Box Score 2 MENOMONIE, Wis. — UW-Stout Women's Tennis opened the 2026-27 season in impressive fashion Saturday, earning a pair of victories in its season-opening doubleheader. The Blue Devils defeated Simpson College, 5-2, before closing the day with a dominant 7-0 victory over Crown College.
The season opener against Simpson provided an early test for the Blue Devils, who dropped the doubles point before responding with a strong performance in singles.Gretchen Murphy got Stout on the board with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles. Joelle Smith followed at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-2 win, while Aspen Johnson battled back for a tough 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4. Johnson's comeback was particularly impressive in her first match of the season. After falling behind 4-1 in the opening set, she settled in and stormed back to take the set before carrying that momentum into the second.
At No. 5, freshman Braenna Stampf made an immediate impact in her varsity debut, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Natalie Collins. Lindsay Leuzinger closed out the Stout victories at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-3 win. The day also marked a pair of firsts for Stout's freshmen. Maggie Hunter and Stampf each earned their first varsity victories as Blue Devils, helping contribute to the team's opening-day success.
Stout carried its momentum directly into the second match of the day against Crown College, putting together a complete performance from top to bottom.The Blue Devils claimed the doubles point before sweeping all six singles matches to earn the 7-0 victory.
Prajna Hosamane and Murphy each recorded dominant victories at the top of the lineup, with Hosamane winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 and Murphy posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2. Smith added a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3, while Stampf continued her outstanding debut with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4.Smith's second match of the day provided another example of the Blue Devils' resilience. After battling through a first-set deficit, she found another gear in the second set, closing out the match without dropping a game.Odessa Barreyro earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 5 to cap off a great start to the season.
The two victories give Stout a 2-0 start to the season and provide an early glimpse of the depth and competitive spirit of the 14-player roster. The Blue Devils will look to build on their strong opening day as they continue through the early portion of their schedule.
