MENOMONIE (February 16, 2013) - UW-Stout shrugged off a sluggish performance in the final regular season game to hang on for a 49-47 win over UW-Oshkosh Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Blue Devils (19-6, 11-5 WIAC) head into the WIAC Tournament as the third seed and will host UW-Superior Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
Stout's biggest lead of the game over the last place Titans (7-18, 2-14 WIAC) was eight points a couple of times in the first half and Stout had to keep Oshkosh at bay throughout the entire game.
Oshkosh cut the lead to 23-20 at halftime, and the Titans, behind Cory Nickel, came at the Blue Devils in the second half. Nickel scored 16 of his game-high 24 ponts after the break.
While Stout never trailed during the game, Oshkosh tied the game three times late in the game, the first time at 6:58 on a 3-pointer by Nickel (39-39), again at 5:39 on a layup by Nickel (42-42), and for the third and final time by Nickel on a pair of free throws at 1:43 (47-47).
Stout took the lead for good on a layup by
Alex Oman (Jr, Lake Elmo, Minn) at 1:17. It would be the final points of the game.
Nickel was the only Titan to score more than 10 points as Oshkosh shot 32.1 percent (17-53) for the game. Dylan Wurtz had 10 rebounds to lead Oshkosh off the boards.
Chris Hortman (Sr, Milwaukee) led Stout with 13 points.
Erik Olson (Sr, Buffalo, Minn),
Jarvis Ragland (Jr, Milwaukee) and Oman all finished with nine points. Stout held a 41-32 advantage off the glass, 41-32, with
Aaron Jenny (Jr, New London, Minn) and Hortman each yanking down eight rebounds.
