MBB Preview: Blue Devils host Dubuque as floor dedicated to Mintz

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (5-2, 0-0 WIAC) close out the first semester of play when they play host to the Universtiy of Dubuque (2-3, 1-2 IIAC), Saturday, Dec. 10 at 4 p.m. The Blue Devils will dedicate the court to long-time coach Dwain "Dewey" Mintz at halftime of the Dubuque game.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS: The Blue Devils are off to a 5-2 start, already topping last year's wins total. And they are doing it in style, averaging 78.4 points per game, scoring under 80 points in only two of their seven games. John Keefe leads Stout again this year, tallying 17.1 points per game, third in the WIAC. Keefe is second in the WIAC in assists with 4.71 dishes per contest. Keegan Dickson is averaging 11.0 points and Cory Speer is right behind him, coming off the bench for 10.9 points. Speer two games back tallied 31 points. Sam Ortmann is averaging 9.3 points and is the team's leading rebounder with 5.6 points. Senior guard Brett Ahsenmacher is averaging 4.7 rebounds.  | Statistics

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT:  Coming off a high scoring loss at Bethany Lutheran College, the Blue Devils rebounded with a 66-64 win at the University of Northwestern, Wednesday. Eight points by Braden Walbeck and two 3-pointers by Sam Ortmann in the first five minutes of the second half turned a four point halftime UW-Stout deficit into a lead and the Blue Devils went on to the win. Walbeck led Stout with a career-best 16 points. Sam Ortmann pitched in 14 points and Jacob Nordstrom matched a career-best with 10 points. Brett Ahsenmacher led Stout off the boards with eight.  | Game Story and Statistics

CAREER BESTS: The Blue Devils have tallied a number of individual team best scoring this year. John Keefe went off for 32 points against Superior and Cory Speer lit up Buena Vista for 31. Sam Ortmann scored a best 14 points against Buena Vista, then topped that with a 16 points effort against Bethany Lutheran. Keegan Dickson scored 20 points and Jacob Nordstrom has matched a career high by scoring 10 three times this season. Isaac Elliot tallied 19 points against Robert Morris, 17 in the first half. John Lahti opened the season with a career-best 17 points against UM-Crookston. The 95 team points scored by Stout against Superior was the most by a Blue Devil team since downing Bethel University 95-60, to open the 2010-11 season. Stout is averaging 78.4 points per contest, almost five points higher than last year after seven games (73.6), and 13 points more than they finished last season averaging (65.5). Even with those numbers the Blue Devils are ranked fourth in the WIAC in scoring. The Blue Devils don't even crack the top 150 in the country in scoring, ranking 155th. And Grinnell doesn't even lead the country in scoring with a whopping 127.0 points, but Greenville College is tallying 131.6.

MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse will be named Dewey Mintz Court in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.

SCOUTING UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE: The Spartans have two wins and three losses to their names this season, playing three IIAC conference opponents already, taking one win. Dubuque is led junior guard T.J Lake. Lake averages 20.0 points per game, but he's not the only Spartan to average double digits. Jamaree Atwater averages exactly 17 points a contest, and Jake Weber 15 points while also being the team's leading rebounder with 12 per game. The Spartans came off a IIAC championship run last season, but this season looks a bit different, they will need to get a few good wins against a good IIAC conference to get back to championship form.  | Statistics

SPARTANS LAST TIME OUT: The Spartans took a loss to conference opponent Central College, in a close 73-64 game. Jake Weber sunk two free throws around the 3:30 mark to keep the game tied at 62, but the Central Dutch went on an 11-2 run to finish the game, sealing the victory. LAST TIME STOUT AND DUBUQUE MET: John Lahti was perfect from the floor and scored a career-high 16 points as UW-Stout, shooting 54 percent as a team, defeated the University of Dubuque, 82-74, Dec. 8, 2015 in Dubuque, Iowa. Lahti drained all six of his field goals and was 4-of-5 from the line to lead the Blue Devils to their third win of the season. Lahti also pulled down six rebounds. The Blue Devils  got a balanced scoring attack, with John Keefe scoring 14 points, Jalen Patterson 10 and Sam Ortmann and Brandyn Christman nine each. Stout needed all of their points to offset a 34-point effort by the Spartans' Andre Norris, who led all scorers with 34 points. AWARDS AND HONORS: John Keefe was selected WIAC Athlete of the Week, Nov. 29, after scoring 32 points against UW-Superior and 15 against Buena Vista University...John Keefe was selected as the UW-Stout/DigiCopy Athlete of the Week, Nov. 20,  after his performance over the first three games of the season..

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Eddie Andrist (194-220 at Stout, 444-411 overall) is in his 16th year as the coach of the Blue Devils, and his 26th overall in the collegiate ranks. Andrist led the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Division III appearance five seasons ago when Stout advanced to the second round. Andrist coached at Mount Senario for 11 seasons and won three national championships. Andrist spent two stints coaching international basketball, working with the country of Qatar.  Dubuque: Robbie Sieverding is in his 10th season as Dubuque head coach. Prior to becoming head coach in 2007,  he served as an assistant for the men's basketball program. During his time at The University of Dubuque the men's basketball program has made significant improvements in the highly competitive Iowa Conference with two IIAC Tournament titles and one IIAC regular season title.  Sieverding led the 2015-16 team to its first regular season Iowa Conference (IIAC) regular season championship with an 11-3 record.

CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. Dubuque is a member of the IIAC.
