MBB Preview: Stout welcomes first-place Pointers into Johnson Fieldhouse

GAME COVERAGE: Live Stats | Blue Devil Video

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (18-5, 10-4 WIAC) will close out their regular season at home this week with games against 15th-ranked UW-Stevens Point (19-4, 12-2 WIAC) and UW-Oshkosh. Stout will welcome the Pointers to Johnson Fieldhouse, Wednesday, Feb. 13, for a 7 p.m. game before hosting the Titans, Saturday, Feb. 16, at 4 p.m.

WIAC STANDINGS: Heading into Wednesday's game, Stout sits in third place in the WIAC. They are a full game behind second-place Whitewater and a game and a half ahead of fourth-place UW-Platteville. Stout is a full two games ahead of fifth-place La Crosse, meaning a Stout win or a La Crosse loss this week guarantees Stout at least a first round home playoff game.

EDDIE ANDRIST INTERVIEWS: Throughout the season, Jimmie Kaska of Sports Radio 1400 AM will speak with men's basketball head coach Eddie Andrist. Listed are each of the interviews throughout the season. This week's Interview  |  Listen to Interviews

THIS WEEK BY THE NUMBERS
.413 Stevens Point's three-point percentage in their 19 wins (147-of-356).
.270 Stevens Point's three-point percentage in their four losses (20-for-74), including their three worst single-game performances (.273, .231, .235)
.087 Stout's three-point percentage over their last two games (0-11 vs. La Crosse, 2-12 vs. Eau Claire).
44 Percent of Stout's total points scored by either Alex Oman or Chris Hortman.
THE BLUE DEVILS (18-5, 10-4 WIAC): Stout defeated UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, completing the season sweep of the Blugolds, and improving their record to 15-4 in their past 19 meetings with Eau Claire. Stout shot a healthy 49 percent from the field while holding Eau Claire to less than 32 percent. Stout was uncharacteristically beaten on the boards, getting out-rebounded by Eau Claire for the first time since 2008. The Blue Devils jumped out to an early lead and led the entire game, maintaining a double digit lead for most of the second half. The Blue Devils did not shoot the ball well from beyond the arc for the second straight game. Three days after shooting 0-for-11 against La Crosse, Stout made just two of their 12 attempts from downtown against the Blugolds. Meanwhile, however, Eau Claire jacked up 32 three pointers, of which they made only five, a 15.6 percent clip, even lower than Stout's 16.7 percent. Stout has attempted and made the least three-pointers in the conference and is shooting .320 from beyond the arc, ranking them ahead of only UW-Eau Claire (.307). On the other side of the ball, though, Stout defends the three better than any WIAC team, allowing their opponents to make just 29 percent of their attempts...Stout's success this season has been due to their dominance defensively and on the boards. All season long, the Blue Devils have ranked inside the top five in the nation in both scoring defense (55.1 ppg) and field goal percentage allowed (.368). Stout also boasts a conference-best rebounding margin of +7.7. Erik Olson has had an historic season from the point guard position. Earlier this year, he surpassed Jeremy Leibfried's all-time Stout assist record of 358, and continues to increase his new record at a rapid pace. Olson's assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.28 is one of the best in all of DIII, and his 6.22 assists per game lead the WIAC by a healthy margin...Chris Hortman had another good game against Eau Claire, scoring a game-high 21 points. Hortman has had at least a share of the team lead in scoring in 10 of the last 11 games and led them in rebounding in seven of those contests. Since January 1, Hortman is averaging 18 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, the highest on the team in either category over that stretch. His scoring average is up to 13.9 points per game, which is the second-highest on the team, and his 5.6 rebounds per game trail only Josh Kosloske, who leads the team with 5.7 per contest... Alex Oman still leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.9 points per game after scoring 18 at Eau Claire. Oman ranks third in the conference in scoring while Hortman ranks sixth. Together, Oman and Hortman combine to take 43 percent of Stout's field goal attempts, and collectively provide 44 percent of Stout's points...In addition to being the team's second leading rebounder, Kosloske is shooting a team-best .632 from the field...Jarvis Ragland, who pulled down a team-high eight boards at Eau Claire, ranks third in scoring with an average of 9.7 points per game, while Aaron Jenny is averaging 6.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. | 2012-13 Statistics

STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT:  UW-Stout made use of their numerous trips to the free throw line and went on to a 70-54 win to complete the season sweep over UW-Eau Claire Satuday at Zorn Arena. The Blue Devils made 26-of-35 free throws (74.3 percent), with Chris Hortman, who scored a game-high 21 points, making all six of his free throw attempts. Alex Oman scored 18 points and was 5-of-6 from the line and Erik Olson scored 12 points and was 8-of-11 from the free throw line. Stout never trailed in the contest, and built a 10 point, 11-1, lead over the first six minutes as Oman scored seven points in the run. Eau Claire would never get closer than five points at any time during the game, the last time coming at the 8:00 minute mark of the first half. Hortman hit a 3-pointer and a lay-up to take the lead back up to 10 points. Stout held a 32-22 halftime lead. Stout built on their lead throughout the second half, hitting 20-of-28 free throw shots. Stout shot 48.8 percent (21-of-43)  from the field for the game, while holding Eau Claire to 31.7 percent shooting (19-of-60). | Story and Stats

