Blue Devil comeback falls short in heartbreaking fashion

UW-Oshkosh 80, UW-Stout 78, 2ot

OSHKOSH  (January 31, 2009) - With the clock winding down in the second overtime and trailing by two points, UW-Stout's Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Jr, Anoka, Minn) launched a potential-game winning 3-pointer. The ball did everything - hit the rim, hit the backboard, roll around the rim - except fall through the net and the Blue Devils lost to UW-Oshkosh, 80-78, Saturday at Kolf Sports Center.

Stout (7-12, 1-9) trailed through most of regulation, and trailed by as much as 13 points in the second half, but took the lead for the first time in the game, 59-58, with 1:51 left on two Jerrod Buchholtz (So, Durand) free throws. Oshkosh (11-9, 5-6) took the lead back, but the Blue Devils grabbed it back only to see Oshkosh tie the game at 62-62 with 22 seconds left.

The Blue Devils never had the lead in the first overtime, but Enerson-Matthews hit 2-of-3 free throws with two seconds left to tie the game at 72-72.

Enerson-Matthews gave Stout their only lead of the final overtime period with the first bucket of the period. Oshkosh shot to a 78-74 lead, but a bucket by Enerson-Matthews and a shot from the baseline by Joshua Huettl (Jr, Eau Claire) tied the game with 40 seconds.

Two free throws by Luke Miller with 14 seconds left gave Oshkosh the lead, setting up the play to Enerson-Matthews.

Buchholtz led Stout with a career-high 24 points before fouling out. Enerson-Matthews finished with 22 points and Mahlon Thomas (So, Brooklyn Park, Minn) recorded his second consecutive double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Dane Seckar-Anderson had a monster game for the Titans, finishing with 35 points. DJ Marsh finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Matt Miller had 12 points.

Oshkosh shot 27-of-49 (55.1 percent) from the floor, while Stout shot 24-of-61 (39.3 percent). The Blue Devils connected on 7of-23 3-point shots with Oshkosh hitting 3-of-13 long range bombs. Both teams drained 23 free throw, with Stout getting 30 attempts to 27 for Oshkosh.
