MENOMONIE (January 17, 2009) - Trailing by one point, UW-Whitewater went on a 17-0 run midway through the first half to run past UW-Stout, 99-71, Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
Stout held a 16-15 lead when the Warhawks' Chris Vine hit a jumper, was fouled and drained the freebie to signal the start of the run. Miles McKay, who finished the afternoon with a game-high 22 points, had five points in the run. Matt Goodwin scored four points, Phil Negri hit a three and Kori Vernon added field goal to take a 32-16 lead with 7:16 left in the period.
The Blue Devils (5-10, 0-7) would get only as close as 11 points over the next few minutes before Whitewater (14-2, 6-1) took a 46-27 lead into the locker room.
The Warhawks had five players in double figures, led by McKay. Goodwin tallied 15, Vernon and Vines finished with 14 and Dustin Mitchell racked up 10 points.
Eric Hostetter (So, Stillwater, Minn) led Stout with 14. Jerrod Buchholtz (So, Durand) finished with 12 points and Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Jr, Anoka, Minn) had 11 points.
Stout, the leading rebounding team in the WIAC, were limited to 23 rebounds, while the Warhawks cleaned the glass for 36 rebounds.
Stout will host UW-Superior, Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m., then will start the second round of WIAC play by hosting UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m.