SCOUTING #15 UW-STEVENS POINT (19-4, 12-2 WIAC): UW-Stevens Point has been dominant for most of the season, with the exception being their last three games. The Pointers stormed out to an 18-2 record and won 11 straight conference wins to open the season before losing consecutive games at Platteville and La Crosse. Most recently, Stevens Point defeated Oshkosh, 62-52, a surprisingly low margin of victory in a game between a first and last place teams. Their sluggish streak aside, Stevens Point remains the WIAC's top team, and combines solid defense with one of the nation's most efficient offenses. The Pointers rank 23rd in the nation in field goal percentage, 31st in three point percentage, 21st in assist-to-turnover ratio, second in free throw percentage, and commit the sixth-fewest turnovers in all of DIII. Combine their well-oiled offense with a defense that allows just 60 points per game, and you get a tough opponent, who already dealt Stout a 19-point loss earlier this season. Three Pointers average over 11 points per game. Trevor Hass leads the way with 11.6 per game, while Clayton Heuer and Joe Ritchay each add 11.1 points per game. All three average at least four rebounds per game, and Heuer leads the team with 5.3 per game. Four Pointers have shot at least 56 three-pointers this season, all of whom make at least 35 percent of their attempts. Of those four, Austin Ryf shoots at the highest percentage, making over 41 percent of his attempts. Hass has been the main option from three, attempting 128 this season, of which he has made 51 (.398). Hass and Heuer each had 16 points against Stout earlier this year, both shooting at least 50 percent from the field in that game. | 2012-13 Statistics

UW-STEVENS POINT'S LAST TIME OUT:
UW-Stevens Point got back on the right track after consecutive losses by defeating UW-Oshkosh, 62-52, Wednesday night. The Pointers used an early 12-0 run to jump ahead of the Titans and held the lead for the rest of the game. The Titans cut the lead to three at multiple points during the first half, and trailed by five at the break. Point extended their lead to as much as 12 points, midway through the second half, but Oshkosh battled back to cut the lead to just three with 2:28 left on the clock. From there, Stevens Point went on a 9-2 run to seal the victory. Clayton Heuer had 14 points while Trevor Hass added 12. | Story and Stats

THE SERIES: UW-Stevens Point leads the series, 102-71. The teams split their two games last year, but Stevens Point has won five of the last six and 12 of the past 14, including the teams' meeting earlier this year.

EARLIER THIS SEASON (Jan. 9):  UW-Stout could never seem to quite get into the flow of the game as the Blue Devils were defeated 70-51 by 10th ranked UW-Stevens Point at Bennett Court. The Blue Devils shot 33 percent for the game and did not vary much from that number during either half. The first place Pointers shot 54 percent for the game and carried a 39-24 lead into halftime, a lead they held from the first bucket of the night. The Pointers jumped out to a 7-0 lead, then built the lead up to 11 points. Stout cut the lead to four on a jumper by Erik Olson, a three-pointer by Chris Hortman and a bucket by Alex Oman. Moments later, Oman got Stout to as close as three points midway through the period,  but that was as close as Stout would get the rest of the night. The Pointers got 16 points from Trevor Hass, 14 from Clayton Heuer and 10 from DeVon Jackson. The Blue Devils were led by Hortman with 15 - who also had a game-high nine rebounds - and 14 from Oman. | Story and Stats

THE COACHES:  UW-Stout:  Eddie Andrist (165-159 at Stout, 413-350 overall) is in his 13th year as the coach of the Blue Devils, and his 23rd overall in the collegiate ranks.  Andrist led the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Division III appearance five seasons ago when Stout advanced to the second round. Andrist coached at Mount Senario for 11 seasons and won three national championships. Andrist spent two stints coaching international basketball, working with the country of Qatar. | UW-Stevens Point: Bob Semling is in his eighth year as the head coach of the Pointers, and has had great success in his previous seven campaigns. Semling has led the Pointers to three WIAC titles in those seven seasons, and finished no lower than third in the other four. In 2009-10, Semling led his team to an NCAA Division III National Championship, after having been an assistant coach on the back-to-back national champion teams in 2003-04 and 2004-05.

CONFERENCES: Stout, Stevens Point and Oshkosh are both members of the nine-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Superior and UW-Whitewater.

UP NEXT: Stout has clinched a WIAC Tournament berth, but their first game's date, opponent, and location remain to be determined.
