THE BLUE DEVILS (12-11, 7-7 WIAC): Jimmy Whitehead and
Alex Oman lead the Blue Devils in scoring, Whitehead with 15.5 points per contest, Oman with 13.7 points. Oman passed the 1000th point mark several weeks ago and currently is ranked 16th on the Stout scoring list with 1090 points, ahead of Zak Alwin's (1991-95) 1078 points. Oman left Wednesday's game with an injury, did not play on Saturday and is not guaranteed to play on Wednesday. Whitehead is seventh in the WIAC in scoring, while Oman is 10th. The versatile
Aaron Jenny, who returned Wednesday after missing Saturday's game, leads the team in rebounds (5.5 rpg) and assists (2.2) and is averaging 10.9 points per contest. Whitehead is pulling down 5.1 rebounds, Oman 4.3 and
Josh Kosloske 4.3. Kosloske missed both of last week's games due to injury. Stout is outscoring their opponents, 63.7-62.3. Stout is third in the league in scoring defense.
Coming into the latter portion of the season, Stout is currently fifth in the WIAC after falling to Platteville on Saturday. With two games remaining -- against the first and third place teams in the conference in La Crosse (9-6 WIAC), and Stevens Point (13-1 WIAC) -- the Blue Devils hope to finish the regular season strong going into the conference tournament. The Blue Devils will take to the road for both games, jockeying for position in the WIAC Championship tournament, which gets underway, Wednesday, Feb. 26, with the sixth seeded team at the third seeded team. The fifth seeded team will be at the fourth seeded team. Top seeds one and two get the first round bye, then will host semi-final games, Friday, Feb. 28. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday, March 2. The Blue Devils have already clinched a spot in the tournament, but their seeding is still up for grabs. Depending on how games go this week, Stout has the potential to be seeded as high asÂ
Aaron Jenny is coming off an 18 point outing against Platteville, the fifth game this year he has led the Blue Devils in scoring. Coming into the season Jenny's career best for points in a game was 15; he has topped that number on five occasions so far this season. Averaging 10.7 points per game, good for third on the team, Jenny is tops on the team and tenth in the WIAC in rebounds per game, with 5.5. He also leads the team in assists, with 46 and is tied for second with 20 steals... SeniorsÂ
Alex Oman and
Jimmy Whitehead have been Stout's leading scorers this year, as Oman averages 13.7 ppg, second on the team to Whitehead's 15.5 per game average. After suffering an injury last week against UW-Superior on Wednesday, Oman was listed as questionable and did not play in a 48-55 loss to UW-Platteville. Oman is also tied for second on the team with 20 and fourth in assists with 34. He also pulls down 4.3 rpg, tied for third best on the Blue Devils... Whitehead, who was the team's leading scorer in six of the first nine games this year, has been dealing with nagging injuries since late December. Still, he leads the team with 15.5 ppg while shooting 53.5 percent from the field. His 5.1 rpg and 42 total assists are second on the the team... Senior forward
Jay Higgins has been one of the Blue Devils most consistent players over the last nine games. After coming off the bench for the first 14 games this year, Higgins has started nine straight. Over that stretch, he is averaging 7.9 points and 5 rebounds per game, raising his season averages to 4.1 ppg and 3.1 rpg. His 59.1 percent shooting on the year is also tops on the team. He recorded a career-high 15 points against UW-River Falls on Jan. 29... Sharp shooter Â
Adam Wadzinski has been one of the Blue Devil's most versatile weapons this year, starting 10 games while averaging 23.4 minutes per game, fourth on the team behind Whitehead (31 mpg), Jenny (28.6), and Oman (27.1). He is second on the team in three-point percentage, hitting 21-58 (36.2 percent) of his treys. Against La Crosse, his three pointer as time expired gave the Blue Devils a thrilling 59-57 victory. Â Wadzinski was the teams leading scorer against Oshkosh with a career-best 11, one of only two times this season a Blue Devil other than Whitehead, Oman, or Jenny led the team in scoring. He is currently first on the team with 23 steals and third in assists with 39... Freshman
Brett Ahsenmacher leads the Blue Devils in three-point attempts and makes, hitting 25-62 (40.3 percent) from downtown this year.  He has hit multiple three-pointers in eight games... Â
Debonair Townsend leads the team with 23 blocks (1.00 per game), good for fourth in the conference...Â
Tim Butina pulls in in 2.5 rpg and averages 2.9 ppg, but has been limited due to injury over the past few weeks... GuardÂ
Hank Kujak leads the team in assist-to-turnover ratio, with 26 assists compared to 17 turnovers...
