CLERMONT, Fla. (March 16, 2013) - After dropping a 6-3 decision to NCAA Division II Minot State, UW-Stout bounced back to win their second game of the day, a 5-2 win over Farmingdale State, Saturday in the Blue Devils' opening day of the National Training Center College Spring Games.
Against NCAA Division II Minot State (18-1), the Blue Devils started strong with back-to-back leadoff triples to opposite fields by
Erin Moss (Sr, Munster, Ind) and
Sam Hastings (Jr, Waukesha), with Hastings driving in Moss and Hastings coming in on
Hannah Sweet's (Jr, Elk River, Minn) single to center field to take a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers knotted the score with a pair of unearned runs - Stout would surrender five unearned runs – in the top of the third inning, then added two more runs in the fifth inning for a 4-2 lead.
Stout (4-2) threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning, loading the bases.
Alison Gray (Sr, St. Cloud, Minn) drew a walk to drive in a run, but Stout left the bases loaded. Minot tagged on two runs in the top of the seventh. The Blue Devils had a chance in the bottom of the seventh when Hastings hit a two-out double, but she was left stranded.
Both Moss and Hastings went 2-for-4 in the contest for Stout. The Beavers' pitcher Tiffany Friesen helped her own cause, driving in four runs on one hit, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly. Friesen struckout two, but gave way to Mandy Greenberg who struck out seven in the final three innings.
Tori Workman (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn) was tagged with the loss, striking out two and allowing four runs, none earned.
Laura Vanderhoof (Jr, Mankato, Minn) worked the final inning, allowing two runs, one earned.
Against Farmindale (3-5), Moss opened the game with a lead-off triple, then against scored on Hastings' single as Stout scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Sweet was hit by a pitch and
Taylor Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn) drove in Hastings and Sweet with a two-run double to give Stout a 3-0 lead.
Hastings drove in Moss in the fifth inning to give Stout a 4-0 lead. After Farmingdale scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, Hastings scored in the top of the seventh on a single by Sweet.
Vanderhoof scattered four hitsand struck out four to get the win.
Tori Workman worked the seventh, putting the Rams down in order, including the final out on a strikeout, to record the save.
Stout is scheduled to meet Benedictine University and Tufts University, Sunday, March 17.
