MENOMONIE, Wis. (January 20, 2010) - UW-Stout converted crucial free throws late in the game to defeat conference opponent UW-Superior, 70-66, Wednesday night at Johnson Fieldhouse.
UW-Superior (9-7, 3-5 WIAC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead, primarily fueled by Jake Smith's seven points. Stout (8-8, 3-5 WIAC) answered quickly, however, with a 10-2 run of their own to take their first lead five minutes into the game.
The two teams contested each other tightly throughout the entire game, as the largest lead by either team was seven points. Stout took a three-point lead into halftime after a jumper by
Jordan Nelson (So, Maple Grove, Minn.) in the final seconds of the half.
Stout built up a seven point lead with eight minutes remaining in the second half, but it was promptly cut to two after two baskets by Smith, who led all players with 25 points.
Trailing by five with two and a half minutes to play, Superior scored four unanswered points. Goaltending was called on both baskets.
Jerrod Buchholtz (Jr, Durand) answered with two clutch free throws, followed by a game-clinching free throw by
Erik Olson (Fr, Buffalo, Minn.) with 11 seconds to go.
Eric Hostetter (Jr, Stillwater, Minn.) led Stout with 18 points, while Buchholtz finished with 15. Superior's Marcus Helland recorded a double-double as he scored 12 points along with a game-high 10 rebounds.
Stout has now won five of their last seven games. They will look to continue their hot streak, Saturday, Jan. 23, when they host last-place UW-River Falls at Johnson Fieldhouse.
