Weekly InterviewsLAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout: It was Senior Day and the seniors, along with a strong supporting cast, made the best of their last game at Williams Stadium, coming from behind to down UW-River Falls, 34-23, Nov. 8. Trailing 23-7 just before halftime, quarterback
Garrett Peterson completed a 38-yard TD pass to
Aaron Jenny as time ran out in the first half to shift the momentum to the Blue Devils' side. Starting with that pass, Stout would score 27 unanswered points for the win. Peterson finished the day completing 26-of-39 passes for 324 yards, the most passing yards by a Stout quarterback since 2004. Peterson tossed four TD passes, three to Jenny.
Cody Rosemeyer pulled in 13 passes for 73 yards and
Tanner Kuehn rushed 27 times for a career-best 114 yards.
Luke Bakkum had a monster day on defense, tallying 18 tackles, seven solo, two sacks, four tackles for loss and his first interception of the season. |Â
Complete Story and Box ScoreLAST TIME OUT: UW-Stevens Point: Matt Sosinsky pulled in 12 passes for 170 yards and one TD, but it wouldn't be nearly enough as the Pointers fell, 49-17, at top-ranked UW-Whitewater, Nov. 8. | Â Complete Story and Box Score
WHEN STOUT AND STEVENS POINT LAST MET: On a day where both teams had trouble holding onto the football in a 19-14 Stevens Point win, Stout's Adolfo Pacheco rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. His touchdown came late in the fourth quarter and pulled Stout within five points, as he faked out several defenders before carrying multiple Pointers across the goal line for his 9th score of the year. Pacheco ends the year just shy of 1,000 rushing yards, as he totaled 965 yards for the season. Over the last four games, he has averaged 150 rushing yards per game. Turnovers were the real story of the game though, especially early on. In a wacky first quarter, each team lost a fumble, the Pointers intercepted Hank Kujak twice and Luke Bakkum had an interception for Stout, for a total of five turnovers before the game was even 15 minutes old. For the game, both teams combined to turn the ball over nine times - six (4 interceptions, 2 fumbles) for Stout, three (2,1) for the Pointers - as the constant rain made playing conditions less than ideal. | Complete Story and Box Score
THE SERIES:Â Stevens Point leads the series, 49-18-2, in a series that began in 1913 with a 24-6 Stout win. The Pointers won last year's meeting, but the Blue Devils had won the two previous games.
WHO'S WHO: UW-Stout: Â Â
Since quarterback Hank Kujak (Sr, Blair) was lost to injury in the first game of the season, sophomores Aaron Koerner (Colby) and Garrett Peterson (Menasha) have taken over at the spot. Peterson made his season debut against UW-Oshkosh when he came on in relief of Koerner and went 7-16 for 104 yards and a touchdown. This past weekend, Peterson led the Blue Devils to a thrilling come-from-behind 34-23 win over River Falls, as he became the first Stout quarterback in over 10 years to throw for 300+ yards and the first Stout quarterback in nine years to throw four touchdowns in a game. Peterson finished the game 26-of-39 for 324 yards and four TDs as the Blue Devils were able to win their first conference game of the year. For his efforts, he was named the offensive athlete of the week by the WIAC. Peterson made his first career start against Whitewater on Homecoming and completed 10 of 19 passes for 156 yards. Against La Crosse, Peterson completed 70 percent of his passes, going 26 of 37 for 155 yards. He also carried the ball 10 times for 25 yards. In the loss to Platteville, Peterson set a then career-high, throwing for 205 yards. He also was the Blue Devil's second leading rusher, picking up 28 yards on 10 carries. On the season, Peterson has thrown for 1113 yards while completing 58.4 percent of his throws. He has thrown for five touchdowns on the year... Koerner has started three games for the Blue Devils and has completed 28 of 76 passes for 265 and four touchdowns. In his first collegiate start at quarterback, Koerner led Stout to a 21-17 victory over Loras College, throwing for 173 yards and three touchdowns....
