GENEVA, Ohio (May 27, 2022) - Last season,
Kevin Ruechel captured the shot put national title on his final throw of the day. This year, Ruechel watched as he was edged into second place on the final throw of the day and the UW-Stout senior earned runner-up in the shot put to earn his second All-America medal of the weekend Friday at the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Ruechel moved his way into the top spot of the day on the fifth round with a toss of 57-feet, 8.25-inches (17.58m) and then fouled on his final throw of the morning with two throwers remaining. Bram Miller of Carnegie-Mellon also fouled on his final throw and would finish fourth, leaving only Carthage College's Joseph White remaining. White, the second seed to Ruechel's top seed, unleashed what would prove to be the event winner on the final throw of the day, taking the national title with a mark of 58-feet, 8.25-inches.
Ruechel, coming off his first All-America medal in the discus the day before with a third place medal, finishes his career with six All-America awards, including two national shot put titles, the outdoor championship in 2021 and the indoor championship in 2022. Ruechel was sixth in the shot put at the 2019 indoor meet and was named an All-American for the 2020 season when the meet was canceled at the last minute due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
