contributed 11 for the Titans. Stout was led by John Keefe with 10 points.

  • The Blue Devils played perhaps their most inspired game of the season, jumping out to a 39-24 halftime lead as John Keefe scored 11 first half points and Jalen Patterson dropped in 10 points, Feb. 6, 2016.
  • Stout a 51-34 lead with 15:26 remaining in the game. The Titans went on a run, outscoring Stout 14-3 over the next seven minutes.
  • Ben Boots hit a 3-pointer with a minute left to pull the Titans to within one point, 65-64. Alex Olson hit a jumper with 21 seconds left to give the Titans the win. Stout's last field goal of the game came with just over two minutes left to play.

  • Stout holds a 65-61 lead in the series, but Oshkosh has a four game winning streak over the Blue Devils
  • The teams are scheduled to meet again to close out the regular season Feb. 18 in Menomonie.

BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.



UW-STOUT COACH EDDIE ANDRIST
  • Eddie Andrist (198-220 at Stout, 448-411 overall) is in his 16th year as the coach of the Blue Devils, and his 26th overall in the collegiate ranks.
  • Andrist led the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Division III appearance five seasons ago when Stout advanced to the second round.
  • Andrist coached at Mount Senario for 11 seasons and won three national championships.
  • Andrist spent two stints as a UW-Stout assistant, first as a student coach in the 1970s, then again during the 1980s.
  • Andrist spent two stints coaching international basketball, working with the country of Qatar.


SILVER LAKE COLLEGE COACH DEREK DOMINO
  • Derek Domino is in his second season as the head coach of the Lakers. Domino was the lead assistant for the Lakers during the 2014-15 season.
  • Domino was a point guard for Silver Lake and ranked second in the nation in assists per game (6.4) before injuring his hamstring, which caused him to miss eight of the team's last 11 games.
  • Domino holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management and a Master's Degree in Management & Organizational Development from Silver Lake College. He is an assistant athletic director at Silver Lake.

UW-PLATTEVILLE COACH JEFF GARD
  • Jeff Gard; 8th season at UWP; 107-78
  • .Jeff Gard enters his seventh year as the head men's basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He was named the 13th head coach in Pioneer history on June 9, 2009, after serving as an assistant with the Pioneers for the previous six seasons including his final two as the associate head coach.

UW-OSHKOSH COACH PAT JUCKEM
  • Pat Juckem; 12th season (5th at UWO); 166-137 (overall) / 61-58 (at UWO)
  • Pat Juckem (yuck-um) is entering his fifth season as head coach of the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball program.
  • Juckem owns a 61-58 record and one NCAA Division III Championship appearance during his four seasons at UW-Oshkosh. He has also helped two Titan players garner a total of three All-WIAC first team honors.
  • Last season, Juckem coached the Titans to their sixth NCAA postseason appearance and first during his tenure. UW-Oshkosh compiled an 18-10 record, including a second-place 9-5 mark in WIAC play. The Titans, who ranked 14th in the country by allowing 64 points per game, clinched WIAC's automatic berth into the Division III Championship by winning a pair of home games in the league tournament, including a 66-63 decision over UW-River Falls in the final. UW-Oshkosh, making its first NCAA postseason appearance since 2003, suffered a 73-63 setback to Elmhurst College (Ill.) during the opening round of the Division III Championship.



CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. Oshkosh was picked to win the league, followed by La Crosse, Whitewater, Eau Claire, River Falls, Stevens Point, Platteville and Stout.


DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.

UW-Stout 2016-17 Individual Season Highs (Updated January 5, 2017)