Aaron Jenny (Sr, Spicer, Minn.), a former All-WIAC selection in basketball for the Blue Devils, has emerged as the top pass catcher for the Blue Devils this season. He currently leads the team in receptions (35), touchdowns (8) and receiving yards (395). His eight touchdown catches is second in the WIAC and he ranks tenth in receiving yards per game with 43.9 yards per game. Jenny has had two games this season where he has caught three touchdown passes, both of which the Blue Devils ended up victorious. In Stout' s victory over Loras College, Jenny caught touchdowns of 30, six, and three yards, with his third coming on an acrobatic, one-handed catch in the back corner of the endzone. Jenny repeated the hat-trick last week against River Falls, catching scores of 16, 38, and 39 yards. His 38-yarder came as time expired in the first half and gave Stout a big boost going into the break. Before Jenny accomplished it twice, the last time a Stout player caught  three touchdowns in a game was when tight end Patrick Mengellkoch accomplished the feat against UW-Oshkosh on Nov. 4, 2009. The last time a Stout wide receiver caught three TDs in a game was on Sept. 3, 2005, when Jessie Wendt caught a trio of scores against Upper Iowa. Over the last four years, three players have scored three TDs in a single game: RB Adolfo Pacheco on Oct. 26, 2013 vs. Plattevile, QB Michael Blizel vs. Stevens Point on Oct. 6, 2012, and RB Craig Warminski on Oct. 30, 2010 against La Crosse. Earlier this season, Jenny ran off three straight games in which he caught at least one touchdown pass. After his three TD performance, Jenny caught a touchdown in each of Stout's next two games. Jenny has caught at least one pass in every game so far this season and has caught at least five passes on three seperate occasions...
Also featured in Stout's passing game are seniors Cody Rosemeyer (Gilman), Matt Small (Atwater, Calif.) and Zak Snell (Castaic, Calif.). Small put together a nice midseason streak against Whitewater, La Crosse and Platteville, catching a total of 13 passes for 158 yards over those three contests, highlighted by his three catches for 73 yards against Whitewater. In the season opener, Small caught four balls for 72 yards and a TD. Last week, Small had three grabs for 65 yards and a touchdown. On the year, he has 309 receiving yards, third on the team, and is averaging 14.0 yards per reception, good for first among Stout pass catchers. Rosemeyer turned in a big day against River Falls as well, with 13 grabs for 73 yards, giving him 70+ yards in back-to-back games after catching two passes for 77 yards against Eau Claire. Rosemeyer has 34 receptions for 349 yards and has the Blue Devil's second longest play from scrimmage this year, a 43-yard reception in the season opener. Against La Crosse, Rosemeyer recorded 43 total yards, catching two passes for 12 yards while rushing for 31 yards on five carries. He was Stout's second leading rusher on the day, behind running back Tanner Kuehn. Snell had been relatively quiet in the passing attack up until Stout's matchup with Oshkosh, when he set a career high with 46 receiving yards on four catches. He has also performed his usual jack-of-all-trades role this season, helping out wherever the Blue Devils need him. Also emerging in the passing game is Chris Pica-Anderson (So, Eleva). Pica-Anderson caught at least five passes against La Crosse and Platteville, reeling in five for 18 yards against La Crosse before exploding with eight catches for 94 yards against Platteville, including a long of 22-yards...
Tight end Reggie Kujak (Jr, Blair) caught three touchdowns a year ago and represents a big target in the passing game. He currently has eight catches for 112 yards on the season. Against Whitewater, Kujak set a career-high with 47 yards receiving on two catches. His 14.0 yard per catch average is tied for tops on the team this year...
Running backs Tanner Kuehn (Sr, Fairchild) and Adolfo Pacheco (So, South Elgin, Ill.) lead the Blue Devil rushing attack. Against UW-La Crosse, five players recorded a carry for the Blue Devils, with Pacheco and Kuehn receiving 19 of the team's 35 carries. Peterson, Rosemeyer and Pica-Anderson received the rest, combining for 63 of Stout's 107 total rushing yards. Against Platteville, Kuehn and Peterson received the majority of the carries, combining to rush 26 times for 119 yards. In the Blue Devils win over River Falls, Kuehn carried a career-high 27 times out of the Blue Devil's 35 rushing attempts. Rosemeyer and Peterson were the only other two Stout players to receive carries....
