Gymnastics Preview: Blue Devils return to WIAC, at Gustavus Friday

THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION:  After a trip to the desert to take on three Division I programs at the University of Arizona, the Blue Devils return to their own climate and will be at Gustavus Adolphus College, Friday, Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS: The 2015 UW-Stout Blue Devils are made up of one senior, four juniors, three sophomores and five freshmen. The Blue Devils return three players who have national experience. Sophomore Kaylee Jondahl and junior Randi Schorzman last season competed at the national meet Schorzman on the balance beam and Jondahl on the floor exercise. Jondahl narrowly missed advancing on the vault. Schorzman earned All-America honors as a freshman. Junior Sara Perez competed on the uneven bars as a freshman and will be looking for a return trip this year. The Blue Devils will be working their way through injuries the first part of the season. The Blue Devils graduated seven seniors from last year's team.

Jondahl and freshman Kenzie Hyde are both posting the top scores in the WIAC on the vault (9.650). Schorzman's 9.575 on the balance beam is tied for second best in the league. Jondahl and two other gymnasts have put up the top score on the floor exercise (9.750), and Jondahl is currently fifth in the league in the all-around (37.575). 

LAST TIME OUT:   Kaylee Jondahl set or matched three event career-bests as the UW-Stout gymnastics team competed in a quadrangular with three NCAA Division I teams at the University of Arizona. Jondahl finished third in the all-around with a career-best score of 37.575. Jondahl matched a career-best on the floor exercise (9.750) in finishing eighth. She matched a career-best on the balance beam with with a score of 9.000, finishing 15th. Randi Schorzman matched a career-best on the balance beam, finishing ninth with a 9.575. Freshman Kenzie Hyde was ninth on the vault, (9.650) and fifth in the all-around (36.075).  As a team, the Blue Devils finished fourth with a score of 181.175, a score the team did not exceed last year until the fifth match of the season. 

A LOOK AT GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS: The Gusties improved a couple of points from their first meet to their second meet. jumping from a 172.650 at a three-team meet at UW-Eau Claire to open the season to a 174.550 in a narrow loss to Hamline University last weekend. Alexandra Kopp won the vault with a score of 9.275, while Lauren Kershner won the floor with a 9.325. Kopp and Kershner are both all-arounders and both posted a career-bests at the UW-Eau Claire meet, Kopp a 36.275 and Kershner a 34.925.

LAST TIME OUT: The Gustavus Adolphus gymnastics team suffered a narrow loss to Hamline University in its home-opener on Jan. 16 at the Sponberg Gymnastics Studio. The Gusties improved nearly two full points from their season-opening performance at the UW-Claire Invitational, recording a 174.550 this evening in their home gym.

THE LAST TIME THE TEAMS MET: UW-Stout, led by Kaylee Jondahl  swept all four events on their way to defeating Gustavus Adolphus 181.375-170.500 on senior night, Feb. 14, 2014, at Johnson Fieldhouse. Jondahl took first place in three events helping lead the Blue Devils to victory.  Her scores of 9.450 on the vault, 9.200 on the bars and 9.625 on the floor were all good for first place.  Jondahl's scores on the bars and floor were both personal best. |

LAST YEAR'S BLUE DEVILS:  UW-Stout set school a new school team record (188.650) and event records on the vault (47.575), uneven bars (47.400), and the balance beam (46.875). Kasondra Tulloch set a school record on the uneven bars (9.750). Three gymnasts - Katherine Prouty, Kaylee Jondahl, Randi Schorzman - advanced to the NCGA Championship. Schorzman and Jondahl return. Prouty earned four All-America honors in her final collegiate meet, setting a new school record in the all-around (38.550). For Schorzman, it was her second trip to the national championship.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Kaylee Jondahl was the WIAC gymnastics specialist of the week two consecutive weeks, following meets at the University of Nebraska and after the Gustavus Adolphus Dual. Jondahl was also named the UW-Stout/Northwestern Mutual Athlete of the Week...Katherine Prouty was the WIAC gymnastics all-arounder of the week after Stout competed at the University of Nebraska.

2015 TEAM CAPTAINS: Captains for the 2015 season are Callie Counts and Mesha Peterson.

THE BLUE DEVIL COACH: UW-Stout: Becky Beaulieu is in her 10th season as the Blue Devil coach. Under Beaulieu's direction, UW-Stout gymnasts have earned 32 All-American awards and Beaulieu has coached national champions on the balance beam in 2008, the floor exercise in 2009, the uneven bars in 2010 and the vault and floor exercise in 2011. A UW-Stout gymnast has qualified and competed at the NCAA Division I regionals in 2009 at the University of Iowa and in 2010 at the University of Utah. Beaulieu, competing as Becky McDonnell at UW-La Crosse from 1997-2001, captured back-to-back NCGA floor exercise titles in 1998 and 1999. She established a since-eclipsed school floor exercise record score of 9.8. A seven-time NCGA All-American, she also garnered all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors nine times. The Eagles, for which she was a two-year captain, won two NCGA titles during her competing days. In 2012, Beaulieau was selected to the WIAC All-Time Gymnastics Team as the conference celebrated their 100th anniversary.

WIAC AND NCGA: The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) is made up of eight schools - UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stout, UW-Whitewater, Hamline University, Gustavus Adolphus College and Winona State University. These eight schools make up the NCGA West Region and are also members of the 15-school National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA). The other seven schools are: SUNY-Brockport, SUNY-Cortland, Ithaca (NY) College, Springfield (Mass) College, Rhode Island College, Ursinus (Pa) College and Wilson (Pa) College.
