PLATTEVILLE  (January 3, 2009) - Top-ranked UW-Platteville came out of the halftime locker room with a 15-4 run and went on to defeat UW-Stout, 71-57, Saturday at Bo Ryan Court.
While the Pioneers (12-1, 4-0) are currently ranked No. 1 in the D3hoops.com poll, but, in all likelihood, will slip out of the top spot after taking a tumble to St. Norbert earlier this week at the St. Norbert Tournament.
The Pioneers did not tumble against the Blue Devils (4-7, 0-4), which came into the game on a two game winning streak. Platteville held a 28-24 halftime lead, but moved that lead up to as much as 17 points seven minutes into the second half.
Stout cut the lead to eight, 47-39, on a 3-pointer by Jerrod Buchholtz (So, Durand) and layups by Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Jr, Anoka, Minn) and Mahlon Thomas (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn). The Pioneers pushed the lead back to 11 points. Enerson-Matthews hit another bucket cut the lead back into single digits for the final time of the afternoon.
The Pioneers' Mike Shaw led all scorers with 27 points, 16 in the second half. Shaw drained 11-of-12 free throw attempts. Jeff Skemp and Curt Hanson each scored 17 for the Pioneers.
Eric Hostetter (So, Stillwater, Minn) led Stout with 12 points and Enerson-Matthews finished with 11 points.
Stout came into the game as the WIAC's leading rebounding team, averaging 44.4 caroms per contest. But rebounds were few and far between for both teams - especially Stout - as the Pioneers shot 49 percent and Stout shot 52 percent from the floor. Stout was limited to 20 rebounds, while the Pioneers yanked down 27.
The game is the FSN-Wisconsin game of the week and will be broadcast Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. After broadcast on FSN, the game will be available on Charter On-Demand.
The Blue Devils were coming off perhaps their best back-to-back performances of the season after winning the 2008 Island Times Basketball Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Stout will have been idle since defeating the College of the Ozarks, 70-64, in double overtime on December 21.
Stout will host Ripon College, Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. in a non-conference contest, then will be at UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Jan. 10.
