THIS WEEK BY THE NUMBERS
86-49 Stout's combined rebounding margin in their past two games. (Stout 40, Ashford 20; Stout 46, Superior 29)
3.57 Erik Olson's current assist-to-turnover ratio, the best of such in all of DIII.
0 Number of free throws shot against Ashford University on Saturday.
36 Number of free throws shot against UW-Superior on Wednesday (30-of-36). Most made FT since 2010.
THE BLUE DEVILS (16-4, 8-3 WIAC): In their highest-scoring affair of the season, Stout used their offense, rather than their defense, to get a 92-78 win over Superior, completing the season sweep of the Yellowjackets. Erik Olson had another good night distributing the ball (8 assists), but had an even better night shooting it. Olson scored a game- and career-high 23 points, shooting 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Despite allowing a season-high 78 points to Superior, Stout's success this season has been due to their dominance defensively and on the boards. The Blue Devils rank inside the top five in the nation in both scoring defense (55 ppg) and field goal percentage allowed (.366). Stout also boasts a conference-best rebounding margin of +8.6, 12th best in all of DIII. Olson and Chris Hortman have been running the show lately, and Wednesday against Superior was no different. Olson's 23 points and eight assists led all players and Hortman chipped in 19 points, with 12 coming in the first half. Olson's assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.57 is the best in the conference and among the best in all of DIII. He has dished out at least seven assists in his past six games and now boasts a conference-best average of 6.6 per game, which ranks him inside the top five in all of DIII...Aside from Wednesday, Hortman has led the team in scoring in every other game in January, and led them in rebounds all but once. During this month, Hortman has recorded two double-doubles and is averaging 18.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, the highest on the team in either category over that stretch. His scoring average is up to 13.6 points per game, which is the second-highest on the team, and he has passed Josh Kosloske for the team lead in rebounding (6.1 rpg)... Alex Oman, who has perhaps been overshadowed by Hortman's hot streak, still leads the team in scoring, averaging 15 points per game after a 22-point performance on Wednesday. Oman ranks third in the conference in scoring while Hortman ranks fourth...In addition to being the team's second leading rebounder, Kosloske is shooting a team-best .617 from the field...Jarvis Ragland ranks third in scoring with an average of 10.4 points per game, while Aaron Jenny is averaging 6.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. | 2012-13 Statistics

A PLACE IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Erik Olson has been climbing the Stout leaderboard in assists all year, and the inevitable happened against Superior on Dec. 5, as Olson passed Jeremy Leibfried's record total of 358, making him the all-time career assists leader in the Stout record books. Olson broke the record with his third assist of the game, and currently has 444.

STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT:  Erik Olson recorded a career-high 23 points in addition to eight assists and six rebounds as Stout defeated UW-Superior, 92-78, Wednesday night at Johnson Fieldhouse. Olson shot 6-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. He also connected on all eight of his free throw attempts, six of which came in the game's final four minutes to help hold off the Yellowjackets. To begin the game, Stout went on a 13-0 run in the first five minutes, but the Yellowjackets battled back, and an 11-2 run midway through the period gave them their first lead of the game, a 25-24 margin. Stout answered right back, however, with a 13-2 run of their own, resulting in a 10-point lead they were able to take into halftime. The second half was a shootout, as both teams shot 45 percent from the field, and both shot at least 53 percent from three point land. Stout increased their 10-point halftime lead to 14 points, two mintues into the half, but Superior was able to whittle it down to six with eight minutes to play. Olson hit a three followed shortly by two free throws to put the lead back at 11, but again Superior shot their way back into the game. A jumper and a three-pointer by Peterson on back-to-back possessions cut their deficit to six, and Brendan Bauer hit a jumper to make it a four-point game with five minutes to play. That, however, would be as close as the 'Jackets would get. Stout used efficient possessions and free throws to seal the game. In the final three minutes, the Blue Devils shot 14-of-15 from the free throw line and missed just one shot from the field. | Story and Stats

SCOUTING UW-PLATTEVILLE (15-6, 8-4 WIAC): UW-Platteville will enter Johnson Fieldhouse riding a four-game win streak and are coming off their biggest win of the season. On Wednesday, the Pioneers dominated UW-Stevens Point for a 54-46 win, dealing the Pointers their first conference loss of the season. Chas Cross delivered his conference-best fourth double-double of the season as the Pioneers led from start to finish. Platteville and Stout are similarly-built teams, both dominant defensively and on the boards. Stout ranks first in the WIAC in scoring defense and rebound margin, but Platteville ranks second in both categories. Platteville boasts a conference-best scoring margin of +15.2 while the Blue Devils rank second (+11.8). UW-PLATTEVILLE'S LAST TIME OUT:
Platteville did Wednesday what no other team was able to do in 11 tries: beat Stevens Point in a conference game. The Pioneers led from start to finish to drop the Pointers to 11-1 in conference play. Chas Cross recorded 16 points and 11 rebounds and the Pioneers were able to build as much as a 15-point lead in the second half before they coasted to a 54-46 victory on Bo Ryan Court. | Story and Stats

THE SERIES: Platteville leads the series, 76-47. The Pioneers have won 10 of the past 13 and are 4-2 in the past six meetings.

EARLIER THIS SEASON (Dec. 8): Aaron Jenny and Alex Oman provided a one-two punch in the first half to give UW-Stout a lead they would not relinquish on their way to a 64-55 win at UW-Platteville Saturday. Both Jenny and Oman tallied 11 points in the first half, but they tag-teamed the effort. Jenny almost single-handedly erased a 10-point first half Platteville lead as he scored seven points with a pair of lay-ups and a three-pointer to pull Stout to within two points at 13:37. Jenny scored his 11 points of the first half in the first 12 minutes of the game, but most of them came in a nine minute outburst. When Jenny's run was over, Oman took over, scoring his first points of the game with around eight minutes left in the first half and went on to score his 11 first half points with a pair of three-pointers, a layup and three free throws. Oman would go on to continue his run throughout the game, finishing with a game-high 23 points, hitting 7-of-11 from the floor, 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and 5-of-8 from the line. Jenny would toss in only one more bucket in the second half, but finished shooting a very efficient 6-of-7 from the floor. The Blue Devils held a 27-25 halftime lead and only once let the Pioneers get as close as three points in the second half, holding as much as a 14 point lead when Oman banked in a three-pointer with three minutes left on the clock. | Story and Stats