Kuehn has been the Blue Devil's leading gainer on the ground for much of the season. He has set a career-high in rushing on three different occasions this year after going for 114 yards against River Falls, including two runs of 27 yards in the game. He also caught a pair of passes for 38 yards, the fourth straight game that he has had at least 30 yards receiving. Versus Platteville, Kuehn carried the ball 16 times for 91 yards, including a long of 23. He was also Stout's second leading receiver in that game, catching six passes for 44 yards, a career-high for him. Over the last four games, Kuehn has become a trusted target of Peterson's, catching 20 passes in that time after totaling only three receptions over Stout's first five games. He has had a reception in seven straight games going into the season finale. He was the Blue Devils leading rusher and second leading reciever again against Eau Claire, gaining 55 yards and a touchdown on the ground while also catching six balls for 42 yards.  Kuehn is currently eighth in the WIAC in rushing yards per game with 51.1. After a slow start to his senior season, Kuehn has come on strong and has closed out the year on a high note. The past four weeks, Kuehn has had at least 136 all-purpose yards in each game after going over 100 all-purpose yards just once in the first five games of the year. He set a season-high with 207 all-purpose yards against River Falls last week. In the first two games of the season, Kuehn rushed for just 13 yards. In the seven games since, he has gone for 447 yards, an average of 63.9 yards per game. On the year, Kuehn has 460 rushing yards, 176 receiving, 43 punt return and 423 kick return for a total of 1102 all-purpose yards. His 122.4 all-purpose yards per game is second in the WIAC. Pacheco, who has been dealing with injury issues as of late, leads Stout in rushing, with 370 yards and two touchdowns on the year. He is currently averaging 52.9 yards per game, good for seventh in the conference. He scored his second touchdown of the season against La Crosse, a one-yard run in the third quarter to tie the game at 7. Pacheco has been Stout's leading rusher in four out of seven games he has played in this season, rambling for a season-high 118 yards in Stout's victory over Loras....
Stout is averaging 281.2 yards of total offense, 103.6 rushing, 177.7 passing.
Senior linebacker Luke Bakkum (Oconomowoc) has been Stout's leader on the defensive side of the ball all year. He has recorded less than eight tackles just once and has led the team in tackling on five different occasions this year. After his monster game last week in which he recorded 18 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception, Bakkum leads the team and is second in the WIAC with 91 tackles, including 54 solo. His 54 solo stops are best in the conference. Bakkum is also first in the league in tackles for loss, with 17, and is tied for first in sacks with 8.5 on the year. He started off the season on a tear, recording at least one sack in each of Stout's first four games including multi-sack games agaisnt Dakota Wesleyan, Wartburg and Oshkosh. He now has four multi-sack games on the year.  The linebacker next to Bakkum is Kyle Hoefft (Jr, Morton, Ill.). Hoefft recorded a big game against La Crosse, in which he had a sack and a forced fumble. Hoefft is second on the team with 63 tackles, 35 solo. He also has 9.5 tackles for loss and two sacks after recording a half sack and two tackles for loss against Platteville. His 9.5 tackles for loss are tied for fifth in the conference. In Stout's matchup versus Oshkosh, Hoefft had 12 tackles, eight solo and two tackles for loss, which he followed up with a 10 tackle game against Whitewater. On the season, Hoefft has recorded double digit tackles twice and recorded less than five tackles just twice...
