UW-Superior 67, UW-Stout 65
SUPERIOR (February 11, 2009) - UW-Stout's Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Jr, Anoka, Minn) scored a career-high 33 points, but it was his good look at a 3-pointer that bounced off the rim as time expired that would have given the Blue Devils the victory that hurt the most for UW Stout's leading scorer.
Matthews tied the game with 11 seconds remaining, only to have UW-Superior's Jake Smith hit a 15-foot jumper with four seconds left that set up Matthews game winning opportunity. When the horn sounded, the Yellowjackets escaped with a hard fought 67-65 win Wednesday.
Stout (7-15, 1-12) led for much of the second half, but Superior (11-12, 4-10) grabbed the lead with 1-minute, 26-seconds left in the contest and never trailed again.
Enerson-Matthews scored 16 points in the first half as Stout took a 31-29 halftime lead, and he added 17 points in the second. Enerson-Matthews collected a double-double with 11 rebounds.
With the effort, Enerson-Matthews also went over the 1000 career mark. He needed 22 points to top 1000 and had 23 points fiveminutes into the second half, scoring seven points in an 11-5 run that pushed Stout up by eight points.
Stout's Jordan Nelson (Fr, Maple Grove, Minn) also scored a career-best, chalking up 15 points, nine points better than his previous best.
Smith led the Yellowjackets with 23 points. Dan Culy added 18 and Dwight Hill chipped in 10.
Stout will host UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. and UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Feb. 18.
