THE BLUE DEVILS (14-4, 7-3 WIAC): UW-Stout got back in the winning column against River Falls, Wednesday, continuing to solidify themselves as the conference's third-best team. They are now 0-3 against Stevens Point and Whitewater, combined, but a perfect 7-0 against their other six conference opponents. Stout's defense has been their strong point the entire year, but was not at its best against River Falls. The 75 points allowed to the Falcons were the most given up by Stout the entire season and they were out-rebounded by River Falls for the second time this year, only their third time being out-rebounded this season. They did, however, shoot over .500 from the field for the fifth time this season and have now made over half their shots in three of the last four games. Stout's defensive numbers remain very good, despite a below average effort at River Falls. The Blue Devils rank among the nation's best in scoring defense (54.9 ppg) and field goal percentage allowed (.363). Stout also boasts a conference-best rebounding margin of +7.3.
Erik Olson had another very efficient game as he continues to have an excellent season directing the offense. His eight assists and one turnover against River Falls improved his assist-to-turnover ratio to 3.77, which ranks him third in the nation in that category. Olson has dished out at least seven assists in his past four games and has one or zero turnovers in four of the past five. His average of 6.4 assists per game ranks him inside the top ten in all of DIII.
Alex Oman leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per game and is first on the team in steals, and second in blocks and assists.
Chris Hortman has led the team in scoring in all six games in January, and led them in rebounds all but once. During this month, Hortman has recorded two double-doubles and is averaging 17.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, the highest on the team in either category over that stretch. His scoring average is up to 12.7 points per game, which is the second-highest on the team, and he has caught up with
Josh Kosloske for the team lead in rebounding (5.9 rpg). In addition to being one of the team's leading rebounders, Kosloske is shooting a team-best .667 from the field, and turned in a 3-of-3 performance at River Falls.
Jarvis Ragland ranks third in scoring with an average of 10.7 points per game, while
Aaron Jenny is averaging 7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. |
2012-13 Statistics
A PLACE IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Erik Olson has been climbing the Stout leaderboard in assists all year, and the inevitable happened against Superior on Dec. 5, as Olson passed Jeremy Leibfried's record total of 358, making him the all-time career assists leader in the Stout record books. Olson broke the record with his third assist of the game, and currently has 369.
STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: Chris Hortman and
Alex Oman ombined for 41 points and UW-Stout needed every last one of their points as the Blue Devils held off UW-River Falls in the final minutes, 77-75, at Karges Center Wednesday. The Falcons led for the first 13 minutes of the game, but once Stout took the lead, 26-25, at 7:45 of the first half, they fell behind for only a brief period midway through the second half. With the score tied at 54, Hortman made the old-fashioned three-point play to give Stout a one point lead. But the last place Falcons would not go away, pulling to within one point before Stout jumped out to an eight point lead at 9:28. Hortman had three three-point plays (basket and a free throw) in a three minute time span to give Stout the lead. Stout kept the Falcons at a short arms length away, with a three, four, five, six or seven point lead until late in the game. Stout scored their final point of the game - an Oman free throw with 29 seconds left - to make it a 77-72 Stout lead. Arik Smith hit a layup with seven seconds remaining to pull the Falcons to within 77-74. The Blue Devils missed a pair of free throws and the Falcons Ben Gresmer pulled down the rebound. The Falcons drew a foul, but could only convert the front end. Hortman led all scorers with 22 points, while Oman finished with 19 points. |
