Softball Preview: Schedule changes for weekend games

at St. Benedict: - postponed | at Bethany Lutheran: | Live Stats | game moved to Saturday, March 26, starting at 8 p.m.

WEEKEND GAMES RESCHEDULED: The Blue Devils (9-9, 0-0 WIAC) are still planning to kick off their northern outdoor schedule this weekend, but there have been several changes to the schedule due to the projected cold weather and winds for Saturday and Sunday. The games at the College of St. Benedict scheduled for Saturday, March 26 have been postponed to a date to be determined.

The Blue Devils were scheduled to play Bethany Lutheran College (9-8, 0-0 UMAC), Sunday, March 27, but that doubleheader has been moved to Saturday, March 26 and will be played at the MSU Dome on the campus of Minnesota State, Mankato. Game time moves to the evening with an 8 p.m. start time for the first game of the doubleheader, with the second game to follow.

UW-STOUT: Stout sits right at .500 with a 9-9 record. The Blue Devils have already exceeded last year's wins total of six. The Blue Devils have shown much more of a penchant for power. Already this season, Stout has hit more home runs this year (seven to five all of last year) triples (six to three) and is more than halfway in doubles (18 to 34 last year). Stout has plated nearly as many runs this year (76) compared to last year's total (89) and has already recorded 68 RBI compared to last year's 79. The Blue Devils are also stealing more bases, nabbing 33 compared to 27 last season. Korin Hall has one-third of Stout's stolen bases, taking 11 bases in 11 attempts this year. Hall's 11 stolen bases exceeds her total of nine stolen bases during her first three seasons. Pinch runner Hannah Timm has six stolen bases. Katelyn Belleau and Emma Muehlenbeck each have three stolen bases. Eleven players have pilfered at least one stolen base so far this year. 

LAST TIME OUT: The Blue Devils went 5-5 at the PFX Athletics College Spring Games in Clermont, Fla., March 13-18. Stout defeated North Park University, 2-1, but lost 8-0 to Coe College, Sunday, March 13; lost 8-6 to the College of Wooster and beat Plattsburg State, 9-4, Monday, March 14; defeated Lasell University, 6-5, and Macalester College, 7-1, Tuesday, March 15; lost to both Franklin and Marshall College, 3-2, and Springfield College, 7-0, Thursday, March 17 and defeated Western New England, 4-2, and lost to Millikin University, 12-1, Friday, March 18. Down the road: Stout is scheduled to open the WIAC scheduled when they travel to UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, April 9, and UW-Whitewater, Sunday, April 10. 

AT THE PLATE: Shortstop Shannon Jones and Emma Muehlenbeck have led the Blue Devils so far this season at the plate. Muehlenbeck is batting just over .300 with 13 hits (one triple) on 41 at-bats. Jones has recorded 14 hits (five doubles, one triple, one home run) on 45 at bats. Jones and Katelyn Belleau have each hit one homer so far this season. Lexy Kupczak has hit two and Kate Funk leads the Blue Devils with three home runs and 14 RBIs. | Statistics

IN THE CIRCLE: Madee Kleinschmidt, Mackensie Wolterstorff and Anna Blanford have been getting the majority of the starts, with Madalyn Lambert and Jordan Caby seeing time in the circle. Lambert has picked up one win and has 10 strikeouts in her 10.1 innings pitched. Caby has six strikeouts in her 4.0 innings pitched. Kleinschmidt (2-5) has been consistent from the plate, with an ERA of 4.13. Blanford (3-1) boasts a high ERA of 1.22 allowing only eight runs in nearly 28.2 innings pitched. Wolterstroff (3-3) leads the Blue Devils in strikeouts with 40 in 37.1 innings pitched.


WIAC PRESEASON POLL: UW-Stout was picked to finish eighth in the 2022 WIAC preseason poll by conference coaches and sports information directors. SCOUTING BETHANY LUTHERAN COLLEGE: Eden Ambrose and Katelyn Halbach are both batting over .400 for the Vikings with Kaija Mork not far behind with a batting average of .389. Mork leads the team in RBIs with 14 and has connected on six doubles and 2 triples so far this season. Ambrose has eight RBIs and has hits three doubles. The Vikings have relied on Kayla Senne for pitching. Senne (8-5) has pitched 69.1 innings and has allowed 69 hits while recording 80 strikeouts. LAST TIME THEY MET: UW-Stout closed out the Bethany Lutheran Kwik Trip Invitational with losses to a pair of schools from the Mankato, Minn., area, Feb. 27, at the MSU Dome. Stout lost a 7 a.m. call to host Bethany Lutheran College, 9-1, in five innings and a 9-6 slugfest to nearby Gustavus Adolphus College. | Game Story and Statistics

AWARDS AND HONORS: 2021: Ashley Jacobson was selected as The Heights/UW-Stout Athlete of the Week after helping the. Blue Devils to an 11-8 win over UW-Eau Claire, April 22...Korin Hall was named the WIAC position player of the week and Mackensie Wolterstorff the WIAC pitcher of the week after a season-opening sweep of UW-Superior, Feb. 27...2020: Korin Hall was named the WIAC position player of the week after the Blue Devils' only games of the 2020 season.


COACH CHRIS ILIOPOULOS: Blue Devil coach Chris Iliopoulos (9-9) is in his first year as the head coach of the Blue Devils with the 2022 season. Iliopoulos was the Blue Devils' assistant coach for four seasons before assuming the head role. 

NFCA RANKINGS: UW-Oshkosh is the only WIAC team currently ranked in the March 22 NFCA poll, holding down the 18th spot. Stout has played nationally ranked Millikin University and is scheduled to play 23rd ranked St. Benedict.  |  NFCA Top 25 poll

LAST SEASON: The Blue Devils finished the 2021 season at 6-26 and 0-14 in the WIAC, but took UW-Oshkosh into extra innings before bowing out 4-3 in 10 innings to the top seeded team in the conference in the first round of the WIAC playoffs. 

ON DECK: The Blue Devils are now scheduled to open the WIAC schedule when they travel to UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, April 9 and to UW-Whitewater, Sunday, April 10. But stay tuned for weather related schedule changes.
