MBB Preview: Blue Devils looking to make splash in the Dells

THIS WEEK'S GAMES:The Blue Devils (6-2, 0-0 WIAC) will close out the calendar year when they play at the Just A Game Classic in Wisconsin Dells, meeting Central College (7-2, 1-1 IIAC), Thursday, Dec. 29 and Lawrence University (2-4, 2-2 MWC), Friday, Dec. 30. Both games are scheduled for 5 p.m.

WMEQ 880 Radio, with Pete Knutson, Jay Fahl or Jake Bostrom, will broadcast and provide a live audio stream of away conference games and a select number of home games. A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
  • The Blue Devils are off to a 6-2 start, already topping last year's wins total. And they are doing it in style, averaging 76.1 points per game. Stout has scored 80 points or more in six games so far this year.
  • John Keefe appears in the top six of eight WIAC categories - 3rd, scoring 16.9; 6th rebounds, 6.1; 1st, assists, 5.13; 5th, free throw percentage, .906; 3rd, steals, 15; 3rd, 3-point FG made, 2.75; 1st, assist/turnover ratio, 3.42; 1st, minutes played, 33.6.
  • Cory Speer has been coming off the bench to average an even 10.0 points per game.
  • Keegan Dickson has started all eight games and is averaging 9.9 points. He had drained 17-of-41 3-pointers.
  • Sam Ortmann is having his best collegiate season, averaging 8.8 points and is the team's second leading rebounder with 5.4 caroms. Senior guard Brett Ahsenmacher is averaging 4.3 rebounds.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
  • The Blue Devils defeated the University of Dubuque 60-58, Dec. 10 at Dewey Mintz Court.
  • When John Keefe hit a bucket at the first half buzzer, it gave Stout a five point lead, which would prove to be the widest point spread of the evening.
  • Stout maintained a small lead throughout the second half, but the Spartans went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 50-50 with 4:36 remaining.
  • The teams traded 3-pointers. John Lahti put Stout up with a free throw and the Spartans' TJ Lake gave Dubuque their first lead, 55-54, at 3:04, since the opening minutes of the game.
  • Braden Walbeck and Sam Ortmann hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Stout a 60-55 with 36 seconds left. A 3-pointer by Deonte Newsome with 22 seconds pulled Dubuque to within 60-58 with 22 seconds left. Stout killed 17 seconds off the clock, but turned the ball over with five seconds left. The Blue Devils did not allow the Spartans a wide-open shot and the 3-point attempt by Marcus McDaniel hit the front of the rim and the rebound was pulled down by Ortmann who sealed the ball and the game.
  • Braden Walbeck led Stout for the second straight game, finishing with a career-best 17 points.
  • Keefe recorded Stout's first double-double of the season, rolling the net for 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Keefe finished with eight assists to tease with a triple-double.
  • Stout held a 43-26 advantage off the glass. Keegan Dickson finished with nine rebounds, matching a career-best.

CAREER BESTS
  • The Blue Devils have tallied a number of individual team best scoring this year.
  • John Keefe went off for 32 points against Superior

  • Sam Ortmann scored a best 14 points against Buena Vista, then topped that with a 16 points effort against Bethany Lutheran.
  • Keegan Dickson scored 20 points and Jacob Nordstrom has matched a career high by scoring 10 three times this season.
  • Isaac Elliot tallied 19 points against Robert Morris, 17 in the first half.
  • John Lahti opened the season with a career-best 17 points against UM-Crookston.
  • Sophomore transfer Braden Walbeck ran his career-best up the ladder throughout the season and scored 17 against Dubuque.
  • The 95 team points scored by Stout against UW-Superior was the most by a Blue Devil team since downing Bethel University 95-60, to open the 2010-11 season.
  • Stout is averaging 76.1 points per contest, almost four points higher than last year after eight games (72.2), and 10.6 points more than they finished last season averaging (65.5).
  • the Blue Devils are ranked fourth in the WIAC in scoring. Stout is third in assists (14.50) and fourth in steals (6.63). Stout has a turnover margin of plus-4.12, and leads the league in assists/turnover ration (1.45).

SCOUTING CENTRAL COLLEGE
  • After two NCAA Division III tournament berths, an Iowa Conference championship and two league tourney crowns in his four seasons, coach Craig Douma checked off another measure of his program's progress when his Central College men's basketball team was tabbed as this year's conference title favorite in a poll of league coaches.
  • Five starters return from last year's 19-10 club which, after placing fifth in the standings, made a stirring and unprecedented run through the league tournament, winning three straight road games to claim the tourney title and NCAA tourney berth.
  • The Dutch traveled to St. Thomas (Minn.) for the NCAA tournament's first round and threw a scare into the eventual national champs before dropping a 78-66 decision
  • Four Dutch are averaging more than 10 points this season. Colby Taylor (23.6) Pete Walker, (12.6) Kyle Smith (12.1) and Trashawn Boyd (11.5). Taylor leads the Dutch off the glass with 9.4 boards per contest. Taylor is ranked 18th nationally in scoring and 78th in rebounding. Taylor has recorded six double-doubles this season.
  • Central has outscored their opponents, 85.9--82.2.

