THE BLUE DEVILS (10-2, 3-1 WIAC): Stout displayed their worst defensive effort of the season on Saturday, resulting in a 74-67 loss to Loras College. The 74 points allowed were 10 more than their next highest, 64 points against Whitewater. Not surprisingly, those two games are their only two losses on the season. Aside from those games, Stout has held every opponent to 55 points or less, including their most recent opponent, Concordia University, who they stifled for a 62-42 win. Stout remained dominant on the boards, out-rebounding both opponents last weekend, and have a season rebounding margin of +7.9. Their defense is also holding their opponents to a combined .354 shooting clip from the field, which is the lowest rate in the conference.
Alex Oman leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.6 points per game, including a 22-point performance against Loras. He is tied for first on the team in steals, and second in blocks, rebounds, and assists. 6-8 center
Josh Kosloske has been an inside presence all year long. Kosloske kickstarted his season with a 16-point, 12-rebound performance in the opener, and has been mopping up down low ever since. He is averaging a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game, which ranks him second in the WIAC in that category. Additionally, he is shooting 71 percent from the field and leads the team with 14 blocks.
Jarvis Ragland is second on Stout's roster in scoring, offering 11.8 points per game and has led the team in two of their last three games. After a very hot start,
Chris Hortman cooled off in December, but maintains an average of 10.1 points per game. Despite playing less than 20 minutes per contest, Hortman has taken the second-most shots on the team and is suffering from a .339 shooting clip from the field.
Aaron Jenny is averaging 8.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game and is shooting a healthy .452 from the field.
Erik Olson is having a very productive season directing the offense from the point guard position. He had nine assists against River Falls compared to zero turnovers, his most assists ever in a game without a turnover. His 5.7 assists per game and assist to turnover ratio of 3.45 are both first in the conference. |
2012-13 Statistics
A PLACE IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Erik Olson has been climbing the Stout leaderboard in assists all year, and the inevitable happened against Superior on Dec. 5, as Olson passed Jeremy Leibfried's record total of 358, making him the all-time career assists leader in the Stout record books. Olson broke the record with his third assist of the game, and currently has 369.
STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: Stout came back from their Wisconsin Dells trip with a win and a loss in two non-conference games. Saturday, they fell to Loras College, allowing a season-high 74 points. They followed up the loss with a dominating, 62-42, victory over Concordia University. In their matchup with Loras, three players scored in double figures, but Stout could not seem to find momentum late in the game and dropped fell, 74-67 to the Duhawks. Loras held a three point, 40-37 halftime lead and Stout could not overcome the small deficit. Poor shooting in the second half played a huge role in the loss, as the Blue Devils shot 28 percent (9-32) in the second half and finished the game shooting 34.4 percent (21-61). In contrast, the Duhawks shot a steady 51 percent (25-49) from the field for the game and 50 percent (11-22) in the second half.
Alex Oman led all players with 22 points. |
Loras Game Story and Stats | The following night, UW-Stout clamped down on defense, especially in the first half, and went on to a 62-42 win over Concordia-Wisconsin. The Blue Devils, coming off only their second loss of the season, held Concordia to only 14 first half point enroute to a 29-14 halftime lead. Stout held Concordia scoreless on 13 first half possessions and limited the Falcons to only 17 percent shooting in the first half (5-29). The Blue Devil defense kept up the work in the second half, allowing only 30 percent (10-33) and 24 percent (15-62) for the game. A night after being limited to 34 percent shooting from the floor, Stout stepped up their shooting game in the second half against the Falcons, draining 57 percent (12-21) of their second half shots to finish the game by shooting 42 percent (21-49). Stout also controlled the boards, pulling down 45 rebounds compared to 33 for the Falcons. Stout did not give Concordia many second chances, grabbing 33 defensive boards.