Free safety Tyler Naatz (Sr, Menomonie) is the leader in the secondary for the Blue Devils. Naatz, a team captain, is a two-time all-conference honorable mention pick. This year, Naatz is fourth on the team with 56 tackles, 31 solo. He is also tied for second on the team in pass breakups with five and has a fumble recovery on the year. Strong safety Collin Laursen (Jr, Mondovi) has bounced back in a big way after missing nearly all of last season with an inury. In 2012, he was a second team All-WIAC selection when he recorded 78 tackles, including 9.5 for loss. This year, Laursen has one interception and has defended three passes while also ranking third on the team with 59 tackles, 40 solo. Laursen recorded his first sack of the season against La Crosse. In the Whitewater game, Laursen recorded 13 tackles, including eight solo, to lead the team. He also had two tackles for loss in that contest. James Van Thiel (So, Hilbert) has taken over at the weak safety position. After not seeing much action over the first two games, Van Thiel has been a major factor as of late. He led the team in tackles against Eau Claire with 10, all solo, and had an interception in the game. On the ensuing return, he fumbled the ball into the end zone, leading to a recovery and touchdown for the Blue Devils. Against Oshkosh he recorded eight tackles, including seven solo. He recorded his first collegiate interception against La Crosse and now has two on the year, tied with cornerback, Grant Miller (So, Pleasonton, Cali.) for the team lead. Miller also picked off a pass against Eau Claire and is tied for second on the team with three passes defended. Fellow corners Mike Bond (Sr, Milwaukee) has defended five passes and LaRon Thompson (Jr, Modesto, Calif.) has defended six passes this season...
On the defensive front, senior defensive linemen Jamie Rohrig (Owatonna, Minn.), Alec Zoern (Germantown) and Josh Archibald (Cottage Grove, Wis.) provide punch at the point-of-attack. Joining them on the line is freshman Iyen Ogbomoh (Olympia Fields, Ill.), who has taken over for an injured Kevin Houts (Sr, Bloomington, Minn.). Rohrig has been on a tear over the last three games, recording at least one sack in each contest. With a total of four sacks in that time, he now has five total sacks on the year, second on the team and tied for fourth in the conference. Against Oshkosh, Rohrig had four tackles, two solo, and forced a fumble. Archibald also has forced a fumble this year. Ogbomoh and Zoern are tied for third on the team and with 3.5 sacks. Archibald also has a defensive touchdown on the year after falling on a fumble by James Van Thiel that rolled into the end zone against Eau Claire...Â
As a unit, the Blue Devil defense ranks third in the WIAC with 27 total sacks on the season. Nine players have recorded at least a half a sack for Stout and the team has recorded at least two sacks in every game except against Whitewater and Eau Claire. The defense recorded a season-high seven sacks against Dakota Wesleyan and added five against Platteville. The Blue Devils have forced six fumbles this season, recovering five...
The Blue Devils are giving up 375.4 total yards on defense, 123.1 on the ground, 252.3 through the air. They are second in the WIAC in rush yards allowed per game and second in third down conversion percentage, allowing their opponents to convert just 28.4 of their third down tries.Â
Kicker Taylor Pahl (Fr, Hortonville) has converted 5 of 10 field goal attempts and 12 of 14 extra point tries this year. Pahl has converted his last three field goal attempts and hasnt missed a kick since missing two field goals against La Crosse. Pahl hit a career-long against River Falls, connecting on a 42-yard field goal to seal Stout's victory late in the fourth quarter. Against Loras and Wartburg, freshman Clark Riedel (Waukesha) was called on to punt 11 times. Against Wartburg, Koerner also punted once for team total of 12, which tied a Blue Devil team record set during the 1939 football season against Gustavus Adolphus. Riedel is currently third in the conference in average yards per punt, with 38.9.Â
Â