DUTCH LAST TIME OUT
  • The Central men's basketball team fell to No. 24-ranked Augustana College (Ill.) 88-73 Dec. 16 in Rock Island, Ill.
  • Central (7-2) had built momentum heading into the matchup Friday after crucial victories over last season's Iowa Conference champion University of Dubuque last Wednesday and No. 13-ranked Washington-St. Louis University (Mo.) on Saturday. Friday night, the Dutch built an 11-point lead in first half and took a 35-34 lead into halftime but gave up a 53-point second half to the Vikings.
  • Junior guard Trashawn Boyd led the Dutch with 20 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, good for Boyd's first career statistical double-double.
  • The Dutch were without the team's top two scorers, forwards Colby Taylor and Kyle Smith in the first half.
  • After missing the first half, Taylor added 14 points and four rebounds and senior forward Austin Glawe had 12 points and three rebounds. Senior guard Pete Walker scored five points and added four rebounds before exiting the game late in the first half.

  • The teams have only met once, that coming midway through the 1981-82 season, with Stout putting up an 80-57 win.

SCOUTING LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY
  • The Vikings enter the 2016-17 picked to finish eighth in the 10-team Midwest Conference. The Vikings finished seventh last year with an overall record of 10-13 and a 7-11 conference finish.
  • Ben Peterson is ranked 12th nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (.536 / 15-28) and Mitch Willer is 11th nationally in field goal percentage (.677 / 44-65). Willer is averaging 15.8 points per contest and Peterson is averaging 11.8. Jeremy Stephani is averaging 13.2 points. Willer leads the team in rebounds at 8.2.
  • The Vikings are being outscored 81.5-76.
  • The past decade has been good for the Vikings. Lawrence won five of six Midwest Conference championships and MWC Tournament titles from 2004-09 (2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009). Lawrence also earned a No. 1 national ranking in 2005-06 and had the nation's best record that season.
  • Lawrence University is a member of the Midwest Conference and was picked to finish eighth.

VIKINGS LAST TIME OUT
  • Lawrence lost to Grinnell College, 133-125, Dec. 9, as Grinnell hit four consecutive shots in overtime Saturday to take control and held on for a 133-125 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at Alexander Gymnasium.
  • Mitch Willer went 15-for-17 from the floor on his way to 30 points for the Vikings (2-4, 2-2). Willer picked up a double-double as he grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and added four blocks.
  • Pete Winslow was 9-for-9 from the floor as he compiled a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds for the Vikings. Jeremy Stephani added 19 points, six assists and five rebounds, and freshman guard Abhishek Venkatesh picked up 16 points, six assists and three steals.
  • Lawrence's other rookie guard, Quinn Fisher, had a game-high 10 assists to go with six points.
  • Lawrence shot 69.9 percent (51-73) from the floor but poor foul shooting and too many turnovers against Grinnell's pressure defense was the difference. The Vikings went 19-for-38 from the stripe and committed 33 turnovers.
  • Six Grinnell players scored in double figures.
  • The Vikings were scheduled to meet MSOE Dec. 17, but that game was postponed due to weather. No make-up date has been announced.

LAST TIME STOUT AND LAWRENCE MET
  • The teams have met only once and that came during the 1937-38 season with Lawrence capturing a 42-39 decision.

SCOUTING SILVER LAKE COLLEGE
  • Silver Lake is located in Manitowoc, Wis. The Lakers play their home games at the UW-Manitowoc gym. The Lakers have played only four home games, plus a game against UW-Manitowoc, and have only six home games left on their schedule. They are on the road for 20 games.
  • Silver Lake College is in their first year of being affiliated with the NAIA.
  • Four active players are averaging more than 10 points per game - Jordan Portee (16.7); Jeremy Landers (13.7); Stevens Alexis (13.4) and Freddy Cook (10.6). Alexis is averaging a team-high 6.8 rebounds.
  • The Lakers' three wins have come against UW-Manitowoc (103-79), Emmaus Bible College (85-76), a team Stout defeated last year, and Maranatha Baptist (84-73).
  • Statistics

LAKERS LAST TIME OUT
  • The Lakers have been idle since dropping an 89-58 decision at Lakeland College, Dec. 9.
  • Luka Jovicic led the Lakers with 15 points and 15 rebounds. The 6-8 Jovicic also had two blocked shots.
  • Corey Lloyd contributed 10 points and connected on a pair of 3-pointers. Freddy Cook hit two 3-pointers and finished with eight points.
  • The Lakers shot 39.3 percent from the floor (24-61), 25 percent (5-20) from 3-point range and 50 percent (5-10) from the line.
  • After the Lakers play in Menomonie, they head to Sioux City, Iowa, where they will meet Dordt College, Jan. 4.

