MENOMONIE, Wis. (Novemeber 24, 2012) - UW-Stout jumped out to an insurmountable halftime lead, and coasted to an 81-42 victory over Northland College, Saturday evening in their first game of the Quality Inn & Suites Turkey Shootout hosted at Johnson Fieldhouse.
Northland's (0-3) locker room could not have been a pretty site at halftime, as they faced a 58-12 deficit after shooting 14 percent in the first half. Stout (4-0), on the other hand, was enjoying their largest halftime lead in over 15 years after shooting 64 percent from the field.
Jarvis Ragland (Jr, Milwaukee) was a huge contributor to the first half explosion, scoring six of Stout's first eight points, and had a game-high 13 points at the break. He got things going early when he posterized Northland's Dillon Riehle by throwing down a slam dunk while absorbing a foul from Riehle on the play.
Aaron Jenny (Jr, Spicer, Minn.) added a few buckets and before they knew it, the Blue Devils had a 16-0 lead.
There was really no let up in Stout's offense or defense. In the first half alone, Stout went on runs of 16-0, 12-0, and 15-0, and Northland never scored more than four points in a row. The Blue Devils forced 13 first-half turnovers, off of which they scored 17 points.
The second half was far less one-sided. In fact, the Lumberjacks won the period, 30-23. Northland upped their field goal percentage to 35 percent, including a three point percentage of 45.5. Stout's shooting accuracy dropped to 33, but they still finished the game above 50 percent.
Chris Hortman (Sr, Milwaukee) led all scorers with 20 points, his second 20-point game in Stout's last three. Ragland chipped in 18 on 6-of-9 shooting.
Tim Butina (Jr, Woodbury, Minn.) was a monster on the boards, grabbing a game high and career high 13 rebounds, six offensive.
In an unusually low scoring performance for
Alex Oman (Jr, Lake Elmo, Minn.), he led all players in assists, dishing out a career-high six.
Stout out-rebounded the Lumberjacks, 56-27, including 29-13 in the first half. The Blue Devils have now won seven straight dating back to last season.
The Blue Devils will face the University of Dubuque in the championship game of the Turkey Shootout. The game is the last of four games played at Johnson Fieldhouse tomorrow and is scheduled to start at approximately 5 p.m.