The Blue Devils have 10 players who have started at least four games this season, but have not had any players who have started every game. Only Brent Ahsenmacher,
Adam Wadzinski and
Debonair Townsend have played in all games.. As a team, Stout is outscoring their opponents 64.5-62.7. The 62.7 points per game allowed by Stout is good for third best in the WIAC, behind Whitewater (60.6) and Stevens Point (60.7). The Blue Devils also hold their opponents to a WIAC low 41.6 percent shooting. Stout is second in the conference in rebounds per game with 36.0 while allowing opponents to grab only 27.3 rpg, fewest in the conference. Despite their high rebounding totals, the Blue Devils have had only three player grab double digit rebounds in a game this year. Jenny had 10 and 12 in the first two games of the season against Mount Mercy and Crown College, then grabbed 10 against UW-Superior, Feb. 12, while Kosloske grabbed 11 against Crown. Higgins snagged 10 boards against Ashford. Stout also is third in the conference in blocked shots (2.96 per game) and tops in offensive rebounding (12.0 per game). |Â
2013-14 Statistics
SENIOR CLASS: This big senior class (eight members) has been a key part to the 2013-14 Blue Devils. The senior class has scored 1174 of the team's 1418 points, or 82.8 percent of the points. They are averaging a combined 53.4 of the team's 64.5Â points per game. Off the glass, the seniors are pulling down 76.9 percent of the rebounds - 617 of 802 boards. This is one of the biggest senior classes in coach
Eddie Andrist's career. Two years ago, the Blue Devil had no seniors.
STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT:Â UW-Stout almost recovered from a nearly eight minute dry spell in the second half, but couldn't quite bounce back in a 55-48 loss at UW-Platteville last Saturday. The Blue Devils did not hit a field goal after a
Jimmy Whitehead jumper at 16:59 in the second unitl
Aaron Jenny's layup at the 8:45 mark. The Pioneers went on an 8-2 run during that stretch to take a 40-32 lead. Jenny pulled Stout to within three, 42-39, on a 3-pointer with 5:53 left and the Blue Devils would draw even closer after a pair of Whitehead free throws at 3:07 made it a 45-43 game. Stout was unable to tie the game up though, and the Pioneers made five free throws down the stretch to hold off the Blue Devils. Defensively, Stout held the Pioneers to their lowest point total of the season, well under their average of 72.8 points per contest. Stout's Jenny and the Pioneers' Jake Manning shared scoring honors with 18 points each. Whitehead added 13 for Stout. |
Platteville Story and Statistics
1000 and Counting: Blue Devil forward
Alex Oman came into the season with 816 career points, 42nd on Stout's all-time scoring list. Going into the Jan. 18 contest against Oshkosh, Oman's career total sat at 994. With 2:47 remaining and Stout trailing by two, Oman came up with a lay up to tie the game and push him over the 1000 point mark, giving him 1001 for his career. Oman currenlty has 1090 points, sitting 16th head of Zak Alwin (1991-95, 1078). Oman scored 169 points as a freshman, 258 as a sophomore and 389 as a junior.
SCOUTING UW-LA CROSSE (15-9, 9-6 WIAC): Calahan Skogman leads the Eagles with 14.9 ppg, good for ninth in the WIAC. This season, he has led or tied for the team's lead in scoring 12 times. Skogman is also La Crosse's leading rebounder, with 6.0 rpg, and leads the team with 51 assists (2.2 per game).
