COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (September 6, 2008) - UW-Stout defeated George Fox University twice to finish third at the Molten Volleyball Invitational hosted by Colorado College Saturday.
The Blue Devils (2-2) needed five sets to dispense with GFU (5-3) in the first game, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-10, then faced the same team minutes later in the third place game, winning in four sets, 25-22, 14-25, 25-19, 25-23.
Maggie Meixl (Sr, Mankato, Minn) was a force in the first game, both on the attack and on the defensive net. Meixl put down a team-high 16 kills and had four solo blocks and five block assists. Klare Kalepp (Fr, Abbotsford) had 14 kills, Steph Nichols (So, Greendale) finished with 12 kills and Jenna Swanson (Jr, Hayfield, Minn) 10 kills. Kim Labat (So, Marshall, Minn) had 53 assists.
George Fox's (5-3) Lyndsey Hover led all attackers with 20 kills.
In the second match, Meixl and Nichols led all attackers with 12 kills apiece. Meixl had two solo blocks. Sara Kjos (Fr, Hamburg, Minn) had four block assists to lead Stout (2-2). Labat had 40 assists.
The Blue Devils picked up their attack from the day before, hitting in the positive range both games. In their first day of the tournament, Stout either hit at a negative clip or a very low positive.
Meixl and Alicia Mizer (Jr, Barron) were named to the all-tournament team.
Stout will host St. Catherine's Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m., then will host the UW-Stout tournament, Friday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Sept. 13.