WHO'S WHO: UW-Stevens Point: The Pointers, sitting at 3-3 in the WIAC, will look to close out the season on a high note after dropping two straight to Oshkosh and Whitewater. Stevens Point has been one of the top passing teams in the WIAC all season, ranking third in passing yards per game as well as third in points per game. The past two games, quarterback Cody Nuernberg has gotten the nod for the Pointers, throwing for 511 yards and two touchdowns during that time. Nuernberg, a junior, threw for 303 yards last week against Whitewater's stingy pass defense in only his second career start. On the receiving end of his passes will be receivers Matt Sosinsky, Jared Pankow and Logan Taylor. Sosinsky has been one of the top receivers in the WIAC this season, as he ranks second in receptions and first in receiving yards, grabbing 63 balls for 865 yards. He is averaging a stellar 96.1 yards per game and is currently tied for third in the conference with six receiving touchdowns. Pankow and Taylor are averaging near identical numbers, with 39.7 and 39.4 yards per game, respectively. His total of 530 yards is fourth in the conference and he has rushed for four touchdowns on the season. Behind him, Jake Menzel and Christian Almonte have also been steady contributors, as Menzel has gone for 250 yards and four touchdowns on 76 carries while Almonte has racked up 204 yards and three touchdowns on 37 carries. Almonte is also averaging a team-high 5.5 yards per carry and has a season-long run of 58 yards, best on the team. The Pointers kicking game has also been on point all year, as kicker Jesse Vervelde has converted 9-of-12 field goals and 24-of-27 extra points, good for 51 points, third in the WIAC.  On the defensive side of the ball, the Pointers are led by a strong secondary that has intercepted 17 passes this year. Four players have multiple interceptions, led by Deion Jones and his six picks, which is tied for first in the conference. Zach Vallafskey has added four interceptions of his own, while both Matt Gaffney and Mike Longmeyer each have two on the year. Vallafskey is also fourth in the conference in tackles with 75, including 42 solo. Linebackers Aaron Karlen, Jake Luedtke and Bo Seibel are all in the top-10 in the conference in sacks. MAX SPARGER: UW-Stout dedicated the Don & Nona Williams Stadium press box in honor of former UW-Stout athletic director and coach Max Sparger September 11, 2010. Sparger led the Blue Devil football team to the 1965 WSUC championship. After leaving Stout in 1972, Sparger served as the WSUC commissioner. Sparger is a member of the UW-Stout Hall of Fame, as well as the WIAC Hall of Fame.
STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season. |Â A 10-week series on Stout football is available.
TAILGATING RETURNED IN 2009: UW-Stout has adopted a formal tailgating policy for Blue Devil football games. The south end of the parking lot by the Don and Nona Williams Stadium has been designated as a tailgating area known as the "Tailgate Zone." Fans will be able to participate in the Blue Devil Walk. Tailgating is permitted three hours before the game, and tailgating activities will cease at game time. Only propane grills are permitted, no open flame grills. Alcohol or tobacco is not permitted.
EUROPEAN FLAVOR: UW-Stout coach Clayt Birmingham has been active in raising the popularity of American football in Europe and has made several trips to Europe to participate in workshops and coaching clinics. This fall, the Blue Devils had a coach from Germany into preseason camp for a couple of days. Enzo Rosani is a freshman cornerback from France on the 2014 roster. Feature Story The Blue Devils have consistently welcomed European coaches to their training camp. In 2011 it was Nico Teichert and Johannes Fiebig from Germany getting an up close look at American football. The Blue Devils also had Antti Kurenniemi, a native of Finland, on their roster last season. Kurenniemi saw action in several games. In 2012, the Blue Devils, for the first time in several years, did not host a European coach, but did have an international player, Jan Andre Millemann from Germany, who is the subject of this feature story.
DON & NONA WILLIAMS STADIUM: The Blue Devils' home stadium - Don & Nona Williams Stadium - got a facelift during the summer of 2008 when the original Astroturf-type surface was replaced with ProGrass, a surface that more closely resembles natural grass. Don & Nona Williams Stadium was only the second artificial playing surface in the state of Wisconsin when it opened in 2001. Only the Wisconsin Badgers played their games on artificial turf. The Green Bay Packers had an artificial surface in their practice facility. Now, nearly every WIAC school either has or is planning an artificial surface, and many high schools in the state have followed suit.
UP NEXT: The season is over.
