MENOMONIE (November 30, 2008) - Jerrod Buchholtz (So, Durand) scored eight points in the final five minutes of the game to give UW-Stout a 68-63 come-from-behind win over Minnesota-Crookston in the championship game of the 2008 UW-Stout Super 8 Turkey Shootout Sunday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
Trailing 51-49 with 4:32 left in the game, Buchholtz hit a 3-pointer to pull Stout ahead for good.
Crookston (2-4) hit a free throw seconds later to tie the game at 52-52. Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Jr, Anoka, Minn) connected on a 3-pointer at 3:52, and John Donald (Sr, Milwaukee) followed that up with a bucket to give Stout (2-3) a 57-52 lead at 3:17. The Golden Eagles' Akeem Cubie tightened the score, 57-54, with a lay-up at 1:53.
Buchholtz gave Stout a six point lead with a 3-pointer with just over a minute left. Donald made two free throws for a 62-54 Stout lead and Stout's lead was never less than five points thereafter. Buchholtz wrapped up the game with a layup to finish the night with a career-high 23 points, hitting 6-of-10 three-pointers. He also had a game-high nine rebounds.
Stout held Crookston scoreless the first five minutes of the game, but the Golden Eagles came back to trail 33-25 at halftime. After holding Stout scoreless for the first four-plus minutes of the second half, the Golden Eagles took the lead at 12:38 on a 3-pointer by Bryce Cummings. The visitors held the lead and toyed with a two-to-five point lead until Buchholtz turned the tide with his pivotal 3-pointer.
Donald finished the game for Stout with 12 points, while Enerson-Matthews collected 11 points.
Cubie led Crookston with 14 points. Cummings and Delano Robinson each tossed in 12 points.
In the consolation game, Wartburg College put away Northland College, 86-60.
The Knights (3-1) quickly erased Northland's only lead of the game (2-0), jumping out to an 11-3 lead with less than three minutes off the clock. Northland (1-4) made a few mini-runs at Wartburg, but the Knights took a 19 point, 47-28, lead into the halftime locker room.
Wartburg had four players in double figures, with Travis Temple leading the way with 16 points. Cashes Mason had 15 points, Kelly McCarville 14 and Jarret Williams 10. Ryan Cannata led Northland with 16 points and Mike Swartz had 12.
The Knights held a huge advantage off the glass, collecting 35 rebounds to 18 for Northland.
Stout will open the WIAC season Saturday, Dec. 6 when they travel to UW-Eau Claire.

MENOMONIE (November 29, 2008) - UW-Stout connected on 8-of-14 3-pointers in the first half, took a 52-21 halftime lead and went on to a 96-43 win over Northland College in the UW-Stout 2008 Super 8 Turkey Shootout, Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Blue Devils (1-3) held Northland (1-3) scoreless for more than three minutes late in the first half as they went on a 15-0 run. Stout hit four 3-pointers in the run, including two by Jerrod Buchholtz (So, Durand). Buchholtz finished the night with 14 points.
Stout finished the night shooting 12-of-22 from beyond the arc. The Blue Devils shot 57 percent from the floor on the night, while holding Northland to 25 percent shooting.
Northland was led by Michael Mackey with nine points.
Stout's Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Jr, Anoka, Minn) led all scorers with 15 points, while Joshua Huettl (Jr, Eau Claire) added 11 as coach Eddie Andrist was able to empty his bench with plenty of time remaining.
The win was the biggest point differential since Stout defeated UW-Whitewater, 90-49, in the quarterfinals of the 2001 WIAC tournament.
In game one, UM-Crookston pushed their way past Wartburg College, 82-63.
Crookston (2-3) shot 63 percent from the floor in the first half to take a 40-31 halftime lead, then extended the lead by cooling off only slightly after the break. The Golden Eagles held Wartburg (2-1) to less than 40 percent shooting for the game. Crookston had a definite advantage at the free throw line, hitting 27-of-33 (82 percent), while Wartburg shot 12-of-15 (80 percent).
The Golden Eagles' Akeem Cubbie led all scorers with 18 points, getting 11 points in the final five minutes of the game. Delano Robinson finished with 15 points. Matt Pelzer and Bruce Felts each chipped in 12 points.
Ross Timmermans had 12 for Wartburg and Cashes Mason came off the bench to also add 12.
Stout will play Crookston in the championship game, Sunday, Nov. 30 at 4 p.m. Northland will play Wartburg College at noon in the consolation game.