Lucas Collom and
Luke Tweed are the Eagle's other main scoring threats, as Collom averages 11.2 ppg and Tweed averages 11.0. Collom is second on the team with 4.4 rpg. Tweed and
Braden Tice currently have 23 steals apiece, tops on the team. Tice is the Eagle's best shooter from downtown, hitting 52.4 percent (54-103) of his threes this year. Skogman (44-124 3P, 35.5 percent) and Tweed (40-86 3P, 46.5 percent) have also made a living beyond the arc this season. As a team, La Crosse is outscoring their opponents 71.5-64.9. They are averaging the fourth most points per game in the WIAC while giving up the fifth most. Opponents hold a 32-7-30.8 edge in the rebounding department over the Eagles.  |
2013-14 Statistics
WHEN THEY MET LAST:Â Stout won a back and forth contest 59-57 over La Crosse on a game winning three point field goal fromÂ
Adam Wadzinski. Stout pulled out to an early lead in the first half whenÂ
Brett Ahsenmacher opened the scoring with a three pointer. The lead would last about five minutes before La Crosse would take control and lead for pretty much the rest of the half.  The Eagles lead 34-30 after one period. The second half was a different story due to the Blue Devils turning up the defensive intensity. La Crosse led for a majority of the period beforeÂ
Alex Oman's layup tied the game at 51 with 2:35 left. The Eagles took the lead back just 30 seconds later on a three pointer by Braden Tice to set up Wadzinski's dramatic game winning shot. With 19 seconds to play the Eagles missed a free throw giving the Blue Devils one last opportunity to win the game. Three different Blue Devils touched the ball before Oman found Wadzinski open in the corner for the game winning shot. La Crosse set up a final play but to no avail, as Ahsenmacher knocked it away and Stout left with a victory. Stout forced La Crosse into shooting only 28 percent in the second half, while the Blue Devils shot 50 percent.
Alex Oman was the high scorer and rebounder for Stout with 17 points and 7 rebounds.
Jay Higgins joined him in double figures, scoring 11 points. Lucas Collom was the high scorer and rebounder for La Crosse with 17 points and seven rebounds of his own.  |
Story and Statistics

Superior would cut the lead to 62-59 with 2:55 to go on a Jarrod Peterson layup. However, the Eagles would outscore Superior 10-4 the rest of the way to preserve the victory. Luke Tweed led the Eagles with 15 points, Calahan Skogman added 14 and Lucas Collom finished with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Peterson had 22 for the Yellowjackets while Bronson Byrne added 14.Â

SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT (22-1, 13-1 WIAC):Â Leading the way for the high-scoring Pointers offense are seniors
Tyler Tillema and

Tillema, who is scoring 20.5 ppg, is also tops on the team with 4.9 rpg while averaging 3.82 assists per contest, third in the WIAC. Hass averages 18.0 ppg for the Pointers while also grabbing a respectable 4.7 rpg. He is first on the team with 39 steals, an average of 1.70, second in the league behind only Whitewater's Quadrell Young, who averages 1.96. The Pointers have shot lights out all year, making 43.4 percent (160-269) of their three-pointers and 52.6 percent (634-1205) of their shots overall. Both numbers are the best in the conference. On the rebounding front, Stevens Point grabs 31.9 per game compared to 28.3 for their opponents.Â

2013-14 Statistics
WHEN THEY MET LAST:Â In a hard fought match from start to finish, the Blue Devils were unable to overcome top-ranked Stevens Point, falling 61-60 at Johnson Fieldhouse on Jan. 8. Stout overcame an early deficit, held the lead or kept the game tied for all but three minutes of the final 33 minutes of the contest, and held the Pointers to their lowest point total of the season to that point: 19 points under their season average. The game was tied seven times in the second half of play and Stevens Point had leads only at 17:39, 13:07, and 10:40 before taking it for good with 16 second remaining.
Alex Oman made one of two throws at 1:04 to give Stout a 60-59 lead, their final lead of the night. The Pointers' Tyler Tillema connected on the only field goal, a turnaround jumper, down the final stretch, connecting with 16.2 seconds remaining. Oman came up short on a 3-pointer and Stevens Point got the rebound when the ball went out of bounds. Trevor Hass was fouled with seconds left, but missed both throws. Oman pulled down the rebound with less than two seconds remaining, but his Hail Mary fell far short. Oman led all scorers with 20 points.
Brett Ahsenmacher finished with 12 points. Stout shot 52.6 percent (20-38) from the floor, 50 percent (9-18) from 3-point range and 68.8 percent (11-16) from the line. Hass led the Pointers with 19 points, followed by Tillema with 17. Joe Ritchay finished with 12 points. |
Story and Statistics
LAST TIME OUT:Â Stevens Point scored only 54 points, their lowest total of the season, but it was enough as the Pointers came away with a 54-50 victory over UW-River Falls last Saturday. The Pointers held River Falls scoreless over the last 4:15, turning a 50-48 deficit into a four point win. Stevens Point shot just 38 percent in the contest. Clayton Heuer lead all scorers with 15 points and had 11 rebounds for the Pointers while Tyler Tillema had 13 points and Trevor Hass added 12 points, including four three pointers, to go with eight rebounds. The Pointers will play at Oshkosh on Wednesday before facing off against Stout on Saturday in the season finale. Â |
