Men's track and field team finishes second at Ashton May Invite

LA CROSSE (April 9, 2022) - The UW-Stout men's track and field team finished second at the UW-La Crosse hosted Ashton May Invitational Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Stout got first place finishes from Jacob Backes in the pole vault and Kevin Ruechel in the shot put.

Backes won the pole with a height of 15-feet, 9-inches, just two inches short of his career best. Ruechel won the shot put with a mark of 58-3.75, a season-best mark, taking the event by just short of six feet. 

Spencer Schultz (3:53.63) was second in the 1500-meter and Matthew Ryan (3:56.35) was fifth. Marcus Peterson (15:59.01) was third in the 5000-meter.  Hayden Wagner (57.10) was second in the 110-hurdles and sixth in the 400-hurdles (15.40). The Stout team of Brent Heilman, Caleb Green, Brandon Dick and Owen Jelinek (3:23.35) was third in 400-relay. 

Daniel Nesja (45-7) was second in the triple jump, Jacob Bugella (197-10) was second in the hammer, Mason Barth was third in the javelin (168-11) and Nathan Skroch was fourth (168-5). Nate Karau (144-6) was fourth in the discus and Logan Garski (168-5) was sixth in the hammer. 

In the April 5 edition of the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index for the 2022 season posted on the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) website, the Blue Devil men were ranked 15th nationally and first in the North Region. The women's team was ranked 24th nationally and second in the North Region.