LAST TIME STOUT AND SILVER LAKE MET
  • The teams have meet twice, with Stout winning both contests, a 72-60 win in Manitowoc during the 2008-09 season and a 102-72 win in Menomonie during the 2009-10 season, Feb. 17, 2010
  • In the Menomonie win, the winless Lakers (0-23) tied the game at 35 in the first half and trailed 39-37 at halftime
  • Stout scored 63 points in the second half to run away with the game. The Blue Devils shot 60.5 percent (23-38) from the floor in the second half, and knocked down 7-of-11 second half 3-pointers (63.6 percent) to finish with 11 total 3-pointers.
  • Eric Hostetter scored 21 of his game-high 27 points in the second half for the Blue Devils. Mahlon Thomas contributed 20 points.
  • Dwight Weathers led Silver Lake with 20 points, 14 in the first half.

AWARDS AND HONORS: John Keefe was selected WIAC Athlete of the Week, Nov. 29, after scoring 32 points against UW-Superior and 15 against Buena Vista University...John Keefe was selected as the UW-Stout/DigiCopy Athlete of the Week, Nov. 20, after his performance over the first three games of the season.


UW-STOUT COACH EDDIE ANDRIST
  • Eddie Andrist (194-220 at Stout, 444-411 overall) is in his 16th year as the coach of the Blue Devils, and his 26th overall in the collegiate ranks.
  • Andrist led the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Division III appearance five seasons ago when Stout advanced to the second round.
  • Andrist coached at Mount Senario for 11 seasons and won three national championships.
  • Andrist spent two stints as a UW-Stout assistant, first as a student coach in the 1970s, then againduring the 1980s.
  • Andrist spent two stints coaching international basketball, working with the country of Qatar.

CENTRAL COLLEGE COACH CRAIG DOUMA
  • Craig Douma was named the Central head men's basketball coach in 2012.
  • He's already piloted the Dutch to two NCAA Division III tournament appearances. His 2015-16 squad became the first in Iowa Conference history to win three straight road games in taking the league tournament championship with a No. 5 seed. It's a conference record 11th NCAA tourney appearance overall.
  • Douma's Dutch were picked for last place in the league for the 2013-14 campaign, but he piloted the squad to a surprising championship, the program's 17th. Central also captured the league tournament title. Douma was tabbed as the league's coach of the year.
  • After inheriting a team that posted a 10-14 mark in his first season, Douma led Central to a 21-8 mark in 2013-14 and followed it up with another winning season (15-11) in 2014-15, giving him a 46-33 career collegiate mark.

LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY COACH JOEL DEPAGTER
  • Joel DePagter is the first man in Midwest Conference history to be named the Coach of the Year (2009) and the Player of the Year (1997). Also, he is the first coach to win conference championships in his first two seasons as head coach.
  • DePagter became head coach in April 2007 after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant, DePagter's Vikings won the Midwest Conference championship and Midwest Conference Tournament titles in 2008 and 2009 and played in the NCAA Division III Tournament in both seasons.
  • DePagter, a native of Sheboygan, Wis., won 2009 Coach of the Year honors after leading his team to its second consecutive conference title and MWC Tournament title.
  • DePagter played three seasons at Lawrence and is regarded as one of the greatest players in school history. He was named first-team All-Midwest Conference all three years (1996, 1997 and 1998), and was chosen as the conference Player of the Year in 1997. DePagter was inducted into the Lawrence University Intercollegiate Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.

SILVER LAKE COLLEGE COACH DEREK DOMINO
  • Derek Domino is in his second season as the head coach of the Lakers. Domino was the lead assistant for the Lakers during the 2014-15 season.
  • Domino was a point guard for Silver Lake and ranked second in the nation in assists per game (6.4) before injuring his hamstring, which caused him to miss eight of the team's last 11 games.
  • Domino holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management and a Master's Degree in Management & Organizational Development from Silver Lake College. He is an assistant athletic director at Silver Lake.


CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. Central is a member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) and Lawrence is a member of the Midwest Conference (MWC).

DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.

UP NEXT: The Blue Devils return home Tuesday, Jan. 3, when they host Silver Lake College, at 6:30 p.m., then open WIAC play the following night when they host UW-Platteville, Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. Stout will be at conference favorite UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Jan. 7 for a 7 p.m. meeting.
