Archived VideoMENOMONIE (January 8, 2016) - UW-Stout posted their highest season-opening score when they dropped a close 186.975-183.400 to defending national champion UW-La Crosse Friday at Johnson Fieldhouse. The score exceeded their previous high by more than three points. Although the team fell to UW-La Crosse,
Kenzie Hyde (So, Sunderland, Ont.) stole the show with a superb all-around performance. Hyde posted an overall score of 37.675 which earned her the top spot in the competition. She also took the gold on the bars with a score of 9.375.Â
The Blue Devils broke out of the gate strong on vault with an event score of 47.475.
Kaylee Jondahl (Jr, Anoka, Minn.) served at the anchor of this event and achieved a second place finish with a score of 9.65. Other noteworthy performances on the vault were
Kelly Huseman (So, Tampa, Fla.) with a career high of 9.575,
Randi Schorzman (Sr, Buckley, Wash.) with a 9.5, and Hyde with a 9.4. Stout went six for six on vault, making them the leader after the first rotation.
After a shaky second rotation on bars, Stout made a comeback with one of the teams best balance beam performances in history. Despite counting one fall, Stout was just shy of breaking the school record with a 46.925. Senor captain
Callie Counts lead the team on beam with a career high of 9.6. Hyde also had a rock solid routine which posted a 9.5. Freshman
Chelsea Gray (Fr, Fitchberg) made a name for herself after her performance which included the same difficult triple tumbling series as Counts. She earned the third highest score from the Blue Devil beam lineup after posting a 9.425.
Hyde once again earned the top spot for Stout, and the silver in the overall competition with a score of 9.40 on the floor. Defending national floor champion Jondahl returned with an uncharacteristically fall on her last pass, yet still managed to post a 9.125. Going into the last rotation, Stout was barely trailing La Crosse. Unfortunately, the Blue Devils had some major mistakes at the end of the meet, which ultimately caused them fall behind the eagles in the end.
Stout will be competing at Winona State, Friday, Jan. 15. They will face off against the Warriors at 6:30 pm.
