THE BLUE DEVILS (6-0): The undefeated Blue Devils are off to their best start to a season in 11 years. Their six straight wins to open the season are the most since their 2000-01 season. The Blue Devils have won half of their games by at least 30 points, and their average margin of victory is more than 22 points.
Chris Hortman has been impressive thus far, as he is embracing the role of Stout's sixth man. He has two 20-point performances and another game with 19, and leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.8 points per game. His 5.8 boards per game are second best on the team and he is doing it all off the bench.
Josh Kosloske kickstarted his season with a 16-point, 12-rebound performance in the opener, and has been mopping up down low all season, averaging a team-high eight rebounds per game.
Alex Oman's scoring output is lower than it was last season, but he is still averaging a healthy 12.8 per game. Oman has also dished out 14 assists on the year, which is second best on the roster.
Jarvis Ragland, who provides the occasional slam dunk highlights, is adding 12.2 points per contest.
Aaron Jenny, who posted career highs in point and rebounds against Dubuque, has started all six games and averages 8.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
Erik Olson has directed the offense from the point guard position, dishing out just under six assists per game as he eyes Stout's all-time career assists record. |
2012-13 Statistics
GOING STREAKING: Dating back to last season, the Blue Devils are on a nine game win streak, their longest of such in six seasons. During their 2005-06 campaign, Stout strung together ten in a row. Furthermore, Stout has rattled off six wins to start the season. The last time they began a season with six wins was during the 2000-01 campaign.
CHASING THE RECORD BOOKS: Erik Olson has been climbing the Stout leaderboard in assists and recently passed Brian Ellingson to move into second place all time with 351. With eight more assists this year, Olson will become the all-time career assists leader in the Stout record books. Olson finished the 2011-12 season with 108 assists, averaging 5.4 per contest. So far this year, Olson is averaging 5.8 per game entering conference play.
STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: Wednesday night,
Chris Hortman scored 19 points off the bench as the Blue Devils defeated Luther College, 64-45, at Johnson Fieldhouse. Hortman led a crew of reserves who scored 32 points off the bench, including 10 by
Keith Rash. Meanwhile, Stout allowed Luther to score just 11 bench points, holding them to 34 percent from the field, 19 percent from beyond the arc. The Norse jumped out to an early lead but Stout got rid of that deficit quickly, going on a 9-0 run to take an 11-5 lead six minutes into the game. Their lead remained stagnant for much of the low-scoring first half, but five points by Hortman combined with a
Tim Butina layup quickly stretched that lead to 10. A three pointer by Rash at the buzzer gave Stout an 11-point lead, their largest of the half.
Aaron Jenny opened the second half with five points on back-to-back possessions to stretch the lead to 14, and Hortman hit a jumper to give the Blue Devils a 40-24 lead, which would turn out to be their largest lead until the waning second of the contest. Stout's lead never dipped below 12 the rest of the way and late in the game they employed the 'shoot and get offensive rebound' method to milk nearly two minutes off the clock without Luther touching the ball.
Alex Oman finished with 11 points, two blocks and two steals while big man
Josh Kosloske led all players with eight rebounds. |
Story and Stats
SCOUTING #3 UW-WHITEWATER (4-0): The Warhawks are coming off a national championship and have not lost since Feb. 26, 2012. They were 29-4 last year, but lose their top two scorers from that team, including offensive standout Chris Davis. Having that been said, few people expect that to hinder them too much this season, as they were ranked third preseason, and have started with four straight wins, including one over seventh-ranked Illinois Wesleyan. Four Warhawks are averaging over 10 points per game, led by
Quardell Young and
Darnell Harris, who are scoring 15.8 and 14.3 points, respectively. Whitewater is shooting 54 percent from the field and averaging 82 points per game. |
2012-13 Statistics
WHITEWATER'S LAST TIME OUT: On Tuesday, the Warhawks defeated seventh-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University, 71-65, in Bloomington, Illinois. 25 forced turnovers and 32 points by freshman Darnell Harris helped Whitewater overcome a 28-25 halftime deficit. Luke Knoble added 18 points and Quardell dished out seven assists in the non-conference battle of top 10 teams. The 25 turnovers created by Whitewater's defense were more than any opponent coughed up last year and were enough to offset the rebounding battle they lost, 34-21. |
Story and Stats
THE SERIES: UW-Whitewater leads the series, 69-43. Whitewater has won three of the last five and 12 of the last 14 games.
LAST TIME THEY MET: Both UW-Stout and UW-Whitewater had their lowest offensive output of the season in the teams' second meeting last year, resulting in a 56-41 Whitewater victory. Despite playing without the WIAC's leading scorer, Chris Davis, the Warhawks held a modest lead for much of the first half, and then broke the game open down the stretch, holding the Blue Devils to just 13 points in the second half. Whitewater jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes, but Stout battled back. A 15-6 run, fueled by seven points from
Jarvis Ragland and six from
Tim Butina, gave the Blue Devils a one-point advantage, their only lead of the game. The Warhawks rebounded with a 7-0 burst of their own, and finished the half with a quick four points, turning what had been a tight game into a seven point margin at the break. Whitewater put their foot in the ground midway through the second half. Already with a nine point lead, the Warhawks held Stout to three points in the remaining ten minutes of play. They did not exactly pour in buckets themselves, but the defensive effort was enough to give them a comfortable lead for the remainder.
Alex Oman scored 14 points to lead the Blue Devils, while Butina added 13 on 5-of-5 shooting before fouling out. Alex Edmunds scored 24 points for the Warhawks to lead all scorers. |