Aaron Jenny and
Jarvis Ragland led the team with 11 points and
Josh Kosloske pulled down a team-high eight boards. |

SCOUTING UW-EAU CLAIRE (6-7, 0-4 WIAC): Eau Claire's season has featured a three game win streak and a four game losing streak, resulting in a near .500 record. The glaring flaw in their resume is their conference record, which is 0-4 to start the season, with all four losses coming in consecutive games. Most recently, Eau Claire lost, 61-47, to Gustavus Adolphus, who Stout beat earlier this season. Conversely, Stout recently lost to Loras College, who Eau Claire defeated handily back in November. Eau Claire is just 4-2 against common opponents of Stout, while Stout is 5-1. St. Scholastica is the only common victory...Three Blugolds boast double-digit scoring averages, led by Jordan Petersen, who is scoring 12.9 per game. Petersen also distributes the ball well, and leads the team in assists. Lewis Mau offers 12.5 per game and leads the team in steals, while Nick Craggs is scoring 11.7 per game along with a team-high rebounding average of 5.2 per contest. Dustin Kalien and Andy Kleist round out the starting lineup and pull down 4.2 and 5.0 rebounds per game, respectively. | 2012-13 Statistics
UW-EAU CLAIRE'S LAST TIME OUT: Like Stout, the Blugolds split a pair of games last weekend. They got a 69-62 win over St Olaf, followed a day later by a 61-47 loss to Gustavus Adolphus, both MIAC opponents. Lewis Mau led the team in scoring in both games, scoring 15 points against St. Olaf and 17 against the Gusties. Nick Craggs led the team in rebounds in both games, finishing with nine boards against St. Olaf, and 12 against Gustavus, which, paired with his 14 points, got him his first double-double of the season. | UW-Eau Claire 69, St. Olaf 62 | Gustavus Adolphus 61, UW-Eau Claire 47
THE SERIES: UW-Eau Claire owns the overall series, 121-89, but Stout holds the edge in recent years. The Blue Devils have won three of the last four and 13 of the last 17. They have also won eight of the past nine meetings at Johnson Fieldhouse, including the last four.
LAST TIME THEY MET (Feb. 11, 2012): UW-Stout came up with all the big plays they needed, defeating rival UW-Eau Claire, 67-66, in an overtime thriller at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils got clutch shots from multiple players, and denied two Blugold game-winning attempts, after hanging tight with the opposition the entire game.
Carter Ciolkosz hit the three that sent the game into overtime. Then in overtime, he hit a three to tie the game at 64, and hit a driving layup to knot the score at 66.
Alex Oman gave the Blue Devils the last point they needed when he hit a free throw with 13 seconds to play. Both teams had leads early, but it was a hard-fought first half that resulted in a halftime score of 31-31. Midway through the second half, Oman and
Erik Olson stole the show for a few minutes. Oman scored nine points in a row for Stout, and scored 11 of the team's 13 over a four minute stretch. During that run, which resulted in a game-high nine point Blue Devil lead, Olson dished out three assists and collected one rebound. The Blugolds chipped away at the lead, cutting it to just one point with under four minutes to play. Eau Claire took advantage of their early double bonus and hit five unanswered free throws to complete an 11-0 run that gave them a four point advantage, now with two and a half minutes to play. A minute later,
Jarvis Ragland hit one of two free throws after being fouled, to make it a one-possession game. After Jordan Petersen missed a pair of huge free throws, Stout got the ball back with a minute to play. Oman missed the jumper that would pull his team within one, but quickly redeemed himself by recording his fifth steal of the game, setting up another game-tying attempt. This time, Ciolkosz took the pass from Olson and buried it from three to put the season-high attendance on their feet. In what turned out to be their first game-winning attempt, Eau Claire got the ball in the paint, but failed to put it in the basket, and the game went to extra minutes. Down by two in overtime, Oman hit a jumper to tie the game at 61. Minutes later, Ciolkosz hit his third three of the game, marking the ninth tie of the ballgame. Oman hit the late free throw, setting up a win or lose situation for the Blugolds. Their first shot attempt of the possession came with four seconds on the clock, but was emphatically rejected into about the fifth row of the stands by Scholle-Malone. Following a timeout, Kalien got a wide open look from three, but delivered a rare miss as time expired. |
